Ghostbusters 3 to Feature Big Plans for Baby Oscar?

There have been some news on Columbia Pictures’ Ghostbusters 3 this past year or so. A script has been written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Ivan Reitman is returning to direct. The four original Ghostbusters will be coming back (Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson). Bill Murray only agreed to come back if he’s in the movie as a ghost. The screenwriters agreed. Also, the new movie will be a passing-the-torch film, where the previous cast will mentor and train a new generation of ghostbusters.

The latest news comes our way from a report from BloodyDisgusting. It seems early word is that it will be revealed up front that Oscar, the baby of Sigourney Weaver’s character Dana Barrett from Ghostbusters 2, is actually Dr. Peter Venkman’s son. In the new film, he’ll be around 21-years old-ish and ready to take on his father’s business as one of the new ghostbusters. The age sounds about right, since Ghostbusters 2 was released in 1989.

The other bit of news from the report is that Rick Moranis will be coming out of retirement for this film. He played Louis Tully, Dana Barrett’s neighbor in the original film and eventually became the Ghostbusters' accountant and tax attorney in the second film. Sigourney Weaver is also expected to return.

There’s no confirmation yet of when the movie will go into production. But there have been talks with Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd earlier this year on when the movie is planned for release. There’s been some confusion on this, according to a report from SlashFilm months ago. On April 2010, Ramis mentions a 2012 release to ABC7, while Aykroyd mentions that filming may begin this fall with a possible 2011 release.
Here's the link to my article, which also has links to the referenced articles.

I'm not too surprised that they're going this route. I guess it didn't occur to me before that they could use Oscar, which does kind of makes sense. But I have heard that it was unofficially mentioned before by GB fans that Oscar was the son of the violinist from GB1, and not Peter Venkman's. But then again, since it was never mentioned in any of the films who Oscar's real father is as canon, this tiny bit of retconning works for me. Looking forward to hear more about Ghostbusters 3.

Peter Venkman's dead?? Ah man...

While I can see it be cool to have him come around and be able to talk about what it's like being an actual ghost it just kinda... doesn't sit right.
I mean, he's the heart of the movies for me. It was his con man ways that got them to actually attempt busting in the 1st place.

Ah well, a Venkman ghost is still better than no Venkman at all and with Bill Murray being the way he is these days guess I should just be happy.

Also, when did Rick Moranis retire?

He pulled out of making films at around 96 or 97, after a few years when his wife died of liver cancer in 91. He wanted to focus on raising his kids I believe.

As for Bill Murray, we may still see Peter Venkman alive, at least at the start of the film. You can see an article and video of him talking about it back in March with David Letterman, where he mentions being killed during the first reel of the planned GB3. Here's a link to it. At the time he seemed, well... not fully invested into coming onboard.

Now if they get what's his name from Zombieland to play Oscar then the circle is complete.

It's cool that the original cast will be returning but...and I rarely ever say this sort of thing at this stage of a film's develpment, but I'm really thinking this is going to be a bad idea. Ramis and Ackroyd haven't been funny in...well, pretty much since the last Ghostbusters. And Bill Murray...I think he only agreed even to appear as a ghost because they threw enough money at him. He's proven that he'll do anything if enough money's involved (ahem, Garfield) and I'd just as soon he not do it if he's gonna half *** it.

I would love to be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Bill Murray was actually a natural choice to play Garfield in the movies considering the actor who voiced him in the cartoons (Lorenzo Music) also voiced Peter Venkman in the Ghostbusters cartoon. I guess the two are sort of interchangeable voice-wise.

Wasn't part of the reason why Murray agreed to do the movie adaption of Garfield was because he thought it was being directed by the Coen brothers.

Everything I've read over the years was that Ackroyd was always ready to do a number 3 and most of the cast was willing except for Bill Murray. Bill Murray has apparently been the biggest hold out and cause for delays with this project since the character of Peter Venkeman was rather crucial to getting the team going in the first place but also provided a sense of leadership and balance amongst the big brain scientists on the team, (Ray and Igon). However replacing Bill Murray with another actor as Peter Venkeman just wouldn't fly at all.

So basically it sounds like a compromise was reached, Murray shows up for a bit in the movie and walks away with his pile of cash and Venkeman's son takes over and likely will seek to avenge his father. Also it would be an interesting sense of bitter irony if the Ghostbusters had to "bust" and contain Venkeman's ghost.

I don't care how ya do it, just do it.

I'm still not ready to believe this will ever happen.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

He says that, but the wit of Murray is very dry...

Also, while playing as himself in Zombieland, Murray does mention Garfield being a regret.
