Memory Leaks - I17
CoH has not been shy about using more than 1GB of RAM in the past, even on systems with less memory than yours. I mentioned 1.2GB because that was the number you mentioned in the post I replied to. If you had not only been skimming my posts, you might have noticed that I have previously mentioned that other memory usage numbers you have quoted are not necessarily excessive either.
If high CPU usage was the issue, you would not necessarily get "corruption all over the place", you would get slow performance for other applications. Slow performance for Ventrillo (specifically due to high CPU usage by other programs) is one known cause for sound issues with said program. Yes, your processor *should* be able to handle the load, but, as you may have noticed, *there appears to be something wrong*. The interesting thing is then to determine *what* is wrong, and being able to rule out things that are *not* wrong is very helpful in that process. Note: Rule out, not dismiss. Also, it seems somewhat unlikely that high memory usage *on its own* would cause the system issues you are describing. In your extremely experienced opinion, does it seem likely that a program using less than half of your (rather significant) available memory would cause the severe reactions you are seeing? You may want to run that by your professional tech friends too. As I've said from the start, it's very possible that i17 comes with a memory leak, but a high memory usage is not in itself proof of a memory leak. Ruling out other possibilities helps. Figuring out why it's happening to you but not everyone else helps. Narrowing down the exact circumstances in which the problem occurs helps. Now, this forum is a place where players can get help from other players. You should ask yourself what your purpose here is; do you want to vent, or do you want people to try and help you? If it's the latter, I would suggest that you drop the attitude, stop insulting and neg-repping the people who try to help you, and *start answering questions*, regardless of how silly they may seem to you. Posting the CoH Helper/Hijack This reports that were previously suggested could also be helpful. |
Gotta love finding an error that only comes up on SOME PC's , not all I've been gaming in CoH for the better part of 2 hours, settings at maximum with FSAA and AF set to x4 , Its currently gobbling up 1.1 Gb. I've seen it use more, couldn't tell you specifically why. Honestly, I expect CoH to start using up more memory and cpu resources now, even with ultra mode disabled.
Reason being, I've noticed that even some of the older costume pieces have been revamped. I have a female character in 'tops with skin' option and was commenting just today that her t-shirt looked a lot better now as the texture has been improved. higher resolution textures will mean more to load in correct?
I am catching some lag when exiting missions, but that is it, other than that, no issues on both our main pc's .
Tex if it helps, we are running
(pc1)
Windows 7
amd dual core 3Ghz
4Gb ram
Asus nForce 5 Motherboard AM2+
nVidia GTX260 197.44 drivers
(pc2)
Windows Xp Pro Sp3
amd dual core 2.5Ghz
4Gb ram
Foxconn nForce 4 Motherboard S939
nVidia 8800GTssc 197.44 drivers
Beta testing for a couple of other MMO's , I've caught more than one instance where the issue came from the motherboard chipset. Even between different revisions. For example, in one game, we found that nForce 2 boards were working fine but nForce 4 were constantly timing out and disconnecting, basically making it impossible to do anything in game.
Best of luck guys.

For those of you that are seeing this memory leak, what kind of video card are you running and with what driver version and how fast is the game leaking memory? How many KB or MB per minute?
And also, does turning all of the graphics options down clear up the memory leak? If you are so inclined, is there a specific graphics option or options which, when turned on, the memory leak is evident (or more evident)? |
Operating System: XP Pro
User Client: PC
Video Driver: Nivida GeForce 9600 GSO (512 DDR3)

That is what I got which the tech support guy on the phone told me it was more then enough to run game at capacity. I do NOT have the Ultra mode settings on. Pre i17 I never had these problems. He suggested a few things which I did do.
Updated all graphic drivers, all Windows files and programs. I troubleshooted all of those; called Tech support and they had me shut down all the 3rd party programs, uninstall and reinstall my antivirus/antispyware. This didn't help.
They had me run Pingplotter for a half hour and send that file in, to which they told me it was my internet connection (though the company they said was to blame wasn't my provider, that made me laugh).
When running City of Heroes/Villians; any and all other programs on my computer screech to a halt practically. Windows Live Messenger no longer responds while on loading screens and those are ten times slower then they used to be. When not in loading screens Windows Live Messenger will blink at me if someone writes to me but does not show up until I click off the game and onto the actual messaging window. Web pages won't load fast if at all. As many have stated Ventrillo will not key up while selected on the game screen (To note I play in windowed mode and don't use my full screen) If I click onto ventrillo and off of the game, it seems to work fine, click back onto game and it stops responding, and Ventrillo pops up a message saying that my sound card sent information to fast and closed.
I have all sounds and music shut off on the game so this shouldn't be a problem coming from the game. Also, programs like Winamp will lock up and finish what ever song they were on but don't allow any thing to change. If I open a Notepad file while playing the game, I have to wait for it to unlock itself.
So these problems for me are not just ventrillo or internet related programs. If City of Heroes is running, then EVERYTHING else has problems too. I'm uninstalling the entire game today and reinstalling in hopes that maybe it was as simple as a corrupted file while updating the patch to i17. I'll let everyone know if this fixes or helps with anything and I really hope it does. It's kind of hard to play the game on one computer and have my netbook up just to talk to people on Ventrillo while I play the game. LOL

