Just tested your build, bought the missins IO's and I have to say it works better than the previous one.
No Endurance issues even with big spawns, no perma-haste but it's really smooth and 3-stacks of Rage from time to time.
Now all I have to do is find a way to get my Alpha ability
Thx again and i'll check on the enzime -
@DeathHarvester : Thank you for your build, it's along the lines of what I wanted except maybe aid self/others, I don't really like it. I usually don't need heals while soloing or in small groups. And in TF's, I'd rather be puching things in the face or poping a green insp instead of using that power
@Finduilas : Thx for you're very thourough analysis of my build and help. I'll be trying it right away (looks promising).
Quick question about -DEF resistance : I see 27.3% on this build. Is it enough ? do I need more and if so, can I get more ?
Thanx again to both of you, really helpfull ^^ -

Hi everyone !
So I decided to play again a little after CoX went free and dusted off my favourite character, a SD/SS tanker.
I needed to redo the build a little, taking into account inherent physical pool, opening new powers for me.
So I moved some powers here and slots over there and I came up with this :
(please note that I already have all the IO's in this build)

If you want to help me, keep in mind a few things :
- my tanker is all natural looking, meaning no flames/laser beams and stuff
- I'd rather not use purple IO's or PvP or whatever. I already invested quite some time in those IO's so changing a few things if it improves it is ok
- If I had to say a budget, I'll go with 1 billion on top of what I already have (don't know if it's a lot nowadays, but it's what I have left on this toon)
My goal with this character is to be the best tank possible. I like the extra puch SS gives it, but I like tanking even more.
Last time I was around, I could effectively tank anything but the Statesman TF (I'm villain side). Everytime I tried, I was crushed without being full of purple or orange insps T_T Made me sad so anything that increase my tanking abilities, I'm all for it (increase resistance, defense, -DEF resistance etc...).
I haven't looked at the new content, incarnate and iTrials, but I wan't to be sure I'll be ready if needed.
If you have also some extra advice about which incarnate powers/slots/whatever to get, I'll be very gratefull.
Anyway, if you can give it a look, and help me build a better tank, it will make me very happy =)
Thx

Ok, here's a new build. I removed a set of Mako and Touche of death from Haymaker and jab, replaced it with crushing impact. Won 10% recharge, lost some melee and ranged defense.

Quote:That very well may be, hence my ask for advice ^^I might be wrong about this Ryltaar, but I think you actually have waaaay too much defense. I think you could probably get your positions to around 50% and call it good.
I would also try to get Air superiority in there rather than Hover to fill out your attack chain. You're gonna be sitting on your hands a lot without an extra attack from an epic pool otherwise. You can move the LotG from Hover into Grant Cover (as toggles go, Grant Cover is pretty cheap) and dig up slots from other places to make it a serviceable attack. A lot of your powers are way overslotted in the effort to get defense bonuses.
Actually, I'm good with my attack chain, I have Sands of Mu so no need for air superiority (I almost never use Boxing already...).
I think i'll drop the Touch of death set in Jab and grab Crushing impact for more +Recharge.
Same for Haymayker.
I'll be then around 51% melee/ranged, that should be good =)
I'll put a new build with this configuration. -
Quote:Thx for the tip, really helpfull ^^ I indeed slotted one LotG for nothing, here's my build below.Yes, if you click Window then Sets and Bonuses, in the panel on the right it shows all your bonuses and ones over the cap will be highlighted in red.
Just to clarify, as I said earlier, my character is natural (nothing like Pyre, electric etc), and she flies. Some might say it's one or more powers wasted, I like her this way and I don't see what I'm missing anyway (I'll add physical perfection with I19).
The only real things i'd like to improve, are my AoE defense and regen. I currently have 54% melee and ranged, only 48.6% AoE. But I don't see how without lowering melee (I'd like to keep it high), and I could live with less ranged (around 50%), but I don't know what to change.
My regeneration is fine too, I usually loose some health during the alpha but finish full health once the mobs are done. But more regen could help me even more so...
Anyway, this build is very enjoyable so I'm fine as it is. But if anyone can help me improving it a bit, I'll welcome it.

