IO Set Suggestions
Hello Jophiel,
I just finished leveling a SD/SS tank and I can help you with some bonus sets. You have 2 types of bonuses as +DEF goes :
- Half positionnal def = +1.88 to one position -> usually uncommon sets
- full positionnal def = +3.75 to one position -> usually rare sets
Personnaly, I aimed for 50% defense to all positions, and looked at this page :
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Invent...hancement_Sets
So choose which ones will help you reaching your cap.
Once you're capped, find some nice bonuses like +Recovery (Mace is endurance heavy...), +Regen, -Recharge.
some of the nicest sets :
- Melee = Touch of death
- PBAoe = Obliteration or Multi Strike
- Luck of the Gambler for defense
Hope it helped.
Hi folks. As I posted in an earlier thread, I have started a Shield/WM tank and am enjoying it more than I would have thought, having abandoned most tank attempts before lvl 10 due to low damage and sluggish soloing. Now, at level 35, I'm able to take some decent sized spawns and feeling like an actual tank. I'm pretty closely following Garthalus's "Block 'n Bash" SD/WM guide but am figuring out slotting as I go. At level 35, I have (from memory) 36.x % defense to melee and 33.x % defense to AOE/Ranged. My only set bonuses are a set of 4 Kinetic Combat (got lucky on merit rolls) for +1.875% Melee and the Steadfast +3% universal Def.
I'm not asking for a build so much as suggestions of which IO sets I should be looking out for if any to help give my Defense that final push. I don't usually slot for set bonuses on most characters unless it's +Recharge (prefering to frankenslot) so I'm having a little trouble balancing the value of the actual IOs vs their set bonuses. I can and will play with Mids but a little direction and input can't hurt. |
With proper power selection, tanker shield defense can reach 40 percent vs all with no sets at all. With I19 I'm positive you can hit 45+ without hurting yourself.
I'd build for +defense (combat jumping and manuevers, take physical perfection for a second perf shifter proc) and toss in a single +3 percent unique.
After that, EVERYTHING goes for +recharge, +regen, and damage.
If you really need more set bonuses than that, look at six gaussians.
Yes, it's really that simple.
Unless the softcap changes.... But then we're all lookin' at rebuilds.

That's improper because it'd be excessive of course.
Your goal should be EXACTLY 45% for Ranged, Melee, and AoE. Anything more will only come in handy against defense debuffs, enemies with inherent +ToHit(very very rare), and +6 enemies. If you picked up Phalanx Fighting and Grant Cover, you have enough defense debuff.
The Steadfast IO +3% is a great start.
Gaussian's in Build Up or Tactics would be good. That's +2.5%
Pick up Weave from Fighting and Combat Jumping from Leaping and your'e only 1.4% short.
Alternatively, instead of Gausians you could go a cheaper route...
Get Multistrike for Whirling Axe, Cleave, and Pendulum
In one of your Epic Pool ranged attacks, 6 slot Thunderstrike. If you don't want that Mako's bite in any of your ST melee attacks.
You have lots of options. The first is just the simplest.

"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."
My level locked SD/WM tank is pretty close to the softcap to all at level 31, consider this template if you plan to run mid range content often.

You've gotten a lot of good suggestions, but I just want to mention that although Kinetic Combat is a great set, it's much better for typed def than positional, and I think it would be wasted in a Shield tank. Six slots of Touch of Death gives 3.75% melee defense, compared to 1.88% for Kinetic Combat.
As you probably know, some of the KC pieces are extremely valuable, so IMO it would make more sense to either hold onto them and use them in a typed defense character, or sell them to fund the purchase of your other IOs.

Thanks to everyone else as well. I'm getting some good ideas from all of this.

Right. I guess I'm among the few that don't want another toggle running in /Shield.
|
EDIT: Ooops, looks like I was wrong about that; I haven't taken it yet on my Shield tank, and Mid's doesn't flag it as a toggle. City of Data says it's a toggle, though.

That's all done mostly with +endurance bonuses; between the bonuses, Atlas Medallion and Portal Jockey I have a total of 119.5 points of endurance. I did build for some recovery as well giving 182% recovery, or 3.62 eps.
I used the same basic design on my Shield/Fire tanker pulling in similar numbers. Again, endurance is a total non-issue on that tanker and really became a non-issue about the time I hit 30, from then on added powers and toggles were more than made up for with added bonuses.
<edit>
Well, then, Grant Cover shouldn't be a problem because it's a click. |

I was fiddling with Mids and entered in where I'm at right now. I'm actually fairly happy with it but if anyone sees a glaring issue, I'm interested in hearing it.
My character is a work in progress so I still have some SOs yet to be replaced, etc.

Set Bonus Totals:
your gonna wanna make weave sit in there as well.
what i tend to do is use my 2ndary for the bonus's to soft cap.
take a look at your 2ndary.
melee type powers can use mako for range def.touch of deaths are used for melee def
then look at any pbaoes.you can use sirrocco's for aoe def and obliteration for melee defense
as far as your primary thats where i would try to hit some recovery bonus's .
if not.energy mastery has conserve power and/or physical perfection that solves any of the end issues.
I'm slowly collecting some Makos, ToD's and the PBAoE sets but I'm not about to throw down all that cash at one time just yet so I've been getting them either as lucky "inexpensive" deals or as drops/rolls.
After re-re-specing and selling off the Kinetic Combats, I have a six slot of Mako's and am working on Touch of Death plus some more assorted frankenslotting and Weave. At lvl 39, I have 46% Ranged defense and 43% to Melee/AoE. Deflection & Battle Agility can both take another slot to top out their defense and that'll put me at/over the softcap for my positionals (45%, right?).
I've been running some missions at x6 or x8 and having a good time of it. Also been tanking in teams and feeling pretty damn superpowered. Have some nice screenshots of the Kronos Titan ineffectually shooting me in the face Thanks for the advice in this and the other thread -- tanking has been a lot more enjoyable than I expected.