GOOD NEWS Everyone: Update to my problem
Upon installing ATI 10.4 Drivers, and testing it for over 45 minutes ( things had messed up sooner before ) both me and my roommate had CoH and Vent running, and had no problems (Yet) That we could find. It is possible 10.1 was the cause of the issues, but more extensive testing will be needed to be done durring the week, with longer game play time. I will update if anything else messes up.
I'm having similar problems with Skype that started when i17 dropped. I can hear the conversation just fine, but friends report that my voice drops out. It's not a loose mic cord, and the problem goes away when I alt-tab out of the game. CPU usage is very high, but I don't really see why it would crowd out only my outgoing voice.
I did install new Realtek Audio drivers for Win 7 (Asus has no Win 7 updates) and new Nvidia drivers today, so we'll see how it goes. Otherwise I'll have to dust off the old PC just to run Skype.
My system:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64
2.53 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5GC-MX/1333
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
4 GB RAM
Update to this, Uninstalled City of Heroes then reinstalled. Waiting for that to patch all the way up from the Good vs Evil was a pain but I did it! Unfortunately, it did nothing to fix the problem. It still just locks everything up as soon as I click onto the game, which still, runs as smooth as ever. From the looks of it, for some reason the game is being a massive resource hog. On average, even if Vent, Windows Live Messenger, and a firefox page is running - I average 400MBs of memory used and spike between 0% CPU usage and 15% CPU usage.
Soon as the game is on, even of ALL other programs are off - including going through MSCONFIG and shutting all that off, Im hitting 100% CPU usage and memory usage shoots up to 1.48GB. I'm hard pressed to believe its the fault of the internet provider on this since this only happens while the game is running. Nothing was this bad before the newest release of i17.
I'm not blaming the game either. I understand and KNEW there would be problems because there always is when something is new and shining. This is just a bump in the road and I know eventually things will level out its just frustrating is all.
EDIT: After going through and setting Ventrillo to 'realtime' priority via the task manager it seems to have at least fixed the ventrillo problem YAY!

I'm having a memory leak occur when I run the game. The rate of memory increase speeds up when I'm playing the game, of course, but I could be sitting on the log in screen doing nothing and the memory usage steadily increases until the client crashes and gives me the old Memory Leak report from the game Beta and asks me to report it.
My Specs:
AMD Phenom II X6 Processor
3.25 GB of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5750 running Catalyst version 10.4
Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Ultramode On, settings high
Observed Issue, and Hard Data:
1. Start Game/Load Login Screen/Begin Stopwatch/Do nothing else

2. Displaying Login Screen 1 min.

3. Displaying Login Screen 2 min.

4. Displaying Login Screen 5 min.

Anyway, when it crashes it gives this error:
ERROR: swDumpStackToBuffer - timeout (258) waiting for dumpHeap is NOT corrupted
Last windows SYSTEM error: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
On my laptop I seem to be having the same memory-leak issues. Im running Vista not XP.
My memory-leak is actually raising to over 3 gigs before it crashes and asks me to send my crash report in. (I have 4gigs ram) Happens approximately 30mins playtime.
I have reinstalled, Updated drivers, closed all other programs, ext..., ext...
Also, Only happened to start after the release of i17. I have been scouring the inter-webs in hopes of a fix... To no avail. So I humbly ask for assistance.
Could i17 really have a memory-leak of some sort? If not, why cant any of us "memory-leakers" find something In common with each other over this WIDESPREAD problem?
Friend of mine linked me to this thread and figured I'd chime in. I'm currently in the middle of a back-and-forth with NCSoft support trying to deal with a similar RAM issue. If I run the game on "Recommended" or higher the game crashes after 45-60 minutes (depending on graphics settings) with a Windows error message due to the game hitting it what Windows considers the cap on a single programs memory usage (1.8-1.9GBs in my case). And like everyone else in this thread I'm using an ATI graphics card (HD5750 1GB GDDR5). I do have the most recent Catalyst 10.4 drivers installed (from May 3rd).
EDIT: Other current system stats are Win XP Home 32bit SP3, 4GB RAM (3070MBs recognized) and an Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93GHz.
Seriously? No red names even have a "we're looking into this" rubber-stamp response for us?
