Redside Heroics
My Night Widow has been an undercover Longbow Agent from day one. She has her second costume set up for her other uniform, and I love sorta RPing her in my head. I tend to play her as a hero who does what she has to to stop the greater evil. But she definitely sees herself as the hero who lurks the Etoile Isles at night, protecting its citizens. The work that she's had to do for Arachnos to keep her cover has toyed with her morals a little, and she's discovering that she's actually quite the powerful woman.
She's going to be my poster child for Going Rogue. I'm going to take her over to be a hero, so she can live out her original role as a Longbow Agent. But then I'm going to play missions as she would, and let her morality compass drive itself. I'm expecting her to dip quite far into 'vigilante', until some would say that she'd become a villain. But there'll always be a little light to her.

I tend to RP the various mayhem missions as insurance scams.
You could RP the mayhems into anti-villain objectives. You're going to rob a bank, but you're only going after safe deposit boxes known to be owned by criminals. The objects you break along the way (which is fun!) are marked with a certain criminal organization's emblem; you could ignore certain objects, like the trash bins, cars*, parking meters** , etc. Btw, when Prohibition started in the USA you can see newsreel footage of lawmen breaking containers holding alcoholic beverages so it's not without a real life precedent.
* or destroy only certain cars, or cars of a certain color, or trucks on any one particular mayhem as those belong to some criminal element. ** unless there's a criminal organization who gets the proceeds from parking meters, but then you MUST destroy every single one. That could be the true objective of a mayhem mission, the bank robbery is just a cover. I have fought Longbow with my "heroic" villains, but it's a staged attack that I've secretly set up with Longbow beforehand; my attacks are not as lethal as they may appear, the LB agents are secretly better armored against my attacks (they take damage, but it's more superficial), and LB treat it as a training exercise as well. You do have to fool your contacts once in awhile, as well as Arachnos. |
sounds odd, Right? But yeah. The Mayhem missions tend to be an insurance scam run by Mob banks and Cage Consortium credit unions in which a "Villain" is brought on by someone distantly related to the organization to rob the bank. The villain keeps any money they get away with, the Mob empties the rest of the vault and claims the villain got it all. The money is insured so it gets replaced.
So my Redside Heroes tend to race to the bank, beating up "Hired Security" and Cage guards to get there. Once inside, I'm forced to Out of Character break down the vault's door in order to spawn the "Villain" who comes in with an armed guard of mercenaries (Longbow) and is summarily defeated by my hero and/or team of heroes. If the Hero spawned at a specific time and the vault didn't -need- to be broken into/money stolen I'd skip the breaking of the vault. But I do it out of character so it really has no effect on the story one way or the other.

Actually, after thinking about my above post, this could be a way to have "mayhems" on heroside: a new mission objective: break certain things, but NOT everything (you fail if you break too many).
