How do I report a truely offensive name?

Ok, guys, the thing about me is that while I am fairly good at playing most AT's in CoX, I am pretty terrible at doing crossword puzzles. Really. I look at one, no matter how easy it might be, and immediately throw my hands up in the air screeching "I JUST DON'T KNOW!"
I just don't know. |

If you are treasure hunting on a battlefield wearing an enemy uniform, there is a high probability that you will be attacked.

This can happen.
Something I've always wondered, maybe you can answer Ocho. From time to time we hear stories about "someone reported my name so they could steal it" or similarly my name got taken from me but X weeks later I saw someone with it.
Can this really happen? Or does every name that get's removed for being offensive get put on a Master block list? I should think if that hasn't been done already, the engineers should really work on a GM tool for it. Seems like it could end up saving a lot of time and prevent a lot of GM So n So yanks a name but a year later GM what and who thinks it's fine. |
I had a toon name that was not desperately offensive and gave amusement to many people judging by tells I got (Debbie does Talos). This got generic'd.
Two weeks later, I see that not only is that name running around on the same server, but that it's a member of my SG running it. I ask the question and he thought it was original, I pointed out what had happened and he deleted it as it was a lowbie.
Also how offensive something is seems to vary wildly on the two sides of the Atlantic. A Spoonerism of something truly offensive (but one that created two perfectly sensible words so it wasn't glaringly obvious) was being run by a friend of mine and got to level 40 ish before being generic'd. That same name was a very minor character in a 1980s 8pm national TV comedy sketch show for many years here in the UK (where we have a no swearing on TV before 9pm rule), so was clearly not considered offensive here.

Completely concur here. In fact, I have a good friend who just had a toon generic'd as it was a fairly blatant rip-off of a well-known comic character (the costume was identical and the name was 90% similar). Within 2 days another friend made a toon using the same name with absolutely no problems, and then deleted it. The name is still available on our server (after checking again).

So strangely enough, they don't appear to "block" names when they generic the associated character.

He may be counting the CoH forums, which existed quite a bit in advance of even Beta (not to mention the game going live). Although usually GMs are in-game and 'mods' are forum-related, so...I dunno, maybe Ocho's just rounding way (way, WAY) up?

Make sure to include the server, side, and global handle of the players account. It will make it easier for them to track down the character in question.
send an in game petition with all the details and they will investigate and take any necessary action. you will recieve a generic email notifying you they have recieved your petition and will look into it etc and that they cant divulge the results to you. So unless you see the person getting genericed you may never know the actual results but I would guess that a name like that would definately get hit by the generic stick
|
In addtion, I would like to point out ...
Just because you see a high level character with a crude name doesn't mean that their name won't be genericized. It just means that they probably haven't been reported yet.
If you play the game with the names over players heads turned off, you really don't know the name of the other players that are running around until you are on a team with them or see their name in the search window.
My guess is that most people that have crude name on higher level characters are working to hide the fact that the character has that name from the majority of players. Otherwise, responsible players would have reported them at a lower level.

I assume you're not saying that YOUR settings affect what *I* see, right? (Because they don't.)

You can have your UI set for anything you want, but if I choose "show player names always", I will ALWAYS see other toons' names.
I'm not really understanding your "working to hide the fact" comment, unless you're under the mistaken impression that a person's own settings affect others' views within the game.

It's also possible that a high lvl with an offensive name leveled with a inoffensive name, and then paid for a name change. I'd not waste my money to do that, but some folks, who knows?

With the free server transfers, I suspect you don't have to pay for it.

Create a toon with the name of the toon you're about to transfer on the destination server.
Use your free transfer, get a name change token and use it.
Use another transfer to transfer it back.

Well, if you were really serious, you could get a character with an offensive name to 50 with zero chance of getting generic'ed.
I'm kind of lost there as well. I didn't realize you could "hide" your name from players somehow by working the system, unless you just mean /hide from searches.

1) Create toon.
2) Level pact with someone.
3) Never log in the offensive toon again until hitting 50.
Sounds pointless and idiotic to me, but you could do it.
