Is a Supergroup a Brand Name?
It's just my belief that when you wear an SG tag, you represent that SG. Your actions reflect on everyone else in the SG. I have actually, in the past, booted people from an SG (back when I cared about running one) for this very reason. Not before speaking to them about it and giving them fair warning ahead of time, mind you.
It's this same reason that some companies expressly forbid their employees to engage in certain activities while wearing a company uniform or driving a company vehicle. The US military is a classic example. People see the uniform first and the individual second. Even if it is not intentional, there is a subconscious association. |
I can still remember the silly sod who decided to take his hatred of Ghost Falcon sitting PLers into his own hands many years ago. Not only did my mixed level 8 man team get annoyed enough to /petition his rear end, but we also lodged a complaint with the leader of his SG, who we happened to know. Dude got a three day vacation from the game and a boot from his SG for his troubles. His SG leader didn't appreciate him sullying their colours.
I'd totally forgotten about player notes even until I saw them mentioned here. If I PUG with some bad players today, whoops, cat's on fire, gotta run. When I PUG tomorrow, my chances of meeting them again are about nil, far as I can tell. If it's someone broadcasting idiocy, nine times out of ten I find someone else shoots them down publicly before I can even type in a response; I think I've all of once put someone like that on ignore.
Life's too short to worry about the idiots.
Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
I barely even notice Supergroups any more. And I haven't joined one in ages. Heck, I created a one-member Supergroup for one of my characters who was getting too many random SG invites called "No I don't want to join your Supergroup" or something close to that anyway.

There was an event/anniversary lead by a group called DATA on Infinity, and an entire SG mobilized to grief that event. I have not and will not associate with that other SG. Period. (No, I will not name the offending group.)
Beyond things like that? I tend not to let individuals spoil my opinion of an SG. And I lead my own SG on Infinity and Justice that are quite discerning when it comes to membership. It is primarily a place to house all of mine and my BF's alts (with a few in-game friends as well). That tends to keep any invite related issues at bay.
Nah, I'd say one experience with two people from an SG I've never encountered before shouldn't lead to a sweeping generalization of the entire SG.
For all you know, they may have been two friends who just joined a new SG and that SG hasn't learned who they really are yet or what those players are truly about (If they were that bad).
I'm never one for sweeping generalizations though... And from one experience? No way. Everyone has bad nights. Just about anyone will end up making bad SG invites... things happen.
If I ignored everyone that rubbed me the wrong way, I wouldn't be posting here!
And...
I have to say, the commonly mentioned notion that "first impressions are everything" is something I consider absolute bunk.
I mean, sure, many people seem to cling to this... consciously and/or subconsciously... But I think it is a mistake.
No matter how many times my first instincts and/or impressions may be correct... those few that may prove me wrong and/or change are far more valuable experiences than what simply sticking with some distorted mental notation based off of the first chain of happenstances upon meeting has to offer.

So my question is, how many people think along the same lines? When you see a particularly good or bad player, do you pay attention to what SG they are from? Does it influence your willingness to possibly join that SG at some point or take part in teams with members of that SG in the future? |
That's just hilarious. I dislike them even more because they tried to take over the SG I am in by force. [This did not work btw. This is the thing that first earned my ire.... the first of many]. They also like to show up at hami raids and tell everyone which team they should be on, and if the team is led by someone not in their SG they take tremendous offense. "We need you to be over there with Hive Mind X. Drop team now and he'll pick you up."
Such crap makes me mourn the fact that as of yet, we lack a middle-finger emote.
With that said there are several SGs whom I am always pleased to see a representative of on the team, because they're full of great players. Into every life a little rain must fall though
I'm in some supergroups with char.s I have totally forgotten about, and the ones I do remember I haven't met every new recruit, or even half the people that were there before me. There are some people in the SG I know and am friends with, a few whom are acquaintances, and the rest are a complete unknown to me.
I think It's a little unfair to judge the whole group based on the actions of just a few members.
