Agreed.

Father_Xmas,
You pretty much said what I was thinking... but I tried to be nice about it and hoped that people wouldn't ask what i mean by being dishonest and also not post what I was thinking.

It's even somewhat more natural to swerve the way he did than it is to swerve another way. The best possible thing he could have done is braked and reversed or continued on faster if the crash happened too fast for the first both of which would have had higher chances of survival for all in his car.

So we are left with 3 conclusion...
He knew what to do and froze
He didn't know what to do and did whats natural
He knew what to do and didn't do it purposefully

So >.> I'd rather just say hey sucks that people died.

/salute Mr. Woods.

I condsider myself a pessamist and have a rather low view of humanity, but seriously....let people take comfort in whatever way they can. Why do we have to sit here and "logically" debate whether the act was truely heroic or not? It eases the pain a bit for Mr. Woods' wife, and family, and that's what matters.

Cops, firefighters, paramedics, and soldiers aren't heroes either, right? They're just doing those jobs to get paid, get a "free ride" through college, or personal glory. Nah, it has nothing to do with saving lives, improving life in their community or defending their country.

Give me a break....

Whether he did or didn't do it on purpose I'm not going debate since I didn't see it, or know the lay out of the accident. Plus I'm not big on speaking ill of the dead. It's a lousy thing to have happened regardless of how they reached the outcome they did. She can take solace in the fact her husband died protecting her and I'm not about to shake that tree. You don't get alot of time to react and I'm sure he'd wanted this outcome over his wife and child dying in his place.(I know I would if I were in his place.) In that memory we live on, as life continues for those to honor him.

The problem with what you are saying is that is two-fold.

When you use words like hero with so many people it minimizes it's meaning and dishonors people who are actually heroes.

As to your point about cops, firefighters, paramedics, and soldiers being heroes or not... No they are not, by default, heroes. To me a hero is someone selflessly sacrificing one's self for the betterment of others intelligently. Ie. suicide missions do not make you a hero (if there is no possibility of your own survival you are just a noble idiot). Saving yourself or your family does not make you a hero (because that is instinct, and is actually not selfless). Doing your job does not make you a hero. Those jobs you mentioned place a value on their life and are willing to do those jobs for those prices and benefits that those jobs offer.

Claiming someone who did what most of us would have done naturally as that is your natural reaction, to swerve when someone drives at you, is a hero is disrespectful to people who are or were heroes and did do heroic things.

That is not to say that the guy isn't worth remembering in a good light or speaking about in a good light. It is to say, do not dishonestly praise someone for something they are not. And to say this is speaking disrespectfully of the dead. That is simply false. It is a slight against those who would dishonor the person by trying to make him better than he was which implies he wasn't a good guy to begin with.

This is what's called "being a killjoy".

People sometimes do it because it gives them a sense of smug intellectual superiority.

People who do it often generally don't realize they're doing it, nor why others get annoyed, irritated, or upset about it.

I tend to attribute it to a deficiency of tact and empathy.
