blaster powers: broadsword and katana
Ok Im sure this has been mentioned several times already but I know a lot of players want it and Im not quite sure why they havent already made a blaster version yet of swords.
Going by Warwitchs post as to how she said powersets get picked up I decided to answer her questions... 1. Little asset from art needed since there already in game, only power that would probably need changing is parry. 2. Not really a gaping hole but it is something a lot of people have been asking for, for a very long time, the fact it isnt already there is a bit of a hole. 3. It is already in the game anyway, it just needs moving over and reworking with numbers slightly but if you need a signature charecter that uses it, Spark Blade does even though hes not in game yet. 4. Players have been asking for gun/sword charecters forever, by putting swords on blasters you are letting them do that by picking either dual pistols or assault rifle as a primary power. Although a lot of players wouldnt see this as a major addition, I know a lot of players would use it simply because of the theme, so many heroes use swords and guns together, CoX you cant unless you buy the temp power revolver. |
not to mention, imagine the redraw issues...
I hate to rain on parades here... but I believe it's been made quite clear by the developers that they view the melee heavy Energy Manipulation as an aberration in the Blaster Secondaries, and that any future blaster secondaries will be more similar to Psionic Manipulation with less melee attacks and more blasting / status type effects to better fit the whole MANIPULATION aspect.
While the developers have not explicitly eliminated sword type weapons from coming to Blaster Secondary sets, the case is similar to Whips going outside of Masterminds. The developers won't say never... but it's pretty far down the list.
No.
And Broadsword and Katana would fit the underlying theme of blaster secondaries HOW exactly?
Since you mentioned that the only power that would need changing is Parry, I can only assume you just want a straight port of the sets.
What about some kind of mitigation? Control? Anything aside from more attacks? No mention made of that at all. Dual Pistols/Broadsword (aside from spawning so many Dante wannabes it's not evenfunny) would be so slot hungry you'd have to either gimp half your attacks or skip them entirely. Add in the fact that you would get zero added survivability and you have a recipe for disaster.
And that's not even mentioning the fact that a sword is not the first thing that springs to mind when I think "blaster", and I'd imagine a lot of other people are the same.
So, no, bad idea.

Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

What aside from Serge tearing out his hair because everyone is buying red trenchcoats in lieu of any of the hundreds of other accesories he stocks?

By the way, re-reading the title gave me an interesting idea. If we are to have a Broadsword set for Blasters, then perhaps we should have a gun that shoots swords? It'd be like that old Gauntlet game I was too young to play

No. Not even as a joke.

It would still be possible to get some damage mitigation from primarys if you wanted anyway, yes its going to be harder to use than other blasters sets, but its also going to be more rewarding.
Just because you imagine people making dante clones thats not enough reason to ban a set, you could say that about so many other sets like dual pistols for instance ss/inv spawning superman clones. Its going to happen with any set that takes a hero/villains powers either way.
As for gimping slots... well scrappers manage it fine and they have all there secondary pools to slot as well :P skipping attacks is common with any set, there arent many people i know that take any powers in energy manipulation other that build up, conserve power, boost range and total focus, yet its one of, if not the most popular blaster secondary.
With headsplitter and disembowel in there im pretty sure plenty of players would play it just for having two high powered attacks instead of the one regardless of mitigation, however if you dont like it, dont play it simple as.

It would just make sense to use an idea already in game, already with animations there set up and just rework it to fit the manipulation set.
We get these so often it feels like we should put a sticky about them.

I dont understand why people are so against it on the boards, since the amount of players who actually want a gun/sword charecter in game is staggering. People seem much more likely to say the idea is bad because they cant see how it would be reworked, Im not saying its set in stone that it HAS to be a carbon copy of scrappers version, but it could use a lot of the animations it has and rename the powers and effects.
Plus it would give the devs a way to bring spark blade in lol.
I did realise they come up often, but not often about getting it as a blaster secondary thats why i mentioned it.

The reason you'll see plenty of people disagree with the idea adding Broadsword as a Blaster secondary, especially described as loosely as you have it, is that Blaster secondaries are not melee. They were at some point in Beta, but they are not now. They have melee attacks in them, but even the arguably most melee-heavy ones like Electric and Energy, still give you a few melee attacks early on and then focus on support. An intrinsically weapon secondary just CAN'T look right with a primarily support power selection. We're not talking about ONE support power instead of Parry. We're talking about at least four or five support powers - the bulk of the powerset. And unless you want to devise a Trick Sword powerset, that's really not feasible.
Personally, one of the ATs I REALLY want to see added to the game extra (hopefully with Going Rogue, even though that's unlikely) is some kind of melee/range FIGHTER combo. Dominators come kind of close, but they are decidedly NOT fighters. They may not be quite all the way support, but they're squishies nonetheless. There needs to be an AT hat allows me to pair melee weapons with ranged weapons. I just don't think Blaster is the right place to look for it.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

I think the suggestion is ok. Probably not copying power sets directly from scrappers as it is, but modifying them such that they are more in line with the design of existing blaster's secondary sets. Actually, you did say the same thing in your subsequent posts.

II suggested a Blaster/ Corrupter primary set you might like, if this is what you want. I created it myself, the damage/ recharge and range aspects as well.

If the enemy of my enemy is my friend, is the friend of my friend my enemy?
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

The powersets are determined by a few factors:
- This is low-hanging fruit, with little assets from Art
- This new powerset can fill that gaping hole, it’s been a long time coming
- This is the powerset of X signature character, so it just makes sense to put it in the game
- This is something players have been asking for forever and now we have time to “do it right.”
As for your example, the difference in complexity between a simple thug and a demon (when you see it, you’ll understand why) are vastly different and since thugs were “mostly built” anyway, they were a logical choice because they existed on a rig we currently used and didn’t have any strange technical issues with. Now Demons…whole other story.2.
