Add an option to disable the level up explosion

Not everyone has a decent computer or internet, and the level-up explosion can add a lot to process on top of everything else. Not to mention, it would be a nice option to have so people can avoid being blinded in the middle of combat. It can be hard to tell what's going on with a huge burst of light in addition to the dozens of other power graphics going all at once.

Also, the SOUND. It drowns out a lot of other sound effects, and I doubt I'm the only one who occasionally has looping sound - This wouldn't fix that but it would make it one less sound we can have loop.

It should be simple to do, add an option like "Suppress Level Up Graphics" and have it default to "No"

I wouldn't mind this. It would help RP situations "Did you just explode light?"

Would you mind quantify that post?

Huh. They actually change over time? That's neat. I don't see why anyone would ever want to get rid of that graphics effect.

Not that I'm against the suggestion. It's a good suggestion, if the devs wanted to spend some time with it, I don't see the problem.

However, in my experience most RPers ignore the effect of "bursting into light" keeping it just another game mechanic.

Like how alot of RPers don't automatically assume the glow on regen was always there, before you could turn it off.

Some things just require a visual cue for the player, whether they'd actually be there or not.

Well, yes. I don't think I've been on any teams that last more than a couple missions, except if everyone is level 50, where there aren't multiple level-ups. It can be quite irritating, say in the middle of a big fight when the guy who dings is right in your face and you've got fireballs and grenades and ice storms and what have you parading all around you.

I'm certainly not saying it annoys everyone, or that it's always annoying...but it sure can be. And honestly, as poor as my computer is, I'm certain there are players with worse computers (I had a guy ask me to not bubble him because it made his computer run slower. What the heck would a level-pacted ding in his face do?!). So, for those people especially, I imagine this would be a very welcome option.

..simply no.

the explosion is one of the things tht make lvling fun..having the chance to get rid of it makes lvling a lvl...well...boring and not really omg yay.
even if it is an option the knowledge of it there is somewhat...a downer in my view

...I guess Ultra Mode shouldn't be optional either then, huh? Since the fact that I won't be running it might make some one else disappointed!

Thats a really bloody attrocious reason. Frankly.

Not everyone can afford a great rig. I shelled out when I hit Uni because I was dog-tired of running the game on minimum settings because, if I ran it on anything else on my laptop it crashed.

/Signed. People should be able to have a choice, and being able to turn off/dim things that can potentially hamper their fun (when reasonable) get my sig.

Until CoH becomes a "right" I'll never buy this argument. That said, I'd support the option. It'd be nice to not have the sparkelies early on for anyone.

...What?
Sorry, that actaully doesn't compute? How is it impossible that someone can afford to play City Of on a month to month basis, but doesnt have the cash to sink into a new rig?

Im a student. Before hand, I was still at home, running City Of on my old laptop. It ran fairly well...on minimum settings. First thing I did when I got to Uni was to take some of the money I had saved and invest in a new desktop rig. I could afford to do so, so I did. I know of a friend or two, however, who simply cannot afford new rigs/gfx cards and the like. PS has long held onto helping out those with lower end rigs, hence not making Ultra Mode mandatory. This is just another example of that.

Can't you turn particles all the way off for a less lag-inducing effect?

Oh, and Crimson demands you play this arc-> Twisted Knives (MA Arc #397769)

I suppose, but that would make everything else look less impressive, as well.

There's a touch of irony to all this then, isn't there? I mean you've all but said that your computer is so low-end that a 3 second animation is noticeably detrimental to your play experience, yet you're not willing to turn down your graphics options and instead want the devs to implement resources into making it disableable?

Hmm... A thought occurs to me. How close is the camera to your character when you play? Max distance? Half way? First-person? Because I've noticed that just about ANY power effect, when it's right in one's face, will slow down your FPS. On the flip side, if your camera is at max distance, then your computer is being made to render a LOT of stuff that it shouldn't need to. So along that vein, try mucking with your camera distance. Setting it to about halfway will make sure that none of your power effects are taking up the whole screen, while at the same time your graphics card doesn't have to show everything everyone is doing.

I guess overall, an option to disable the level up effects wouldn't be harmful to anyone else, but I'm just wondering if there isn't more you can do on your end to alleviate your gaming issues.

Your solution to any one who has a problem with the level-up graphics is "make everything else look worse." Mine is "Remove the problem by letting them disable it"

Can you explain how my solution isn't better...? It lets people avoid the boom of light with out having to change other stuff. That's all there is to it.
