New ATI card, now game unplayable

I upgraded my video card last week from my trusty nVidia 8600gt to an ATI 4670 and now when I log into the game it isn't playable anymore. The screen flashes and then will start pixelating. I can log in in safe mode, but it still has problems then. They just aren't as severe. I seem to only have this issue in COH, Star Trek Online runs flawlessly on max settings. I have always heard there are issues with ATI cards and this game, but i never thaught it was this bad. I read through the sticky thread at the top of this forum and tried some of the things in there, but since I can't get into the game and see anything I can't change any settings in game.

Has anybody else run into this? Changing back to the nVidia card isn't an option as it was causing random crashes. I am running Vista x64 Ultimate with 8gig of ram and I only run into this problem in CoH

The thread said Windows 7, but maybe it helps for your case as well.

The problem is with the 9.12 drivers with OpenGL games like CoH/V, there is a driver hotfix out from ATI. First link under "Recomendation" for Vista/Win 7 package.

Thanks for the help. I am downloading the hotfix now. Hopefully it will fix the problem, I would hate to not be able to play this game.

Edit: Downloaded and installed the hotfix and all is good now. I can actually set everything to max now

After installing the hotfix the game was playable, but not long after I started getting the random crashes again that I was getting with my nVidia card. I rolled back the hotfix and it stopped again. Perplexed now.

It's a good thing I am enjoying STO. I guess I will take a break from CoH till this gets fixed at a later date. I would rather have a stable computer then have all the random crashes.

Do you have all of the updates for Windows? I find it odd that people still have that crashing issue as it's been resolved for months now. Both the drivers for the video cards and Windows have patched things up. If you're having this crash issue I'm curious as to what might be causing it.

Would you mind posting a CoH Helper log? And maybe a HiJackThis log? I just want to see what's running. Something might stand out.

We'll see....

Ok, this will be a long post. I have CoH helper log, HiJackThis log and DxDiag log. you will notice I am not using the most recent ati driver, but the one installed is stable and the newer one caused crashing again like I was getting from my nVidia card before. Maybe someone will see something I have missed. I have been dealing with random crashes up till I put in the new ati card and then they came back when I applied the hotfix to fix to make CoH work.

First off, update to Service Pack 2. It has resolved many stability issues, and it has definitely helped with the video crash issues. You can get it through Windows Updates, or use the direct download link here for the Standalone installer.

Next, install all of the Critical Updates using Windows Updates. Sometimes you have to install some of these updates before you'll even see the Service Pack 2 update.

I'd also recommend lowering the Water Effects to None or Low and turning off Bloom as those are a known issue with the ATI cards and CoH at this time. Those issues are supposed to be resolved with Going Rogue and the concurrent issue release for those that don't purchase GR. I'd also turn off Depth of Field as well for now.

You may want to see if you can find updated sound drivers as well. It's surprising how seemingly unrelated systems like audio and video can affect each other.

I'll leave the HJT log to someone else and won't bother commenting on your screen resolution.

For future reference, DXDiag logs are pretty much useless to us as they give unneeded information and it's difficult to find the information we do need easily because of that. The CoH Helper log pulls all of the data that we need that would be in the DXDiag report.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

I downloaded sp2 last night after I noticed it wasn't installed, I'll have to see if that helps later today. I also did a complete reinstall last month after a hard drive failure and after that is when the random crashing started. I did update the bios on the motherboard at that time, so that may be related.

I hesitate to do a lot as the system is stable right now. I'll definitely get sp2 installed and see if I can install the ati hotfix again without losing stability.

Wow. I was pondering upgrading my aging nVidia 8600 with a Radeon 4980, but if ATI has so many issues with CoX, I may not...

Just wanted to update my progress. I finally found the problem. I did a bios update back in December to increase the amount of memory the board would handle to 16gig and when I rolled that back to the previous bios version everything now runs stable. I was able to install the ati hotfix and play the game again.

I do like the look of the new ati card now. I am able to run the game at higher settings than I did with the old 8600gt. Don't let the problems I had discourage you form upgrading.
