If you're from Fort Gay, West Virginia...

"...(Microsoft said) the city's name doesn't matter, the word "gay" is inappropriate content in any context."

Wow. Just...wow. At least M$ did reverse the ban on the guy's account. And I can sort-of understand M$'s action, as the word gay is frequently used in a pejorative manner. I'd just like to see a little bit of common sense used, and maybe a bit of human intervention before such bannings. Because computers can flag "inappropriate" words, but they are lousy at context.

They're going with "it's easier to be too harsh and back off than be too light and have to tighten up" philosophy.

I don't blame Microsoft. I blame the customers that force them to make these kind of decisions.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

I blame the society that ruined a word that meant happy and turned into an insult. The same society that abhors sex yet promotes torture porn.

I agree with BlackArachnia.

I used to know a woman named Gay, having been born well before the word became a pejorative. I wonder what she's supposed to do in situations like this.

Indeed... he's gay used to mean he's happy but apparently happy isn't allowed these days...

The implied "dirtiness" isn't in the word but rather in the minds who decide it has to be "dirty". And then watch pr0n when everyone else isn't looking and are capable of things far, far worse than a moniker used to describe a perfectly valid sexual orientation.

This is literally a Don't Ask Don't Tell policy, and it's actually over something more stupid than sexuality.

LoL I just had to look up the actor who played Nightcrawler so I could see what you were talking about. Btw, to the poster who mentioned he once knew a woman named Gay, that was my mother's aunt's name. I met her as a teen and used to giggle about it behind her back.

That said, I can understand why the guy's account was flagged. Like one of the previous posters mentioned, it's one of those words that get flagged by software. The fact that MS gave him back his account after they realized the mistake should be the end of it.
