Blood Bowl

This is about the tabletop version of Blood Bowl.....yes...the tabletop...not the videogame...

Anyway...so hows peeps doing?

Got fed up with Dwarves, friend pointed out to me that Dwarfish tactics are too 'slow and steady' for my style of play since he noticed that I'd often go 'lets try something crazy!' and Dwarves do not do crazy very well.

So now both of us have started new teams, he plays Skaven and I'm playing Chaos. Most guides for playing Chaos say one thing, you WILL lose your first 10-15 games while your guys level up.

Played two games, his Gutter runner levelled up inbetween the two games and got +1 Agility, which even he admits is overkill. Said Gutter runner then spent all but two turns of the entire second game knocked unconscious.

Dude to the Chaos teams complete lack of skills we ended up nicknaming the team from Slaaneshs' Slaughters to the Suicide Kings. This was mainly due to every single time a 'both down' roll came up my Chaos warriors would be knocked the ground while his Skaven would suffer KOs or Injuries (he was forced to use an Apothacary role to stop one of his Skaven getting a 'broken back' result for -1 agility...). This was mainly done by one Chaos warrior who we have nicknamed Narcoleptic John...we reckon he falls asleep midcharge and just flattens the Skaven with his bulk by sheer accident.

On to advancement.

Will be getting atleast two of my Beastmen Tentacles to stop the nimble buggers of Skaven dodging past my lines, will get the Minotaur Claw and Block to compliment his Mighty Blow for when my friend finally buys his Rat Ogre.

One of my Beastmen levelled and has +1 movement, he will be the designated ball carrier.

is Blood Bowl still in print?

Loved that game back when it came out, we had a weekly league that met up in a friend's gaming basement. Super fun.

Actually, most of those old GW tabletop games were a blast to play- Space Hulk, Man o' War, Dark Future and my personal favorite Chainsaw Warrior.

One of my nerd buddies activated my jealousy gland a while back when he scored a mint unopened Chainsaw Warrior off Ebay for 75 bucks.

Yes it is still in print, infact you can buy the full box version from the Games Workshop website for £50 (not sure about dollars).

All the teams are available too under their specialist section (where you'd find Blood Bowl boxed version) OR you can download the rules for free (the living rule book, edition 6 is about to come out) and buy the team you like plus make your own board for on the cheap action.

That can be true, but it's still entirely possible to win with a rookie Chaos team. You have to play very smart though, and a little lucky. And only throw those blocks you get the advantage for. The team's high ST (and pseudo-ST with Horns) works wonders in the early games. Oh, and Team Re-Rolls are invaluable.

Early success depends somewhat on your opposition. I've had the worst trouble with teams that are designed to fight and are better at it than Chaos out of the gate (Orcs or Dwarfs). Against Humans, Elves or Lizardmen, say, I just beat the unholy heck out of their goal scorers until they're eliminated from play.

I do love the lack of skills on the Chaos team, it's very telling of the race's character. I like to think of them as warriors and beastmen who approach the sport merely as another avenue for violence in the name of their dark god... Soldiers who basically put down their weapons just five minutes before walking onto the pitch. They have no training, they don't even know how to throw a legal block, because they have very little interest in actually playing the game.

With a starting Chaos team I always had miserable luck against Lizardmen. The Saurus can match your muscle (and they can have more of them) and the Skinks are just really hard to knock down or will just run through your defense. And I still believe the Kroxigor to be one of the better Big Guys in the game.

You can definitely win early games with Chaos. Just play smart and hopefully a few die rolls go your way.

I will admit Lizardmen can be a bit of a coin toss. I just try to weather the Saurus and Kroxigor, pressure the Skinks and orchestrate triple dice blocks on the Skinks. Those 3-dice blocks are where my TRRs tend to get used up too. Of course a good opponent will be doing everything he can to avoid this tactic.

The Kroxigor is scary fast but I find the Minotaur is the best Big Guy, hands down. Love a Frenzy- and Horns-boosted blitz. And failing Wild Animal doesn't remove your tackle zone, unlike Bone Head/Very Stupid.

I used to play Blood Bowl. I had several different teams (it was just me and my brother, so we had 4 teams each for variety). I had

1) Dwarfs. Team was the Axbearers. Highest ranking team in our "league."

2) Halflings. Named the Jumbo Shrimps. A lot of fun to play even though they usually got pounded. Ever see three Halflings kill an Ogre? I have.

3) Norse. Named Thor's Thunder.

4) Nurgle's Rotters. Named Quarentine.

I used to love Bloodbowl (although Necromunda is the only one I have continued playing).

I played wood elves for preference but I also had a fun (if rather rubbish) treeman team.

Ah, those were the Days!

True on the Minotaur, but he also has a lower AV and if he gets knocked down you almost have to use Blitz with him to get him to stand up. I will admit I've sent many a player crowd surfing with judicious use of a Minotaur near the sidelines, though.

All of the Big Guys have their disadvantages, but if you get lucky enough to get doubles on them and get Block for a skill, a lot of those negatives disappear quickly.

Meh. I do kinda hate wasting a Blitz on a guy who might not go through with it. It might be wasteful, but I prefer to just get my Minotaur Block if he doesn't have it and Tentacles, then try to set him up as an obstacle people are forced to move around.

Speaking of Tentacles. On its own it's not as much fun as Tentacles with Shadowing. Guaranteed to ruin the day of Skavens and Skinks sooner or later. And when that Skink does get hit, that Stunty trait will come back to hurt it fatally.

I never played Chaos past one or two matches because I did get frustrated at the lack of starting skills. I do pretty well with various types of teams but the various Elf and Undead teams seem to be my strong suit.

Granted, compared to dwarves for example, they look pretty bad, but their combination of solid allround stats and the stuff they can get through Mutations make them out to be a lot of fun in the long run. Essentially, I'd spent the first half of my first games trying to injure or kill as many enemy players as possible (not nice, I know) while non-Dwarf players would try to play around me.

It helps that I prefer defense and runs with regard to American Football and can't stand the Joe Montana style passing game. No matter how much more effective decicated throwers and catchers might be. You'll see how helpful those are when I've broken all their bones.

One of the things I like about Chaos is you just never really know how your team is going to evolve. In my table top days I ended up with a Chaos team that had a pretty decent passing game. Granted, I wasn't going to out gun an elf team, but it was fun to take an orc or dwarf team by surprise.

The Minotaur is the only Big Guy I build for Blitzing, Horns is an excellent advantage. All the others, even the Rat Ogre (who is very similar to the Minotaur) I build as the usual blocker. I do agree in general that making the Big Guy a large annoying obstacle is a very good tactic.

As an example, in my current single player campaign in the video game, I have a rank 5 Minotaur who learned Juggernaut, Claws, Pro and +1 MA. I'm so happy I spent the double for Pro, it makes all the difference and makes the guy quite a reliable engine of slaughter.

Pro's re-roll doesn't need a Loner check, and if the 50% Pro check is failed it can still be re-rolled with a TRR (which does need a Loner check). Basically, if my Minotaur throws a block or blitz every turn I only have a 1 in 16 chance of failing Wild Animal while I still have TRRs left. Obviously that's a lot better than the unskilled 1 in 6 chance, and unless I'm unlucky I shouldn't lose my blitz than once a game.

Finally, Juggernaut replaces Block for blitzing so I don't feel I'm missing Block at all.

Oh yeah, and Tentacles and Shadowing (and Tackle) is good fun! I like Disturbing Presence too, especially when combining it with Pass Block.
