3D support and COH

Just got a laptop that supports 3D, however in order to play a game in 3d, you have to launch it through a separate app. The COH updater causes some problem with this, and i havent been able to find a work around, was hoping someone could shed some light.

Thanks

I'm confused. Personally I haven't played/tested anything to do with the new 3D stuff, but....does it not require you to use it with software designed for the 3D devices? For instance, CoH wasn't coded/designed with 3D...should this actually work?

Sorry I don't mean to thread-jack. I'm just curious.

No. It can convert images/games/videos to 3d with surprisingly good results. Naturally it is not as good quality as things that were made to be viewed in 3d, but i was watching BBC Planet Earth Dvd last night and it was awesome. I was also able to view some photos of mine with really good results. Its not perfect, since whatever you are running has to be converted into 3d, so Eve Online for example, could run in 3d, but was a little glitchy out of the box. I havent toyed around with all the settings to fully understand if its a casualty of the conversion process, or if its just a matter of finding the right settings.

But in short, no, you are not limited to things designed to viewed in 3d

Well that's interesting

Thanks for explaining. Seems kind of cool although sounds like it's not quite ready for "anything" so to speak. If you do get it to work, I'd love for you to post about how well/horrible it works Good luck!

You can bypass the updater by running the "CityOfHeroes.exe" program directly with the "-project coh" command-line parameter. Keep in mind that you'll still need to run the updater every time there's an update.

This is worth a shot. It might not have a problem with the client itself.

More specifically, an example of the command line in it's default directory:
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh

It is more than ready, just got done playing eve after i tweaked the 3d settings a bit and it was awesome. The only drawback is wearing those damned glasses for hours at a time lol,

I was able to get COH to launch using the comand prompt, but still no go on getting it to convert to 3d, will keep playing with it though,

Out of curiosity, what 3d system is it using? I know that the nVidia 3D Vision technology we were shown at HeroCon does not work with CoH, through nVidia's own admissions. I don't remember for certain, but I think it is a problem they are having with OpenGL which is the system CoH uses. They (nVidia) said they are working on getting those problems resolved, but don't have an estimate on when it will work.

If it is the nVidia 3D Vision system, their website lists what games are supported in the 3d Vision environment.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

When Going Rogue was being shown off, nVidia had a booth near Paragon Studios. They said that GR would be compatible with nVidia's 3D tech.

I like how nVidia have implemented the technology. It renders two cameras offset from wherever the actual in-game camera viewpoint is, thereby giving you a stereo effect. This is based within the GeForce driver. But problems arise on some effects that weren't designed with a 3D perspective in mind. One major problem is that the HUD can appear hideously close to your face, and that the crosshair is completely illegible. Thankfully, the driver can replace the crosshair altogether with one that looks right.

Downsides are, your framerate takes a hit from having to render everything twice, you need nVidia 3D Vision shutter glasses, and a monitor that can do 120Hz images.

NVidia is trying to get it compatible with CoH and GR by the time GR comes out. Right now it only works with DirectX games. OpenGL has been a bit of a problem, but they want ot be able to have it work across the board.

It is a compatability issue, strangely, the 3d program, however, says its a problem with directx.

It's likely saying that it's a problem with DirectX because CoH doesn't use DirectX except for sound.

The user interface is DirectX, while the 3D world is OpenGL.

Really? Where did you get that info from?

Everything I've been told in the past by Devs is that it only used DirectX for audio.

I have to put this with your previous comment that GR would be compatible with the nVidia 3d Vision tech. What we've been told by those that know is that nVidia doesn't have this working with OpenGL yet, but they are trying to get it working in time for GR.

From what I've read of TriDef, it is designed for DirectX9 games. Here is a link to a page on their site about 3-D games.

Since CoH is an OpenGL game, that explains your problems with it.

Yea, the only openGL app that apparantly works with it is google earth, thanks much, i can now stop trying to make it work through sheer willpower heh
