NYCC, simultaneously a collection of pure awesome and a wretched hive of scum, villainy, and overpriced vendors. stand around in awe as folks you paid to see don't show up at all, but folks who were never on the schedule show up to make the whole damn thing worth the hours and hours and hours you're going to spend standing in line.

damn the lazy, next time i go to a con im renting scooters, and spot welding a cow catcher to the front of them.

Got Stan Lee's autograph on Incredible Hulk #600 at the Pittsburgh Comicon. Had to pay around $30, but it's worth it.

Dude was a little late coming back from lunch, but for a 70ish year old man to do about 400 signatures in like 45 minutes, dayumn.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

good luck D.B.B.

I'll be there

Although being at SDCC for the first time this year made me realize that NYCC will probably never be as big or cool, simply because while SD is a small city that completely transforms for the con, which generates this cool atmosphere of craziness, NYC simply absorbs all its mass with a shrug. Plus, the Javits center is on the extreme west side of Manhattan, where fun goes to die, while the SD Convention Center is right in downtown SD.

But regardless, NYCC is a great time and I'll enjoy the hell out of it.

NYC really needs to do something about the surrounding area around the Javits Center. It's still too dilapidated-industrial looking. Especially while you're treking to it across the very long between-avenue blocks (they're like 2.5 regular blocks in length). I seldom get motivated enough to want to go to an event there.

They just need to build another convention center closer to the village. I don't think midtown west is getting gentrified any time soon. Even just building one a few dozen blocks south on the west side would be vastly better - must closer to Chelsea/West Village.

Of course, there's no space anywhere, so that's tricky.

How is that I play this game, and not one person on this list I want to see? Except maybe Stan Lee and Bruce Campbell, whom I adore and acknowledge the cult following of respectively, nobody screams "Dude, this is your one chance!"

*shrugs*

I guess I'm in love with the content of the genre and not the minds behind them. Never thought of it like that before.

Well done.
I have a 50 in every AT, but Scrappers and Dominators are my favorites.

How safe is this area? I'm coming in by train to Penn Station, and it doesn't look like too bad a walk distance-wise, but would I be passing through any bad neighborhoods?

Pretty much all of Manhattan is safe these days. The walk from Penn Station to the Javits Center is super boring, but not particularly dangerous. I actually work right around there. You'll pass a lot of office buildings and crappy restaurants, and then when you cross 9th ave you'll pass a lot of warehouses and maybe a horse stable, but you don't have anything to worry about. To squeeze the maximum amount of interest out of the walk, you might as well walk down 34th street. Not that it helps all that much - that area is just a drag in general. Obviously common sense applies when talking about safety.

Yeah, it's safe, just looks dismal. With a big convention, there will be lots of people walking along with you. And, of course, there will be people who won't want to buy the expensive food there, so they'll be hiking back to "civilization" to eat and such. It's also near one of the entrances to the Lincoln Tunnel, so there's a lot of traffic.

FYI, if you're looking for good food near Javits, there are a few good restaurants at 9th ave and 36th street. A couple Thai places and a Burgers and Cupcakes. Those are, to my knowledge, the only good restaurants within several blocks of that area.

This will be the third NYCC that I attend. Staying at the New Yorker, so not too far of a walk.

Walking to and from the con is not too bad, and remember that there will be hundreds of folks from the con walking with you (at reasonable hours).

Anyone interested in an unofficial meet-n-greet on the night that the official meet-n-greet is not happening? I assume the official one will be on Saturday, but it is purely a guess....
