System can't handle Ultra Mode max'd out

This is my current set-up for running CoH
Mobo: Asus M3A78-EM
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6 GHz
Mem: (4 Gig) OCZ Platinum Rev2 PC2-6400 800 MHz
Graphic Card: eVGA 8800GT KO
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
HD: Western Digital Raptor 150Gb 10,000RPM

My drivers all all up to date. Running XP SP3. I’ve overclocked the CPU 3100 Mhz (stable) and the 8800GT to 700 Mhz, so I believe I’m at about the bleeding edge of performance on this system. Unfortunately, even with adequate (air only) cooling, it’s still running hot enough to cook an egg on.

With the above, the best I seem to get is running Ultra mode at med to low settings and getting 20 fps max. I would like to max out all settings to enjoy the new eye candy, so my three questions are:

1. Anything else I can do to the current set up to boost performance?

2. I’m thinking of just overhauling the whole innards of the system with the following – would this be sufficient (or overkill) to run CoX in ultra mode with settings max'd out:

3. If I do upgrade the Graphics with a Radeon card, can I use my current 8800 to run the Nvidia Physx? – I read somewhere that that was possible – just wondering if it’s worth it to keep the old card.

first off, overclocking is not good. and overheating your system will cause complete failure. second, post a CoHHelper report so we can see other specs about your system to help you determine what you may need.

I'll say from experience that your CPU and vidcard can do with a boost. My 8800 didn't do very well at ultra-mode maxxed out (about 10 fps), but shinying that up to a 275, then off to an ATI 5770 gives me consistent 45-60fps when paired with an octocore 2.8Ghz Intel chip and 8GB RAM on a 64 bit OS. You can buy a prebuilt system like that for under $1K, or hash it together individually for cheaper. I'd give yourself more RAM anyhow if you can, presuming you've got an OS license for a 64 bit solution.

www.videocardbenchmark.net has some benchmarks posted which will give approximate answers to the video card debate. The 8800GT is listed at roughly 950-1000. The current NVidia high end is the GTX 480 listed at 3491, more than 3 times faster! That costs about $500, though. For about $300-$350 you can get a GTX 465 or GTX 470 that's listed at 2400 and 2900 respectively. The Radeon 5770 is listed at 1500, a bit slower.

Both AMD and Intel current CPUs are quite a bit faster than yours.

Note that even if you upgrade, you may not be able to run at max Ultra Mode with reasonable frame rates. They future-proofed the game a little in that regard.

I always go to the advanced Ultra Mode settings and tweak it until I find a good balance between "pretty" and "performance". Tweak the knobs until your performance is too low, then turn them back a bit.

Excellent point. I should have been more specific. The cooling was adequate BEFORE the OC-ing. The overclocking was done just to see if my current hardware could be manipulated to run CoH in Ultra mode. If the outcome was satisfactory (it isn't so far) then I would start looking into more efficient cooling.

Your current hardware cannot be manipulated into running Ultra Mode with any kind of performance. The most powerful version of the 8800 series is the Geforce 250 GTS. When comparing the raw specs of the 8800 Ultra, the best one, to the Geforce GTS 250, you can kind of get a sense of the problem you are facing.

The Geforce GTS 250 is the starting point for Nvidia Ultra Mode support for all ultra-mode options at once cards at 1680*1050. This does not mean all Ultra-Mode options in High. This means all Ultra-Mode options in Low.

The 8800 Ultra has a Core Clock Speed of 612mhz
The GTS 250 has a Core Clock Speed of 738mhz

The 8800 Ultra has a Shader Clock speed of 1.5ghz
The GTS 250 has a Shader Clock speed of 1.836ghz.

The 8800 Ultra has a theoretical Pixel fillrate of 14,688 megapixels.
The GTS 250 has a theoretical Pixel fillrate of 11,808 megapixels.

The 8800 Ultra has a theoretical Texel fillrate of 39,168 megatexels.
The GTS 250 has a theoretical Texel fillrate of 47,232 megatexels.

The 8800 Ultra had a 384bit memory controller with 103.7gb/s of memory bandwidth
The GTS 250 had only a 256bit memory controller with 70.4 gb/s of memory bandwidth

Yes, the 8800 Ultra was an astoundingly powerful card back in 2007. It also had an astounding price-tag ($830 MSRP), and puts off almost as much heat as Fermi.

Getting back to the point here: The very best 8800 card you could have, is still weaker in terms of Shaders, which City of Heroes makes extensive use of under Ultra-Mode. Even if you were able to overclock your 8800 to Geforce GTS 250 levels, you'll still struggle to do all options at once on low in 1680*1050.

Now, I'm betting you don't have an Ultra Card. I bet you have either an 8800 GT or GTS, and the performance gap between those and the Geforce GTS 250 is pretty wide.

Ultra-Mode is simply not within that card's power to run. You will need to go shopping for a new graphics card if you want Ultra-Mode in all it's high resolution shiny glory.

That 8800GT will never run ultra mode maxxed out. That is the card my wife now uses and we turned just a few UM setting on to keep the frames up and make it look pretty (she loves the water and the reflective windows). She is using a special edition released by eVGA. kickin card, but still an 8800GT

Hell my GTX260 (with 216 core) won't run ultra mode max settings, though I get close. I also believe its my dual core cpu slowing me down and am looking to update that VERY soon.

When the devs announced UM they said the 9800GT (8800GT for all practical purposes) was OK for minimum UM settings.

Second, and I see this a lot, UM settings use the World Detail Setting for shadows and reflection distances so if you were use to setting it to 200% you need to cut that back down to 100% and then tweak it till you are satisfied.
