~*~I Must KNOW~*~
I'd have to say I make female characters about 75% of the time, mostly for concept reasons. I won't lie and say I don't appreciate the cheesecake factor, but that is never why I choose to make a certain character female.
And yes, the walk emote for the ladies is mezmerizing.

I have a few female characters, but I rarely play them. Concept for me comes first, and being on Virtue, I indulge in RP here and there and found that it's easier to RP guys. I'm just more comfortable in the role of a guy and I don't role-play women very well. It's a lack of creativity or fear of accusations of homosexuality that leads me to play one gender vs. another. It is, in fact, possible to make a compelling concept that isn't female. I chose to go with what I have the most fun with.
And for the past few years, I've been working in offices with ratios of 3:1 women to men...this past year I've been moved to a space I share with five other women (with myself as the lone guy). Quite frankly after spending 50-60 hours a week working under those conditions, I rather not log into a game and play a woman character. I could use some "guy" time.

But that's not entirely true. I build the female toons for theme first. Does it fit the character concept I want to try, with the powersets and costume idea(s) I have? That's the critical determinant.
But, yes, using the "walk" emote with one of my toons can put steam in a man's stride.

I took a quick look at my handi-dandi Excel spreadsheet of all my characters and I come up with - 94 male and 49 female in my stable.

In CoH I probably have a 60% male / 40% female ratio,
- my main character in EQ was a female ranger (the graphics looked much better than males),
- in DaoC it was a male dwarf healer,
- in WoW a female troll shaman (didn't like the crouching of the males and they were the sexiest Horde toons at the time),
- huge male scrapper spines/da in CoH,
- huge male dom thorn/plant in CoV (seemed appropriate for a nemesis)
- beast like male psychic scrapper type in CO
but yeah I have spent over 200 days watching 2 female characters (EQ and WoW) ... and no ... I don't secretly wish I had breasts ... well you know ... if I did I ... well ... I mean ... I ... I ... I mean I don't see them as me.
Edit had to go back and count for my 20+ chars (M/F/H) I have 10/8/8 and for all those I had on hand 30/28/20 which means I probably love Huge toons more than most and that 31% or 36% of my toons are females

Exactly. I'm making a character. I'm not making a me.
Damn it, you're making my bust too big!
Maybe I'll just make it anyway and claim I never saw this post.
In my case I play about two girls for every guy in CoX. I got into Pen & Paper RP a long time ago. Because of a lack of experienced players in my area at the time, I took up the job of running most of the games, which meant I became comfortable portraying male or female NPC's. That led to the occasional female PC. Later on I took up writing and continued to create male and female characters.
My favorite character concept happens to be a female, so I ended up making different versions of her. Then, because I was in an all-female SG I made a few more female alts. I still play men, but find I have more fun with the girls. And I'm perfectly fine with that.
Of course, there's probably a sexual fantasy component to it all, I'm sure. I'm not interested in analyzing it all that much. I'm more of a Jungian than a Freudian, so maybe I'm just trying to integrate my anima? If you understand what that means, then you've probably wasted your time getting a B.A. - I urge you to consider engineering or dentistry instead!

Of course, me not being attracted to females may be involved here... it's hard to know for sure.