Quote:Thx for the link Krogoth, I didn't know about the Rule of Five actually... I was about to respec my tank anyway, so the extra useless LotG won't be wasted for long ^^Which functions as a set bonus, any after the 5th simply don't work, they are however a different set bonus than the 7.5% recharge speed bonus (Large Recharge Bonus). Paragon Wiki
And hasten is +70% recharge. Red Tomax, power quantification
I'll have to look at my build to check for other bonuses, especially recovery ones as I tried to squeeze them as much as possible to eliminate the endurance hog problem.
Is there a message in Mids saying "Rule of 5 check ! no good" or something ?
If that's all right with OP, I'll post my build in there to make sure it's sound =) -
I was talking about +Global Recharge LotG, you can put as much as you want. I put them in CJ, Grant cover, Phalanx Fighting, Deflection, Battle Agility and Weave.
The 6 give me +45% global recharge (fyi hasten = 75%), which I find enough : 35 seconds cd on Shield charge, 9 seconds on foot stomp (yummy).
@OP : I didn't take any epic pools. At first, I took Conserve Power + Physical Perfection, but after finishing my IO sets and Accolades, I respecced out of it and I don't miss them.
I was tempted to go after Pyre mastery for more AoE damage, but it goes against the concept of my character (natural, no fancy flames or electric powers or whatever).
I will probably take back Physical perfection when I19 hits though, just to be on the safe side.
Good luck with your tanker =)
Edit : I just saw your coment about being softcapped. As I said, I don't have Mids, so I couldn't see your defenses status. -
Hi there,
I'm at work, so no Mid's to check some numbers. But I have a lvl50 SD/SS tanker so maybe I have some input for you.
I have no use of hasten. It might be a personnal preference, but with 6 +recharge LotG scattered around my build, everything comes up pretty fast, double Rage fot 20 seconds, double Active defense, I don't need more than that. I've recently done an AE mish with speedboost+hyper metabolism, my attacks were quite fast and impressive, but crashes from rage were way too often... I'm sure I killed things faster, but I found it really annoying.
On the endurance side, I had to wait for the Miracle IO, the Numina regen/recovery, the +10% chance end from performance shifter AND both accolades (+5% max end x2) to not worry about my endurance anymore. So hasten on top of that might be difficult to run (at least solo), but I can't be sure without trying.
The 2 accolades add A LOT to your endurance. Since everything is calculated in %, the more endurance you have, the more you recover. My advise would be to get them ASAP (Born in Battle is quite easy to get, especially for a tanker). If possible, try to run the Talos Island mayhem mission for the temp power +5% END. It lasts 3 game days, very usefull.
Travel power is up to you. Of course combat jumping is usefull for the +DEF. Plus, it's really cheap on the endurance side.
On the slotting :
- Deflection needs 6 slots. 4 DEF (LotG works great) + 2 RES.
- Battle agility is overslotted. 4 LotG for any combination of Def/ is good
- Active Defense : I find 2 slots for recharge is good. It counters any -rech debuff and when you do some low level TF's, it's up 100% of the time.
- True grit has resistance in it so 3 slots of heal and 3 of resistance. (or 4 miracle for the bonus + 2 Res)
- Tough is overslotted, 3/4 slots is enough
- weave also, 4 slots of LotG
Now for the sets, you often made the peculiar choice of not taking the 6th enhancement in mosts sets. Why is that ?
Look at the 6 enhancement bonuses and you'll find the most interesting ones for a SD tanker : +DEF
- Oblits = +3.75% melee DEF
- Mako's = +3.75% ranged DEF
- Eradication = +3.13% AoE DEF
and so on and so forth...
So when you have, for one more enhancement, +DEF bonus, grab it.
Once you it the soft cap on all positions, then you can tweak for recharge, damage, regen, recovery, etc.
Hope I helped =)
P.S : use the "View Totals" option in Mids often to check your defenses and make sure you're above 45% to all positions after any change. -
Hello Jophiel,
I just finished leveling a SD/SS tank and I can help you with some bonus sets. You have 2 types of bonuses as +DEF goes :
- Half positionnal def = +1.88 to one position -> usually uncommon sets
- full positionnal def = +3.75 to one position -> usually rare sets
Personnaly, I aimed for 50% defense to all positions, and looked at this page :
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Invent...hancement_Sets
So choose which ones will help you reaching your cap.
