Ok at first I thought he meant, making movies from the game engine as seperate stories and sell them. Now I'm beginning to see he means its basically the game without the game. So you sit through the pre-rendered cutscenes without any interaction.
Which is actually a far more retarded idea than I first thought.
From the article:

For everyone that has mentioned SW:ToR and animation of that quality, i can tell you they animate in 3Ds Max and their extensive showreel can be found here. Its pretty much a whos who of reputable work, Sw:ToR, Marvel Ultimate alliance, Fable intro cinematics, If you've been wow'd by it - its most probably Blur's work.
And no, I would not pay to watch a series of dislocated cutscenes strung together by loose narrative or crappy storyline poured into the jellymold of a film structure. But yes I would pay to see a good animated film. If it worked for Final Fantasy:The spirits within way back in 2001 it would work now.

Again, why is it retarded? Unpleasant, sure, but retarded? Nah. This guy's job is to make as much money for his company as possible. And this will make money as, frankly, there are plenty of people dumb enough to buy this crap. So it's a pretty clever idea.

Is a casual gamer really going to spend 30$ on in game cut scenes? Especially since majority of these people only game as just another of many hobbies and probably do know who Brad Pitt is going out with and go to movies with friends. Casual gamers play a game to play a game, they don't give 2 craps about 'The complete lore and history of Master Chef' as side reading, so I don't see them paying 3x a movie ticket just for the 'lore/story' of the game without the game so to speak.
Then you got the hardcore/semi hardcore gamer who keeps up with industry news(and DO care about Starcraft/Warcraft lore), who IMO would not touch this just to spite Kodick. More importantly, LIKE to play games on a frequent basis (probably even competitively). And are probably decently versed in the internet and either would rather watch a lets play or get the Activition movie through some other means without paying them.
tl;dr He has no audience. The only people who would want something like this, is someone who cares about the Starcraft series enough to want the lore (semi hardcore/hardcore gamer imo), but don't want to or have the time to play the game. Basically no one.
Plus it's Blizzard. They'll likely include some kind of bonus item for their "other" game, thus ensuring massive sales.
An MMO closure is definitely not a joke, and I have no intention of making light of it. And it can be a tough and emotional thing for players to go through, speaking from personal experience. And I know that it's often much harder on the developers than on the publisher. However, I also know that it doesn't necessarily turn you into a sad, depressed sack of tears for the rest of your life. People can move past it, and heal.
Like the title says
Not sure what exactly he means. If he means just the stuff from the game minus the game, I think he may have officially lost his frelling mind. |
Or everyone could just keep getting them for free, if they're so inclined.
And when you say not much money in it, I'll have to disagree. You need someone to animate, for one. OK what about the story, you need someone to write as well. How about the voice actors? You need those too. Marketing, distribution sites, they all add up. If they do try it, I'd say they let out one episode, see how much money they didn't make and never make another one again.
And for a online only distribution is just asking for people frapsing, p2p sharing it, hosting it on rutube etc, the moment it hits.
