Let Roleplayers "adopt" a Radio Mission Boss

Let players apply to "adopt" a radio boss. They submit to the COH staff their boss dialogue for the talking slots for initial encounter, 1/2 health, and defeat. Then people playing radio missions will start noticing a difference between the way the bosses act. If the dialogue is approved then the change would go ahead in future releases. The players would get a special "Living History" badge. Then radio missions would get an extra roleplay element where bosses act differently.

Example

Player ABC chooses Clemalion of the Circle of Thorns. He wants to make him Untrusting and slightly paranoid.

Initial Encounter: Here comes $target why was there no warning, were we betrayed?

1/2 Health: $target they know about you and they know about me. They watch our every move

Defeated: This was not your victory $target. They wanted me defeated.

This would be a fun little extra to make COH different from other games.

Sounds like a good bit of time that devs would have to spend on making and then maintaining the feature. Neat concept but I'd have to be slightly against it.

Why do missions in this game have replay value? If you fight different groups then you are dealing with different powers and different tactics. But what if you fight 99 missions of Outcasts? If one boss is Mocking then the next one can be Paranoid. Instead of giving boss 1 a red laser and boss 2 a blue laser make them talk differently to the players. Give them personalities. Longbow Boss 1 can be Supportive and Longbow Boss 2 can be Confident. You can even mix things up and have a cowardly Hero Boss and a grateful Arachnos Boss.

I have really enjoyed the extra personality displayed by the NPC villains and heroes in the tips missions.

Adding this for radio missions would be kind of nice. No additional tech required, and a good community building exercise to open it up to player suggestions.

Well, giving them varying dialog is fine. Not sure about leaving it up to roleplayers, or every boss text would be like:

Princess Azure Skylark Dragonqueen blinks her giant purple eyes at you. You can't help but be captivated by their perfect combination of innocence and mischief. She whispers sweetly in her musical voice "Please don't arrest me. It's not my fault, I was abandoned by my father Statesman and my mother Lady Grey at a young age where I was taken in and trained as a ninja assassin by Lord Recluse himself. But I was "abused" by the vile Doctor Aeon. Only then did I discover that I was truly one of the Fey, royal daughter of the Dragon-kin who sent me to earth to protect me from the evil Lord Shadowfiend. As heir to the lands of the Fey, Paragon City and the Rogue Isles, I have to keep my lineage a secret as I pretend to be a villain while fighting for the freedom of my true people."

And if left up to PVP'ers nobody would say anything, there would be no lore, everyone would just jump into a pit and kill each other.

If left up to hardcore PVE'ers things would give short epic phrases such as "Bring it". They would all be max level, surrounded by 40 boss minions that would chime in "Yeah, bring it!" shortly after. The battle would be glorious and thanks to leet skills the PVE'ers would prevail.

There, now that single-label stereotypes are out of the way.... kindly go **** yourself

I LOL'd.

But that's why the devs would have to approve every submission.

While, given the number of named bosses in CoH, it is a substantial bit of work I don't feel that it would be overwhelming. Especially with the community chipping in.

Actually they should capture the stuff spouted off by the PvPers in this game and use it for the Freakshow Tank Bosses. The combination of constant self promotion and despair when no one remembers them would go well with the Freak Show. There was someone last night on the server. "Anyone remember me. I was Blah Blah Blah. I was the bestest PvPer Evah. I offerered 50million to anyone who could defeat me at PvP. I sold my account but now I am back" followed by complete silence. The combination of self worship and despair from not getting attention would be really great for a Freakshow.

This particularly wouldn't fly. The badge collectors would riot.

As for the rest, I don't see the point in making newspaper missions more interesting. They're not meant to be - they're meant to be pure filler. If you're looking for roleplay, that's what tip missions are for.

I disagree there, Ian.
Radio missions already have some limited plot or frills beyond what's required by the game mechanics. First time I saw the P.L.O.T. device I laughed, and was more entertained than if it had just been "Recover the objective". Adding some personality NPC dialog is in the same vein.

With the way some people rewrite game history to fit their characters I don't think I want non developers writing anything that could be mistaken for canon.

I am reminded of a passage from the Bygone Bestiary, a supplement to the World of Darkness line of roleplaying games, adding information on a variety of natural and supernatural creatures. It even had rules for player characters as the greater beasts, with "roleplaying hints" for each species.

The roleplaying hints for the Cockatrice:

I dunno, I'd feel pretty motivated about beating them into the ground.