Once you're capped, find some nice bonuses like +Recovery (Mace is endurance heavy...), +Regen, -Recharge.
some of the nicest sets :
- Melee = Touch of death
- PBAoe = Obliteration or Multi Strike
- Luck of the Gambler for defense
Hope it helped. -
Well the combo hover/fly is just a concept thing. I want to make a strong tank, but I want to create them according to the original idea of the character, this one is flying, so i'll end up taking fly anyway :s
For the recovery problems, I manage it the best I can. While in a group of 3 or more, I find it quite easy since I rely mostly on my AoE's, taunt, and some quick punches to keep aggro.
While soloing or in duo, it becomes quite difficult... I'm eating blues like candy.
Annyway, I'm gonna wait lvl50, start slotting here with +recovery enhancements and set bonuses and see how it goes. If it's still manageable, i'll keep it that way, if it's not confortable enough, i'll try a respec with PP to try it out. -
Maybe it's your character ? What's your AT and powersets ?
For instance, brutes's Fury have been lowered so it does less damage. And the praetorian new starting zone is definatly more difficult than hero/vilain zones, maybe they spiced the mobs a bit. -
For concept, i'd take kinetic melee. For efficiency (as i've heard), SS seems better.
Now, any powerset works well enough not to bother too much with efficiency only so stick to your concept would be my advice ^^ -
I don't know about the willpower part, but some things about SS are a bit odd :
- punch : not usefull since you have jab, grab haymaker instead
- handclap : useless, you want mobs as close to you as possible for the rise to the Challenge aura, throwing them around is counterproductive IMO
- Knockout blow : it's YOUR heaviest ST damage power. Grab it sooner and slot it
- Foot stomp not slotted and taken way too late. It's a shame really...
On the defense side, while not mandatory, grab tough and weave from fighting pool. It will help a lot for capping defense and increase your resistance.
And I'd get rid of all the "taunt" enhancements, gauntlet works fine, you don't need taunt duration on attacks.
For what i've read about willpower (though I may be wrong), the aggro aura is one of the weakests for tankers.
You can balance it with :
- fast attacks to make the best out of gauntlet
- fast aoe attacks to keep things on you
For the latter, foot stomp is your bread and butter : fast recharge, really nice damage, good mitigation, everything you want for good tanking. It's one of the best AoE's in game, so grab it at 38 and slot it.
You also want to slot all your attacks. Look at the bonuses from melee/PBAOE sets like Obliteration, it gives you defense for example.
The best way to build your defenses is to grab some nice attack sets.
Last thing : tanking doesn't only mean being in the middle of mobs spaming taunt. If that's how you want to play, roll a stone/ tanker.
Hope I helped. -
Quote:Actually, I tried OWtS and while I find it nice, it's really situational...ETA: One with the Shield, IMO, needs to be sooner and better slotted in your build. Taking it at 49 and only putting a Health Enhancement in it is like ordering a cup of coffee and just putting a few grounds and a tablespoon of luke-warm water in it. Sure, it's sort of what you really want from a cup of coffee, but it's not the thing you're expecting.
Right now, I'm softcapped to all positions and when I really need to pop it (big packs of +3/+4) the only real benefit is the +recovery as the +RES can be compensated with inspirations.
Therefore, I'm thinking of respecing it out...
Now, I'm currently 41 with my tanker, I love it, but I found out recently that you can't use foot Stomp while hovering... So I need to grab Combat Jumping which changes my build again..
The only problem I have right now is endurance managment. I eat a lot of blues, and I'd like to ask you guys, what is a good recovery rate ?
Right now I have a 247% recovery, my final build will be arround 3,50 end/s while using 1.07 end.sec.
I don't know if it's enough and I'm thinking about taking physical perfection...
Anyway, thanks for all your advices.
cheers,
Ryltaar -
The -kb is on the Zephyr Set, I'm putting it to reach the 3rd bonus (+1.875 def AoE, +0.9 Fire/cold def).
I have another question about sets and IO enhancements...
What is the difference between, let's say, a lvl25 Obliteration (+Dam) and a lvl50 Obliteration (+Dam) ? (except the price, obviously ^^).
If I slot any lvl of enhancements, as long as the sets are right, i'll have the same bonuses ?
Thx for your help,
Ryltaar -
So i've followed your advice and here it comes :

