Remember that Avatar: the Last Airbender sequel that Nickelodeon inadvertantly mentioned when looking for animators? They've officially announced it -- Avatar: The Legend of Korra will air (hee hee) next year, and be helmed by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original creators. As for the plot, here's what THR has to say:
Tentatively titled "The Legend of Korra," the animated series will premiere in 2011 and focus on the next Avatar, a young female called Korra.

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," said Brown Johnson, president, animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

"Korra" is set 70 years after the events of "Airbender" and sees Korra moving to Republic City to master her final element - air. With the guidance of the previous avatar Aang's son Tenzin, she has to fight crime and face a growing anti-bending movement that threatens to rip the metropolis apart.
And Superhero Hype seems to have found a longer version of the press release, which includes...
The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang - a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City - a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

I had no idea this was happening O.o

WOW seems like you all already knew

So, it's obviously Tenzin is the son of Aang and Katara and follows after his father. The question is, will we see anyone related to Suko or Toph?

I wonder if personal firearms have been invented in this world?

I wonder if Toph was able to teach others how to metal bend?

lets see, at the end of The Last Airbender, Aang is technically 121 or 122 years old. So add seventy years to that, he'll be nearing 200 years. King Boomy, as if none of us can forget that guy, is 100+ is The Last Airbender. So chances are we'll see older versions of Toph, Soka, Aang, Katara, Suko, Mai and all the rest of our pals.

Well, I doubt we'll see Aang though, given Korra is the new Avatar. Another thing I'm curious about is if Korra is the new Avatar:
Year 0 : The last Air Bender ends
Year 55 (estimate) : Korra is born
Year 70 : The Legend of Korra

Sooo...that would mean Aang died at around the physical age of 70-ish? Kinda young for an Avatar, don't you think?

Maybe part of the story is how Aang died so young? Although I AM more curious who Toph eventually ends up with.

I've been tracking this- I can't give sources very easily, unfortunately, but what here's what I've seen via various Twitter feeds and Con comments and whatnot:

  • No guns. Apparently LoK is going to be very Steampunk-ish, but the creators have stated that guns are not a route they want to go.
  • Aang's dead, but will be making appearances 'in his own way'. Korra is, indeed, the next Avatar, which kinda means that Aang's not around anymore.
  • Apparently, Aang's time in the iceberg, suspended animation or no, counted against his "Avatar time", thus him dying so (relatively) young.
  • There's a group called 'Anti-Benders' running around, although they've been closemouthed as to exactly what part they'll play, or even if they'll be antagonistic.
  • Most, if not all, of the action will take place in and around a place called Republic City

Oh, and I picked up most of my info following links via here (don't worry, it's safe-ish- it's the TVTropes forums, not the time-distorting articles )
