Old salvage?

Logging on after a 4 year hiatus, I found that the new salvage storage bins in my base only hold 30 pieces now. My original bin though still has 700 pieces of old salvage pre-issue 9. In the last few days of playing and messing around with the invention system, it doesn't seem like any of that older salvage is being used. So I'm wondering if there is any use for those 700 older salvage items in the new invention system, or can I sell it, or just destroy it? Thanks.

The old base salvage no longer serves any direct purpose. Some people collect it so you might be able to sell it. If not you can convert it into invention salvage at an invention table (convert it to brainstorms and then the brainstorms into salvage).

You can either sell that old salvage on the market or convert it into Brain Storms. The brain storm idea salvage can then be converted to random invention salvage.

You might check the prices on the old salvage. Some of it is very rare and collectors might pay quite a bit for it.

Also, if you convert it to brain storms, don't do Random Tech or Random Arcane salvage rolls. Just do the plain "All" rolls ("All Common/Uncommon/Rare Rolls"). You'll get much more salvage that way and have a better chance of something valuable.

The big change was that Base Salvage was phased out. The salvage bin capacity was reduced to 30 at the same time. So yes, there is no actual in-game use for any of the old Base Salvage anymore. However, there are people who want to hang onto it as "museum pieces"; and most of them want a complete set. If you've got some of the pieces that a collector is missing, then you can likely sell them for a decent amount.

Yeah, check the Market first to see if any of your Base Salvage are being coveted by the collectors. Some are reportedly going for millions.

For the duds, go to a University to use their Invention tables (or your own if your Base has one) to convert them to Brainstorms. When you bring up the Invention interface window, one of the action is called "Convert". Brainstorms are an intermediate state. You'll convert Brainstorms to regular usable Invention Salvage.

So I was going through Wentworths to see what Base Salvage pieces were actually going for. There seems to be someone buying up some of the mundane ones for about 13K. I also noticed quite a few had no history which I guess they hadn't had any activity since the last Market server wipe (what was that for again? I don't remember.) Would this mean that they are particularly rare?

Then I came across this baby:

My first thought was that someone used this salvage for an old school Influence transfer. However, we were given the ability to email attachments and Influence to ourselves 2 months prior to this transaction date and that's a lot of outstanding bids to risk such an maneuver. Was this a massive fat finger fumble? But the particular amount 1,400,000,005 argues against it.

Lots of people don't know that you can email influence. We had a question here in PQ about that just last week, in fact.

i'd wager that the person was trying to put 1,400,005 and either the system hiccuped or he miss counted zeros.

I think that Shark or Kheldarn is right about what actually happened. A sale of that magnitude when the other sales aren't even a fraction as high is obviously an accident. A server transfer would be the next possibility. No chance in hell it was an intentional bid on something they wanted..
