AV Soloers: Katana/Willpower vs Broadsword/Shield Defense
With no sets, I don't think either of them will be doing anything against AVs.
Strictly speaking... neither of them.
At high levels... scrappers really shouldn't be taking on an AV. That's normally the job of the Tank. That's also why you suddenly started face-planting more often, and probably have found it more difficult to land your defense boosting attack.
Scrappers don't have the HP, or the defenses, to take AV alpha strikes on a regular basis. Nor do they have the taunt aura's to hold an AV's attention. I've got both blasters and controllers that can out-aggro tauntless tanks and spines/fire scrappers.
One of the reasons you can get away with tanking AV's early in the game is that they really don't have any esoteric attacks or oddities. When you reach the later game and start going up against Rularuu, Romulous, any of the Statesman TF AV's, the Praetorian AV's, or the Rikti AV's, you'll start consistently running into AV's that just don't play fair.
Most later level groups also start racking up various debuffs / buffs. The Nemesis, for example, can stack vengeance. Arachnos can pretty much hit you with every debuff imaginable. Malta have sappers. Carnies have -regen / -recovery and loads of mez effects. Rikti have Mages. The list goes on of enemies that do more than just smack you with a baseball bat.
***
Now, I know, you are probably thinking... but I see people on the forums all the time talking about how their scrapper took on such and such an AV... why can't I?
The short version is, most of the scrappers on the forums going after AV's have tweaked out builds with massive IO set bonus's. So yes, if you racked up some defense buffs, hp cap increases, recharge increases, or so on, you could probably hold your own against pretty much any AV in the game...
***
So, if you want something to keep an AV BUSY... make a tank.
If you want something that can actually SOLO an AV, as in DEFEAT IT... make a Fire / Shield and have several thousand merits and a couple billion influence stored away to IO yourself out.
With IOs you can soft-cap Kat/WP to Melee and most elemental with 2 stacks of Parry. This build needs to be re-tweaked a little since the BOTZ nerf but you get the idea.

Alright, thanks for the replies; I have been humbled.
I became a bit lost when my Katana/WP was soloing +1/x5 just fine aside from Arachnos/CoT/Pantheons due to their exotic damages, but when I consistently died against Tuatha de Dannans, a villain group consisting entirely of melee smash damage users... I became a bit disheartened.
I'm guessing it might even out a bit once I get tough/weave and start replacing IOs with sets.
In retrospect... if scrappers are invincible solo machines I guess no one would be playing tanks...

In terms of tanks vs. scrappers, they just play much differently. A scrappers job is to basically just kill stuff, while a tankers job is to grab aggro and protect teamates. The two at's can overlap or even try to replace the others function, but each are clearly better at their own job.

500 merits and 2-3 billions is more then enough.
Actually, he never mentionned not using inspirations. So he can get away with even less ressources and picking a worst combo.
You really love exagerating?
"It's a scrapper. If he can't handle it, no one can." -BrandX
Except that almost any combo can solo "an AV" and you really don't need several thousands merits and a couple billion influence.

Is there enough endurance on the above Bladesinger build? (I'm asking because I've had some endurance problems on my kat/wp scrapper and I was thinking I needed to add a 4th slot to the endurance powers.)
My WP scrapper is four slotted with Performance Shifter in Quick Recovery, and three slotted with Performance Shifter in Stamina. He has no end problems at all, even in long AV fights. Could you post the data link for your build?

Kindly stop posting misinformation, will you? I just did the entire A Hero's Hero arc on my Elec/Shield scrapper and tanked every AV for the team I did it with. Usually a single Luck was all I needed to be fine. Also, by the way, Shields and Invuln regularly rip aggro away from some Tankers. And Scrappers CAN take confront.

Stalkers must run away, Scrappers can't solo and/or tank av's and Powersink needs accuracy.

So I recently made a katana/wp scrapper, and brought him up to level 30. He started off pretty slow at first, but as soon as he gets Divine Avalanche it's like all of a sudden he's a badass scranker. Heck, I even recently tanked Arakhan and most of the Moonfire TF with only 3 people backing me up (the others d/ced when Freedom went down) and with a lvl 26 Peacebringer being my only healer.
But as I get to higher leveled missions and machinegun/baseball bat wielding villains become increasingly less common, I find myself faceplanting alot if I miss even one Divine Avalanche hits or didn't have a small purple handy. It seemed like if I only have a LITTLE bit more .vs everything defense (around 15%), I'd do fine... which is why I made a BS/SD scrapper.
Now I'm wondering, is stacking Parry twice + the defense brought about by SD= god mode scrapper? Speaking strictly in soloing AVs, is the WP scrapper going to win in the long run because of his superior regen/recovery? Or will the SD scrapper triumph because of his higher avoidance and damage output?
Also, both scrappers in this said scenario only have invention origin enhancements, no sets.
