CoH Disables my computer's network connection

Posted

This problem just started today, yesterday everything was fine.

Today I can't even finish a mission. After playing for five to ten minutes I will get the message 'lost connection to mapserver'. At this point it will not restore coinnection and if I try to open an internet browser it cannot find any site. I have to have the computer diagnose the problem and then tell it to reset the network connection.

Once it finishes I can once again log back into the game and browse the web. If I do not play the game then the network connection between my computer and the modem remains intact and I can stream multiple episodes of a show over netflix with no interuption or resets recquired.

After remaining connected for some time I tried playing CoH again and within 5-10 minutes my network once again shut down and I had to reset the router.

Really not sure what is going on here, any help would be appreciated.

Hmm, no help huh?

Problem is still persisting, and can't seem to figure out what is causing it.

Try spending some time without CoH up (perhaps an hour) and running and see if the problem manifests as well. If it does, then it would be a problem with your ISP or with your network settings, or your modem, or router, or one of countless other possibilities unrelated to the game.

Try monitor your internet connection in CoH using /netgraph 1.

It is supposed to be 'nice a green lawn'. If not, see if there patterns that might help troubleshooting.

Also, if playing on the US servers, try both those east and west and see if there are any difference.

@Willowpaw
Sadly, if I am not playing CoH then I have no issues with my connection, after I got tired of trying to figure it out last night, I left CoH off and watched a few episodes of Bones on netflix, it streamed them with absolutely no problems.

@panthera
Prior to having this problem my netgraph showed gren with only occasional hiccups that would bump to redfor less than a second then go back to green, the spikes occured randomly and inconsistently. Haven't tried netgraph yet post network issue, will give it a shot later and see what it tells me.

try reseting your modem and router first. i do this when i start to have problems and it seems to fix it. make sure you turn off the comp, unplug the modem and router, then plug in the modem first and then the router.

I'm having this same exact issue. It started for me on Wed.
It only happens when not in an instance.
I can stand in an instanced mission for hours with no issue.
Zone outside and start to travel to the next one and lost connection message happens pretty quick.

It's forcibly disconnecting my adaptor too. Making me reconnect manually before getting back on.

No other program does this. As the OP stated, I too can run internet with no issue for hours. It's something with the game.

My friend thinks its the wireless signal not being able to transmit the larger amount of data. I'm going to try plugging the modem directly tonight and see if that solves it.

Same problem here. It mainly happens in zones with a lot of other PCs around (it was difficult to move thru Atlas without constant LCTM messages, and took me 5 minutes to run across pocket d...), but I just dc'd and lost internet while standing in Kings Row.

I'm pretty even-keel, but disruption of internet connectivity altogether (the laptop has to reconnect to the network after I LCTM out of the game) is brand new, and only happens in CoH.

No software firewall running that I'm aware of. I ended up posting a CoHHelper and HijackThis output in the "Players experiencing issues..." thread, since I'm having trouble updating my video drivers (I install the update from ATI's website, but nothing changes...) and thought that might be the cause, but the problem only seems to get worse, and even persists in Safe Mode.

Just as a side question - and assuming you're in the US - does it happen with both east and west coast based servers?

(This is more out of curiosity, can't see why it'd disable a network adaptor - there's really no "larger amount of data," AFAIK, given all the graphical stuff is clientside. Though... hmmm... how is it with graphics - for testings sake - drpoped down to minimum, since I see mention of it not being an issue in instances?)

Tried it on Virtue and Victory with the same results.

Then I plugged in an ethernet cable and stopped it from connecting wirelessly, and the problem almost completely went away.

I think that the new issue doesn't play well with 6-year-old Wireless-B routers - or at least, not mine...

Huh. I may have to see what happens wirelessly here.

(Just out of curiosity, again - updated wireless drivers? What wireless card and router, any security and what type? Just since the info may be helpful.)

Not recently. /em shame

The router's a Linksys 802.11b (I think model is BEFW11S4, but am not upstairs to check it at the moment). Wireless on the laptop is an Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapter. Security is pretty basic - windows firewall/AVIRA.

I'm also having this issue, on 3 computers that connect wireless .

1. Amd Phenom x4 925. 275 gtx 6 mb of ram. Broad-com wireless adapter win 7 64

1. intel core 2 duo e6300 4 mb ram lynksys adapter XP

1. Amd dual core 4 mb ram Dynex adaper XP

Just started since the push to live for i17. I have no issues on test, just live.

Wireless modem is a at&t 2wire. no issues in BF BC2, or Modern combat 1 and 2

PettyTheftz, try connecting a computer with an ethernet cable and see if the problems persist.

That would be good troubleshooting information to include in a Support Ticket.

I'm sure you've filed a support ticket through the PlayNC site, right?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I am having this exact same issue on a Wired internet connection. It began happening the day Issue 17 was released.

I've been testing it by doing a constant ping to my ISP's Gateway, and without COH running I get a consistent, solid connection with an average ping response time of 8ms. Once I'm logged in to COH and select my character my connection becomes horrible. This seems to occur on roughly every other login, which is even stranger.

Interesting. I have a problem (well, it's more an annoyance) that is almost similar. I'm also using a wireless connection with an older router that is usually running 24/7. It happens now and then and for no apparent reasons that the router cuts the connection to the internet after I played CoH for some time (usually happens after a timeframe of a few minutes and up to an hour or two). After resetting the router works fine for several hours at least. However, this started to happen a long long time ago. Before I13, I think. Usually I reset the router before I start playing CoH and that helps to lessen the risk of an unintended disconnection a lot. This behavior did not change with I17 - it did not get worse (or better).

I'm having the same issue.

With CoH running, netgraph goes greenREDgreenREDgreenREDgreen... and wireless connection drops. Rinse, repeat. The problem is steady and makes the game unplayable.

Just to sanity check and see if the problem is my system or network, I have another similar online game that also has netgraph. Ran around in it for an hour no problem and the netgraph is a steady field of green.

Back to CoH and it's the xmas themed greenREDgreenREDgreen netgraph with wireless connection drops.

Try reducing the amount of data the client has to transfer by following these steps:

- Go to Menu/Options, and scroll all the way down in "General". You'll see three options to "Hide buff numbers". Enable them all. That'll stop the buff numbers for every power from being transmitted.

- Remove data-intensive channels such as To Hit Rolls from all your chat tabs. This does not have a HUGE volume of data, but it's significant.

- Make sure you have the Combat Attributes window closed and that you're not monitoring any attributes.

With that, the amount of data COH transfers falls to 2-3KB/s idle, 10-20KB/s while fighting on a team.

Yuck. That is one ugly connection. You appear to be suffering from regular drops every 5-10 seconds that last 2-10 seconds. If this is wireless, I can only recommend getting updated drivers; especially if it's a realtek chipset, as a lot of wireless cards ship with really old drivers that potentially suck. If it's a wired connection, I got nothin' other than letting windows "repair" it to flush the DNS cache and other things, but it's not likely to help; that connection looks too unstable.

I'm having the same issue since re-subbing a couple of days ago. It's seems to be fairly random, but always and only with CoX. It happened a few times in a row last night on my MM while trying to summon and equip all of my bots...not sure if that's significant or not. The only changes I can think of from the last time I played are that I've moved to a new apartment and any updates to CoX in the past six or so months. I was leaning toward the former, but after happening upon this post, and the fact that it only occurs while running CoX, I've reconsidered. Please tell me someone figured this one out.
