Here's a better idea.

Copy the characters to Test and help test the fix.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Just thought I'd bump this thread and leave my comment that I'm having the same problem as the OP with plain shield patterns becoming black and not applying at all at the tailor.

Unfortunately, that appears to only to be only a fix for the cause, not the effects.
