You shouldn't assume the servers were intentionally shut down on a weekend evening. Most likely there has been a failure. There seem to have been general stability problems the last few days, as Protector was down for a while previously.

While I agree communication would be nice, it sounds like you think they shut them down for maintenance or something. That's incredibly unlikely.

They(the devs) should make it a point to inform their gaming community when there's a major server issue like this. Those servers have been down more than 2 hrs now and it would be appropriate for them to bring us up to par on when they'll be back up.

You won't get advance warning when a server crashes, because nobody knows when a server is going to crash. That's like expecting Windows to say, "hey, dude, I'm going to blue screen in thirty minutes if that's okay with you."

Computers just crash, no advance notice.

More than likely, the people fixing the servers now are techies who have no rednames and no permission to post on the forums. You don't expect someone like Positron or Niviene to be woken up when the servers go down, do you? This is more stuff for Johnny the IT Guy.

Its all part of the new carbon caps and emissions strategy. 3 servers are shut down randomly each week to make sure Paragon Studios and NCSoft are carbon neutral.

Really?
When a few servers crash,
Here is what we already know:

  • Something went wrong and some servers are down
  • The devs didn't just flip an off switch on a whim.
  • To find out what happened, they will need to test.
  • To get them running they may have to fix some things.
  • Then they will have to test again.
  • Until they have tested, and fixed, and tested again ... They do not know how long it will take.
  • If testing again fails, they may have to go back to step 1,
  • They will get the servers up as soon as they possibly can.
  • Until they are finally sure they are ready to turn them back on, they will NOT have any useful, meaningful info they could give us.

Here is all that the devs would be able to tell us:

  • Something went wrong and some servers are down.
  • We didn't just flip an off switch on a whim.

  • Until we are finally sure we are ready to turn them back on, we will NOT have any useful, meaningful info we could report.
Of course, that is what we already know also.
Is there any real point in asking them to tell us what we already know?

Yes, If they find out that the fixing will take a really long time, and are sure of that, they will tell us.
Yes, I am frustrated too.
But when all they can tell us is what we already know, that would be pointless.

I bet if it takes more than a few days to bring the downed servers back online, they will extend the winter event by a week!

The fact that 3 servers are down makes me think they're locked (full) rather than down. Although there was a server queue before whe servers were full.

That is, I'm afraid, completely incorrect. Unfortunately, many people believe as you do. As a field tech with many, many years of experience I can tell you that is never pointless to communicate with your customers.

My standard policy, and the policy followed by all of our field techs as far as I know, is:
1. Let the customer know when you arrive on site. For our esteemed developers, this would simply be a post acknowledging the problem and letting us know they are working on it.
2. After looking at the problem, give an initial assessment. This doesn't have to be precise (and can't be unless you've already found the exact problem) but it gives the customer an idea of what to expect so they can plan their day accordingly.
3. If the problem takes more than a few minutes, give regular updates. Again, this may be nothing more than "we haven't found the problem yet," but it is necessary.

Basically, the rule is communicate, communicate, communicate! Communication is the key to any successful relationship, including technician to customer. This has been proven by scientific research and my own experience supports this conclusion. I have seen other technicians who believe as you do and they tend to have unhappy customers. Often I find out about them because their customer has come to me instead.