If that's not necessary, then maybe increase damage or use better sets ?
Any advice on how to achieve a more efficient build is welcome of course ^^
And just for my personnal knowledge, how much will it cost ?
Thx again,

Thx again for all this insight, really helpfull ^^
I've decided to stick with leveling a tank instead of brute actually, for many reasons that i've discovered while playing one :
1/ People love you.
Granted, most groups (if not all of them) don't need a tank. That's what's nice about CoX, you don't need a specific AT to do missions. But people in PUGs were quite happy to see me join because a tanker makes it so much easier. It might change as I lvl up (currently 22), but for now, it's really nice to feel apreciated ^^
2/ You have a specific role in a group.
I like versatility as much as the next player, but a tank becomes naturally the cornerstone of the group. Most of the time, when I join, people change the way they play : they stay behind me while I take point, they wait for me to gather everyone and then go nuts on AoE's and whatnot'. I really like the feeling of being truly helpfull to the group.
3/ You feel like a rare species
Everytime I log on, I check for groups and I only see 3, maybe 4 tanks only. Which means the chances you'll have 2 tanks in the same group are almost none. I like being the only AT in a group
On the SD/Mace topic, the more I played it, the less I liked it... It's nice and all, but it feels slow, it's endurance heavy, and redrawing my mace everytime I use Shield Charge or Active Defense is just annoying.
So I decided to go with one of the popular combos : SD/SS (plus I had a character concept I liked better). And I must say, I love it. It feels completly different : it's fast, dynamic, quite effective, and way easier on my blue bar.
I'm leveling quite fast with her, although I have no idea what build i'm gonna use when I hit 50. I've seen many people slotting wide ranges of IO sets in their builds, I'll have to look at some seriously...
Quick question on the "cost of builds" topic : how much does it roughly costs to have a nice build, full with IO sets, but let's say, no purple ones ?
How much with purples ?
Because from what i've read, it can start at a few 100 millions to more than 3 billions...
Do you guys have nice well-rounded builds I can look at ?
Anyway, thanx for your answers. -
Thanks for all the precisions (especially Neutrino). That was exactly what I was looking for.
I'll stay on my tank then and try something else with a brute =)
Thx again guys,

Ok, so there's probably something I didn't understand...
My previous statement about res/def caps are based on this :
http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Limits
max resistance to damage :
Tanker/brutes = 90%
Defense :
Tanker/brutes = +100.43% at level 1 / +225.05% at level 21+
Max Health regeneration :
Tanker/brutes = 2,100% at level 1 / 2,500% at level 20+
Max Hit-points :
Tank : 3534 / Brutes : 3212.7
Now, there's probably more to it than just numbers, that's actually why I'm asking :s
Thanks for your help -
Hi everyone,
I need somme advice about Shield Defense + War Mace Brutes and Tanks.
I started a SD/WM tank, lvl40 so far, and I like it (playstyle, survavibility etc...). But I was wondering something...
My main goal is to be the main tank in TF's and such. So I chosse tank. But when I see the numbers on both archetypes, I'm a bit confused :
- they have the same resistance cap
- same defence cap
- 300 max HP difference
- Same aggro cap (17 mobs)
Therefor, as Shield is a defense type powerset, you can basicaly achieve the same def/res caps as a brute and as a tank right ? But Brute have rage (that's really nice).
So I'm seriously considering rolling a WM/SD Brute, so my question is :
for these specific powersets, and the fact that I want to be main tank, should I play a Tank or a Brute ?
I have no "end-game" experience, so I'm asking those who have. If the tank efficiency in TF's is really better than a brute, i'll keep my tank. If not, the extra damage is always welcome.
Thanks for your help,
