But the interesting part is how immortality affects him. Jack is an interesting character.

Villains : AtomBomb (50 Rad/Kin corruptor), Aleks (50 SS/Inv brute), StoneLethal (50 EM/Stone brute), Davroz (50 Bots/Dark mastermind)

Neh... I don't find him interesting. Largely because the way his immortality seems to affect him is.. it.. doesn't? He gets a little mopey sometimes, but then it's right back to cheap nods and winks to the fact that he's pansexual and that doesn't get old really fast at all!

I disagree I find him very interesting in that the winking and sexuality is a cover for the pain he has and the knowloedge that if he lets anyone get too close he's going to lose them eventually.

Indeed.

So until then, he's immortal. Any danger he gets into at all will have no suspense involved in it.

I kind of like him. He and the Doctor make an interesting contrast.

And he can fail. You just have to seal him up in something he can't get out of by himself. Like a grave. Or a concrete block. (Those must have sucked. Revive. Suffocate. Revive. Suffocate. Revive. Suffocate. Repeat until rescued (and for all you know, for eternity). Eww.)

The "he's immortal so there's no suspense" could also be said of the Doctor. It's his show, of course he's not gonna die. Well, not most of the time, anyway. And when he does, we know about it months beforehand because of all the "who'll be the new Doctor" hoopla that inevitably surrounds the whole thing.

So we know he's not gonna die. But we still watch and like him because of the stuff he does, his personality, and to see if he succeeds at whatever plan to save the day he's concocted, which is where the real tension comes in. Sometimes he succeeds, and sometimes he doesn't.

So with Jack, of course he's not going to die. Even if he wasn't completely immortal, we still would know he's not going to die. Torchwood is his show. But what's interesting is how he acts, how he deals with the problems with which he's presented.

Those three ladies are great!

I am torn on Capn Jack. Immortality does make for a tension buster as does Who lore which makes him the Face of Bo waaay in the future but I still find it a fascinating opportunity for writers to explore an everyday person given the gift/curse of living forever which while Dr. Who is in the sameboat, somehow never really addresses it. I think the only one that did was the episode where the aliens wanted to steal his regenerations so they could finally die.

One could see the writers putting forth the idea that humans are human because we die. We get to shine very brightly, make a huge stir, and then fade out leaving little but a memory. Someone who lives forever has to be much more careful because a random word in anger or misunderstanding can haunt you or even existence for a long time to come.

So Jack is no longer a human, should he be running an organization to keep humanity safe from outer space threats?

It seems like he is trying to hold on to his humanity but for how long? And when does he become like Dr. Manhatten? No longer in touch with the folks that are like him?

In fact, frankly, I won't be too sorry to see Davis go. It means Jack "Most boring character ever" Harkness probably won't be coming back.
Considering that he showed up in episodes written by Moffat, I wouldn't bet heavily on that.

Puppeh! I don't think you are suppossed to QFT your own post. It breaks an internet law or something.

They internets are very strict on that kind of thing, VERY strict!

I think New guy is officially suppossed to be Number 11 as the others aren't suppossed to count. :P

Thanks though, I'd love to be on Dr. Who! I'd just be a companion who would most likely get eating by something nasty at one point.

Er.. others? I may be being very dense here, but haven't there only been 11 in-canon Doctors now, including Smith?

William Hartnell,
Patrick Troughton,
Jon Pertwee,
Tom Baker,
Peter Davidson,
Colin Baker,
Sylvester McCoy,
Paul McGann,
Christopher Eccleston,
David Tennant,
Matt Smith.

One of the Doctors was played by two actors, but in the story line this one is indeed the 11th.

Heroes : Angrem (50 Stone tank), Exo Inferis (50 Fire blaster), Exo Proteus (50 ill/emp), IceVengance (50 cold defender)
Villains : AtomBomb (50 Rad/Kin corruptor), Aleks (50 SS/Inv brute), StoneLethal (50 EM/Stone brute), Davroz (50 Bots/Dark mastermind)

That would be my list too Elysienne btu I thought there was some controversy about the doctors.

Could be wrong or I could be getting it confused with future events to which I am privvy too....

Ah Dr Who on Wikipedia mentions lots of other actors who have played Dr. Who.

Maybe thats it.

The interesting thing about Immortal Jack is not really his sexuality, or the myriad interesting ways he gets killed.

His immortality, and the effects of it have given him a much different view of time and priorities than "normal" people would have.

Where most people don't consider much beyond the current moment "We have to save *INSERT NAME*!", Jack now takes a much longer view of things. "Well, if *INSERT NAME* is allowed to die, I can actually stop something worse from happening to even more people."

This more alien contrast between expediencies is what makes him interesting. He's, on some levels, like the Doctor. But his moral code is much less rigid, allowing him to act in ways that are both heroic and monstrous.

Ok, there was Peter Cushing in those old Movies who played the Doctor, but that was the 1st incarnation.

In the Official timeline there was a secodn actor who played HArtnell's original Doctor for the Davidson episode, "The Five Doctors" Because Hartnel was already dead.

There was the rowan atkinson Doctor who spoof but that is not part of actual continutity.

In real Continutity Smith is the 11th Doctor. Now the question comes in when Smith leaves who will play the Vallyard since he was revealed to be the Doctor in between is 11th and 12th regeneration.

I'd love to play the Vallyard... that way they can say that "Doctor Who has gone to the Americans"... at least for a littler bit :P

Probably my favorite line from End of Time Part 2:

Ood Sigma: The Universe will sing you to your sleep.

It will be interesting to see how Moffat handles being the showrunner; that is much more on his plate than just being a writer. I hope he picked up a lot from Davies to help ease him into it, but right now he basically has jumped into the lion's den; we'll need to see if he can survive.

I am waiting to reserve judgment on Smith for at least half a season; it took Tennant that long to start to find his niche in the role.

Ashes to ashes,
Pheonyx

Wasn't the Valyard erased from the timeline at the end of Trial of a Timelord? I thought the whole scheme was to allow the Valyard to remain in existence by stealing the Doctor's regenerations. He was, if you like, a potential future for the Doctor's existence to go down. And if he'd been successful, then that possible future would become the dominant future, with the Doctor as he was becoming a divergent timeline.

That's how I understood it, anyway. I could be wrong.
