Hi guys. This is my second elec/shield brute, though the first that I am actually doing my best to build to its optimum potential (my first was quite haphazard).

Two builds coming. First is my levelling build, which will mostly be teaming, just general playing nothing specific, want to use him to taste a little bit of everything. Second build will be what I respec him into once I've hit 50 and turn him into a solo farming toon to, hopefully, provide infamy for my league of extraordinary alts.

I dont know where to begin....

This build is bad. Its expensive and lacks focus. Im not knocking you personally...just the build is bad. With shield defense (imo) you want to get to 45% positional defense, then increase your global recharge, then maybe look at your total HP....Regardless focus is important

Instead of critiquing Im going to point you to the search function and this little thread where Tonality lays out two very nice builds (one of which was reasonably cheap).

I'll comment on your second build. It takes a while to get acquainted with slotting. It is not a surprise that the build doesn't look good on the first try. I think your power choice is ok. I would try to squeeze in build up, phalanx fighting (for higher defense), and grant cover (for higher defense debuff resistance) if possible. For your slotting, Frogfather already said it. I don't know how much inf you have. I made you a semi-budget build below. The set bonus is mainly to soft-cap defense. I suggest that you go for something cheaper at the beginning. You can upgrade slowly as you have more experience in the game.

Looking at some of those builds makes me want to scream...so here's what i currently have and use. BTW id go GW patron FTW. Dark is awesome, way better than mu. Gloom rules, dark obliteration is great for more -tohit and another aoe, darkest night saves lives...and needs an award for it, also it stacks with AAO for -dam. i strongly suggest using it.

Heh, sounds like I caused some of you physical pain with my bad slotting, sorry bout that. I knew it was probably going to be pretty bad because I have almost zero experience with IO sets.

First of all, what does everyone think of the first build, cause at the moment that is the most important one. I just hit 21 and I am going to outfit him with IOs at 27, so I want to know if I should respec my slotting and/or power choices before I do that.

Secondly how expensive is expensive? Like I said, I don't have any experience with high level IO sets, but I do have experience with the market. I currently have a touch under 100 mil infamy and working my way up.

Frogfather - You're right, it does lack focus. I hadn't seen that build you pointed me too but I had looked through the guides thread and saw that the guide for the elec/shield brute had gotten 45% positional defenses. I think I just backed off a little when I saw the % numbers hitting red in MIDs thanks to ED.

Twilight - This may be showing my inexperience (as if I hadn't done that already) but why no slotting for boxing? I was going to use boxing to replace brawl as my auto attack so I wanted it to to as much damage with as little endurance as quickly as possible. Do the numbers mean that is just not worth it?

PBaRmy- I know this sounds strange when asking for help to optimise a build, but I want Mu just because the powers mesh more thematically. GW may have more to offer, but as long as Mu isn't totally gimped then I'll stick with it.

Purple and pvp IO recipes are like a hundred mil to a few billion a piece. So, a 100 mil maybe able to buy you a couple such recipes.

There are some personal preference here. So, I can only tell you what I think. Boxing's damage is quite comparable to your level 1 melee attack. For your case, boxing is quite similar to charged brawl. Both boxing and charged brawl are great to fill the time gap in an attack chain. I think it's sufficient to have one of them. I suggest that you can either skip charged brawl at level one and pick boxing at level 6, or use charged brawl only. For the latter case, boxing is taken just to open up the fighting pool. This way, your build will be more efficient. There is nothing wrong if you want to use both.

My recommendation for keeping it affordable is to work on one build at a time. Respec one of the builds the way you want it to be, but play the other one while you buy/find the IOs it. Once it is finished, respec the second while playing the first.

This way you always have one build that is fun and functional, and you have a clear goal. Plus, it is surprising how fast you can fill up a build.
