Purple sets and the Law of 5's

According to Mid's Hero builder, I can only stack 5 of the same purple set bonuses. For example, I can actually slot all 10 purple sets into my plant/trick arrow troller (if I chose to do it), but the recharge bonus maxes out at 50% (10% each from 9 purple sets that give the bonus.) So instead of showing 90% recharge bonus, it only shows 50% bonus.

Are the purple sets also subject to this law of 5's?

All set bonuses follow the rule of fives regardless of whether the bonuses come from uncommon, rare or ultra-rare sets.

The name of the set bonus is what determines whether it counts against the limit of five of any set bonus. There are a few cases where the value is the same but the name of the set bonus is different.

Yeah just as Schismatrix said ... all set bonus follow that rule -- with the exception of the unique ones such as the steadfast +3% def - only one of those can be put on a given character's build.

Example of the one that most commonly tricks people:

I have 5 LotG 7.5% sloted, but I also have a bas. gaze set sloted for more 7.5%. The LotG's bonus is seperate from those that are in sets such as sting of the manti., kinetic crash, and bas. gaze.

PVPIO bonuses that are marked PVP-only do NOT stack with 5x of the same PVE bonus, as well.

What I have been wondering is...

Do bonuses that have the same name also always have the same value?

Combat Attributes window.

Feature - Combat Attribute Window

  • This window displays all the character’s current attributes.
  • It can be accessed by clicking on the “Powers” text on the Powers Icon Tray.
  • Players may also access the Combat Attribute window with the following command : “/toggle combatnumbers”
  • Below each attribute is a list of all powers affecting the attribute and the power's contribution.
  • There should be tooltips for every attribute thoroughly explaining them.
  • Each attribute can be sent to the Attribute Monitor window (via right-click context menu)
  • Masterminds can right-click their pet and view their pet’s attributes.

Attribute Monitor

The Attribute Monitor window is a minimalist window designed to be unobtrusively left up at all times.
  • Up to 10 attributes can be monitored.
  • You can drag the window to any part of the user interface.
  • You can right-click on elements to re-order or remove them.
  • If there is a monitored attribute, the window will stay open. If all attributes are removed, it will close
  • If you right-click the buff icons by the health bar the context menu should list everything it’s actually doing.

TECHNICALLY the rule isn't "same name" and TECHNICALLY two bonuses with the same name could have different values, but in-game this isn't true of any existing set.

Set bonuses are powers, which are set up so that you can't have more than 5 of the same one. The name of the power is independent of the bonus it gives (easily seen with LotG's +7.5% rech, and the Huge Recharge Bonus +7.5% rech), so two set bonuses could theoretically be given the same name but different effects. In practice, this does not happen.

It would be slightly more complicated, but two different set bonuses could be set up so that a combination of the two that sums up to 5 total would be the restriction, not 5 of each. In practice, this doesn't happen.

Similarly, TECHNICALLY you could have a set bonus which you're restricted to 1 copy of, or a set bonus that allows you to have 20 copies of. In practice, this doesn't happen.

This difference between what the powers system can do and what the powers system does do is so that players can understand what's going on without checking an entire database of information. For a similar reason, Hold enhancements always increase the duration of the hold. But there's nothing stopping the powers system from making Hold enhancements increase magnitude, instead.
