Confusion About Veteran Rewards

I recently came back to CoH after more than four years, and it seems I've accumulated quite a few veteran rewards.

I can't figure out, though, if I can use them on all my characters or just on one. For example, I have a couple of respecs at 12 and 24 months (or so). Do all my characters have a free respec? Or if I choose it on one character, are all the other characters unable to use them?

The same thing with sprint powers, the Sands of Mu, etc. It's unclear from the descriptions how many characters I can use these rewards on.

any vet powers or vet respecs you get can be used by all of your toons. you have to select them on every toon.

All Veteran awards apply to all of your characters equally. Examples are in order.

For example if you have a Vet Award that grants a free respec each and every character can individually choose that particular respec for themselves. It's not like you only get one freespec token to allocate on only one of your characters. If you have one of the Vet Awards that grant a vet pet you can choose which vet pet each character will have. It's not like you only have one pet to share between all your characters. Same with the sprints and Sands of Mu and so on.

Hope that makes sense. Welcome back.

Thank you very much, and thank you for the welcome back. Things have definitely changed.

So, if I understand correctly, every single one of my characters, including ones I haven't made yet, gets two completely free respecs (9 and 21 months). Is that right?

Yep, that is correct.

Yep, each character has ALL the vet rewards available that you've received on your account. It can get to be a lengthy process for a long time vet creating a new character... there's a lot of rewards to claim.

Just a suggestion but I personally don't like claiming the sprint powers... there's a heck of a lot of them and they just clog up your power list. It's a real nuisance when you respec... you'll have all those extra sprint powers cluttering up your trays. I only did it on one character and I've regretted it at respec time. Unless you have some strange build idea it seems to me that one copy of Sprint is enough... the different animations aren't really worth it to me.

If you don't need to use those Vet respec, you can leave them unclaimed. No need to claim everything right away.

It's not really different animations, they're different EFFECTS. The animations are all the same but there are extra effects attached to the four copies of Sprint. I have a Stone/Fire tanker that I use one of those various sprints to simulate volcanic gasses escaping from her Brimstone armor when she runs.

And especially in the case of vet respecs, it's best to leave them unclaimed until you need them because IIRC, they do not stack with freespecs.

Incorrect, they do stack with freespecs. Only freespecs don't stack with freespecs. For example, here's 8 respecs. At the time it was 4 vet, 3 trial and 1 freespec.

There's really no reason not to claim them.

Respecs that count as freespecs (/respec) :

Dev-granted freespecs
respec recipes (cannot craft on a character a freespec)
bought respec (cannot purchase on a character with a freespec)

Got em confused:

Non-stacking 'Freespecs':
  1. They are given to players by the Developers as celebratory gifts (e.g., to celebrate a game anniversary) or as corrective gifts because game mechanics have changed and players might need to respecify their characters to adjust to the changes;
  2. Starting in Issue 11, inventing them from Respec Recipes; and,
  3. Starting in the Winter Event of 2009, inventing them from a Recipe from the Candy Keeper paid for with 500 Candy Canes and 250,000 inf. Thus, they can only be purchased during the Winter Event.

Stacking 'Earned' Respecs:
  1. Successfully complete a Respec Trial (the Terra Volta Trial for heroes, or the Thorn Tree Trial for villains) or the first Patron Arc for villains;
  2. Veteran Rewards; and,
  3. Purchased with Real Money

Thanks for the correction, now I know. I hardly ever use respecs.
