CAN NOT get COH moved to new Win 7 machine!

Yes I've read all the guides on how to copy the game over from my other hard drive. I always end up with it downloading Piggs for a half an hour before I give up and quit.

I copied the contents over to C:\program files\games\COH
I copied the cohupdater.exe over to desktop
I ran the updater and directed the game to install to C:\program files\games\COH
Thats when it downloads forever and never stops. It has a low file size to download and a short time, but when it gets to the Pigg files, it goes past the target file size and the time left goes to 123432423421234123:45:54 or something similar.
I can't figure out what is going on??

You might want to Download the game updater directly from the website. Or if you have a Disk install it directly.

I have no idea why you can't transfer it to the new system but that's the two work around I thought of right away.

I'm at my wits end here, I got this to work on an external HD plugged into a laptop using Vista before, now I'm doing the same thing and no go on Win 7. I can't figure out why it doesn't see the Pigg files...

At this point I'll try anything. Any reason that would make a difference loading the game in those program files instead?

Get the same issue with the other program files as before. Looking at least an hour download for pigg files. I see the files in the COH folder, why doesn't the updater?

If it matters, its Win 7 Pro 64 bit
4 gig DDR3 men
Radeon 5770 HD Vid card
AMD Athlon II X4 635 processor

Try it this way instead..

Run the installer and point it to install in it's default location. Once the download begins, stop the Updater and then copy the contents of your piggs folder into the one it just created. When you re-run the Updater, it should see the files there and run normally.

Here's how I move my CoH installation to a new PC:

1) Copy the entire CoH directory to the new system and rename it as "CoH_copy" or something of the like.
2) Run CoHUpdater.exe out of the CoH_copy directory.
3) Give it an install location (default C:\Program Files\City of Heroes). This adds the necessary CoH information to your computer's registry.
4) When it starts to download, hit cancel.
5) Delete the "City of Heroes" directory that it was installing to.
6) Move your CoH_copy directory to that same location and rename it "City of Heroes" and you should be good to go.

That's how I moved the game from my Win XP installation to Win 7 64-bit.

So basically I get it to prompt me for install and don't direct it elsewhere, just say yes. When it tries to start downloading everything, stop it. Should I then copy all folders and the large update file over?
Then re-run that same first updater and ignore the City of Heroes icon that was created when I ran the updater?

Because CoH is a 32-bit app, and the (x86) instruction set is 32-bit. Yeah, it's rather ****** up that x86 is 32-bit, while x64 is 64-bit. That's computers for you.

Anyway, I just got a new compy with Win7 about 3-4 weeks ago. Here's how I did it:

First, I inserted the Architecht Edition DVD into my DVD-Drive, and let it install the game.

Once it was all done, I opened up C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes on my new HDD, and C:\Program Files\City of Heroes on my old HDD, each in a seperate explorer. Tip: Click on the the Windows Explorer folder icon in your taskbar, and navigate to the new HDD's directory. Then, middle click on it in the task bar to open a second isntance of it, and navigate to the old HDD's directory.

On my old HDD, I pressed CTRL+A to select everything, then CTRL+C. Then I used ALT+Tab to switch to the new HDD, and used CTRL+V to paste, telling it to overwrite when prompted.

After that, I was all done, and ready to go.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the suggestions! Ill be off work in about 6 hours and I'll update with results.
I think I might still have a copy of city of villains on DVD I can try and use if the other suggestion doesn't work for me.

Also, try running CoH as Admin. Maybe its just a rights issue.

Can anyone post a screen shot of their City of Heroes folder contents to I can make sure nothing is messed up on the one I'm copying from?

First, Copy the contents of City of Heroes to: c:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes. Then dig into that directory and throw out the Coh.checksum.

After that, find cohupdater.exe in that directory and drag it to the desktop. Double click it, and wait for it to do a quick verify. After it's done, throw out the extra files it created on the desktop.

The next time you run CoH, it'll work fine.

There used to be a knowledge base article about this at help.ncsoft.com but I can't find it at the moment.

When you say drag, is that move or copy? Win 7 moves the file unless I hold Ctrl then it copies.
That's basically what I tried after it does the checksum it starts with the hour plus download.

Here's a video of it working, maybe my issue is copying before running the updater.

Drag to move it. The updater will download a new updater and put it where it's supposed to be. It has to be that way to get around Vista and Windows 7's access limits.

No go on anything.

Right now I'm letting it download the 524M pigg files because I'm tried of trying.

I tried putting the updater of my COH file on the desktop, running it, letting it create the c:/program files (x86)/city of heroes then stopping the download, copying my files from COH to City of Heroes and running the Coh icon on the desktop after deleting the checksum and it does the same thing.

I tried running the updater and letting it create the folder, then deleting the folder. I then renamed my folder with the files as City of Heroes and running the icon and it tries to download the files again.

What kills me is that I watch the names of the files its downloading and they're all in the c:/program files (x86)/City of Heroes/piggs folder.

Here's what I did when I moved CHV to my new Win7 rig:

1: Ignore the Program Files directory completely.
2: Copy old install directory from backup drive to d:\games\coh (c:\games\coh would work as well)
3: Copy cohupdater.exe from the install directory to the desktop. Do NOT create a shortcut to it.
4: Run cohupdater.exe
5: Don't let it install to where it wants to. Change directory to <drive>:\games\coh
6: When the "Next" button appears (came up in seconds since everything was already updated) close the screen. Do not hit Next.
7: Delete the copy of cohupdater.exe I made. Delete the log files that were generated by the updater. Leave only the shortcut to cohupdater.exe created by the updater.
8: Play game.

Be well, people of CoH.

I got it working! I basically did what you all said, but I let it just download the 524M of pigg files it wanted. It took about 30 minutes, but oh well it works now.
I appreciate all the help, wish it was faster but as long as its working thats all that matters!

By any chance, was the copy you were using made before the recent patch we had? Maybe you just weren't updated to the current version to begin with.

I watched it show pigg files it was downloading. I already was playing with dual pistols before I quit using the laptop and got the new computer. I didn't have this problem with the laptop using my external HDD on it. I'm really still not sure why it didn't work right.

Hmm. Then I'm at a loss too. Well you got it running and that's the important part. Hopefully it wont be so much trouble if you have to do it another time.

Bill I got a new computer and followed your instructions as I had before successfully. I then forgot to install Test. Then came the closed beta for Dual Pistols and I decided to copy an install for Test. This is where I hit some issues. First off it was when test was having weird updater issues. I eventually managed to get through doing the installation on this Windows 7 machine but it never created a new shortcut to cohupdater.exe.

So I now have a desktop with the all the log files and the copy of the .exe and a shortcut that says CohUpdater - Shortcut. But when I remove everything but that shrotcut from the desktop I cannot tun it since it's in the trash. So I've left it all on my desktop and can connect to the test server that way. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks
