Holy crap at 1:25!!!

Article - http://www.raytheon.com/newsroom/tec...8_exoskeleton/

Raytheon’s second-generation exoskeleton (XOS 2), essentially a wearable robotics suit, was unveiled for the first time recently during an event at the company’s Salt Lake City research facility. XOS 2 is lighter, stronger and faster than its predecessor, yet it uses 50 percent less power, and its new design makes it more resistant to the environment.
The wearable robotics suit is being designed to help with the many logistics challenges faced by the military both in and out of theater. Repetitive heavy lifting can lead to injuries, orthopedic injuries in particular. The XOS 2 does the lifting for its operator, reducing both strain and exertion. It also does the work faster. One operator in an exoskeleton suit can do the work of two to three soldiers. Deploying exoskeletons would allow military personnel to be reassigned to more strategic tasks. The suit is built from a combination of structures, sensors, actuators and controllers, and it is powered by high pressure hydraulics.
Representatives from Paramount Home Entertainment, including the actor Clark Gregg (aka Agent Phil Coulson of the Marvel® Movie franchise) were in attendance to capture footage of XOS 2 to include in a video that’s being produced to support the release of Iron Man® 2 on DVD and Blu ray.

All they have to do is figure out how it can be used to better kill people or how it can be used as some kind of "sexbot" enhancement.
After either one of those things happen you'd soon after be able to buy one of these for $19.95 at Radio Shack.

Meh the real problem with things like this is the lack of a small high capacity battery or power source. Once we get those Mirco fusion battery's from Fallout energy guns and power armor are coming.

What about Solar Power? *shrugs*

The board breaking thing was not THAT amazing. The boards were all turned so they would break with the grain. I could probably push them hard enough and do the same. I know I know he hit it. Okay give the same guy a 5 pound hammer and the same could happen. Now turn those board so the grain is vertical and the bottom is held the same way, I'd be a bit more impressed. This has been the same trick down with people punching boards for years.

Show the machine being used in practical applications such as the ones they showed only in illustrations and I'd be more impressed. Show it ACTUALLY dead lifting 200lbs and not falling over. Balance is a key thing that I don't see with these exoskeletons. Can they get there? I think so, but to be honest what comes to mind is in Iron Man two when the "Hammer-Suit" goes haywaire and hurts the wearer. Yeah that could be problematic...

Oh well hope the company gets it figured out because it is a great idea, but I'm a pretty ordinary guy and I see a TON of problems to overcome.

Turns out various companies like Raytheon have been working toward these kinds of suits for decades now.
My guess is that if these things were "easy" we'd have them by now.

Clearly they have more work to do to before they are deemed to be "practical".
But even if it takes another 10 or 20 years for that at least all the work done on them up until now will have finally paid off.

Sorry I was a bit negative. I took my Donny Downer pills this morning apparently. That's what happens when you wake up late for work....

You have no idea about solar power do you. That's OK, not a lot of people really understand it either.

The amount of energy the Sun drops on one square meter of the Earth's surface in an entire bright sunny summer day is equivalent to the energy in a half a litter of gasoline. That's at 100% capture, mass produced solar cells are barely at a 20% conversion rate.

That's sort of why we are stuck on gasoline and other fossil fuels, the energy storage density is considerable.

It'd be cool if you could make these suits be solar powered. But yeah you'd probably need a series of collectors with the total area of like a football field to make a single suit do anything useful. That's why they were strongly stressing the power usage improvements of this latest XOS 2 suit because compact power supply is a key factor holding these suits back from being "ready for prime time" at the moment.

I remember reading a while ago about a similar exo-suit that was intended to allow a single (and usually small in stature) Asian nurse to be able to lift a patient many times their size.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

good luck D.B.B.

Exo-suits in hospitals will likely happen eventually. We'll probably first see ruggedized "robotic wheelchair-like" machines that'll be able to pick up injured people and independently transport them in combat/crisis situations. Clearly once those kinds of robots exist they'll be used in other related situations like in hospitals.
