when do we get to play with it anyway? Or can we right now?

I've been playing it for weeks. Didn't you get the invite?

lol. Just kidding. We have no clue. I'm sure there will be an annoucement when the time comes.

We've heard "early 2010." Even if that means January 1st, it's not January yet.

Beta begins when the Test servers are pulled from general usage to be used for Beta. That hasn't happened yet.

If you're in Beta, you'll get an email invite. Sometimes that invite goes missing even though you are in. If you are in Beta, you'll be able to log all the way into the test server once Beta has started. And you'll be able to see the extra 'hidden' forums for Beta Testers.

We don't know when Beta will start. Guaranteed not to start until January at the earliest.

They generally do invites in waves too, so if they beta starts and you don't have an invite, don't dispair.

Have we had confirmation that this will be done a la issue beta testing, and not a la City of Villains beta? If the later... the test server(s) will not be pulled.

As far as I could tell, it sounded like it was going to be a separate server until it got closer to release anyway.

Which would be a la CoV. But I've noticed a lot of people that it will be a la Issue betas, where it's the standard test install, blocking non-invites.

If I had to guess I would imagine that the GR closed beta will start around February 1st because that's right around the time Star Trek Online is going to go live. Think about it...

That presumes that STO will meet it's launch date...

and I seriously doubt they'll be able to do that.

SWEET! January is only 10 days away, here's hoping!

So just to clarify, those who have the badge will get an email?

I've never gone to the test server before, it's not on the server list. How would I go about getting on this thing?

Just as a caution - if the beta server is separate, then most likely the regular test server client will not work for it - if/when you get the email, read the instructions on how to get online carefully!.

It also seems like the sort of thing they'll explain and elaborate on here on the forums. It's not NDA material, and just knowing how to connect won't allow you to connect unless you're actually in the beta. So even if you don't get the email, there should be another explanation somewhere, when the time comes.

Yeah, but this one will probably involve having to sign an NDA in order to go on (like CoV), so...yeah, Make sure your PlayNC account's e-mail address is up to date if you're expecting a beta invite. That e-mail is important.

No "probably" about it, there is indeed an NDA associated with the GR closed beta. Attendees of Hero Con were required to sign it in order to be granted GR closed beta access.

So where from do they send the emails? I should add the address to my whitelist.

It's so cute that Beyaj thinks he's getting a first wave invite with an account regged in May 2009.

First wave of invites are going to be "friends and family." So if you aren't close to someone working for Paragon Studios and aren't someone like Arcanaville (hint: unless your name is Arcanaville, you're not), you're not getting invited here.

Second wave will probably be 60+ month veterans. It could be previous beta testers with a good track record, bumping vets down to the third wave. I expect wave two to go out one or two weeks (or 5-10 play sessions, if the test server isn't up 24/7) after the first wave.

Wave three will most likely be HeroCon attendees. Again, it's entirely possible that they'll get invited before the vets, but then I'll have to scream "devs hate east coasters!" since I live (you guessed it!) on the east coast. Regardless, tier 3 will probably hit another 1-2 weeks (5-10 play sessions) after the second wave.

Wave four will then probably be those who earned the badges for customer loyalty. It will probably hit 3-4 weeks (15-20 test sessions) after wave three.

Wave five will likely be anyone who gets a preorder code for Going Rogue. They'll likely only get 1-2 weeks in the closed beta before it becomes open beta and they let anyone with an active CoH account play. Open beta will likely last three weeks to a month.

This is of course based off of my previous experience with tiered beta invites. It could be completely wrong... wait, no it couldn't, the first wave is definitely correct. A lot has to do with how much the testers are actually accomplishing, how much control they want to exercise over the testers (some people won't like that "test x" means that y, z and q aren't available and will simply give up on testing at all), and of course how bad marketting wants to pump up the hype for those who aren't in the test yet.

Also, you absolutely need to know: beta tests are just that--tests of incomplete products. Yes, it's cool to say you got to see all the shiny new features before anyone else, but it also means putting up with ridiculous amounts of lag, crashing, bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs, and sometimes even bugs.

I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that it'll go much smoother than those for the other super hero MMO this past summer, but it's still going to be a work in progress right up until it's officially released (and then in all likelihood, another few weeks beyond).

Bea never said 'first wave', he mentions the badge which is part of the loyalty program invite waves. (No idea where HeroCon invite wave is in all this.)

Actually by now it's almost certain to launch on February 2nd. Back when Champions Online slipped its launch date they annouced it a few months prior to that happening. My guess with only roughly 4 weeks to go they are too close now to stop it from happening.

Now do I believe STO will be fully "ready" to play by February 2nd? No, not really.
But they will launch it then whether it's completely ready or not.

also, i dont know how often this needs repeated, but forum reg date is not game registration date, froum reg dates tell us nothing. as for when, i'm leaning to early feb too, id expect 2-3 months beta test, so to hit in the second quarter, we'd need to start no later than midway through the first quarter.
