d-bags
Hardly. It's a pretty common mistake, they were just 'bags with no class. They could've let their character play it off as if their own renown meant their name was getting around. Or ignored it altogether and carried on with the conversation and perhaps later introduced themselves formally. Or politely pointed out your mistake OOC or in a tell so you could keep it in mind in future. Right click them, Player Note, one-star them in case you run into them on other characters later, and wander off in search of non-tools.

how do you deal with them in game as an RPer?
i was having a normal RP conversation, and made the mistake of assuming we all knew names of eachother. and i apologize if that seems noobish, really. i'm new at this thing. but they cussed me out for that, and for not capitalizing my i's. wth? it made me just want to quit virtue altogether. i wasn't quite sure how to respond to it as i was in RP mode. if i decide to go back in, i was wondering if i could have suggestions on how to handle it? i'm not really much for conflict and that just came off as...f*cking rude! was it really that bad of a slip up? |
First question: Was this an interaction in Pocket D?
Second Question: Why are you RPing in Pocket D?
Solution: Find a RP VG/SG and they'll be more than willing to take you under their wing.
Also, interact with other characters you have never met In Character as people you don't know. Unless you are a First Person Omniscient RPer like me. Which you aren't.
Wish you better experiences and good luck.
AlwaysAPrice: thank you very much. i felt the same way. i tried to play it off but someone chimed in and just started getting personal so i logged.
Tokyo: it was an interaction in pocket d, i RPed there first because that's where RPer's first began to speak to me. i'm sorry if i came across as rude. and wasn't exactly looking for pity so much as advice. i was kind of pissed at the time and didn't want to take my anger out on them because like i said, i'm new at this, and just started maybe 3 days ago. i have since read the "idiots guide to RPing" but of course there's some hands on learning involved. i don't mean to offend or bother anyone and if i am i'll get out of your hair and move to a different server if it means so. this game is just a stress relief for me, and i'd rather keep stress out of it. i didn't want any fights to start so i didn't talk back, just ignored them and looked for ways to avoid a situation like that again...hence why i'm here now.
How I would deal with people like that is to ignore them and move on. Okay, you may have broken some of their 'unwritten rules of RP' but guess what, those are their rules. And you're not required to interact with anyone you don't want to. Even if they didn't like how you RP, that's not a reason to go on a cursing streak at someone over it. Consider it a nice early warning system for you that you won't enjoy interacting with this person, and move on to find someone else that you will.
SG Mate: Cien, what the hell is this Rookery thing?
RadDidIt: (interjecting) Dude. It's the Rookery.
SG Mate: Yeah, but what IS it?
RadDidIt: Silliness Incarnate.

One star wonder these d-bags. You're overall gaming experience will rock. My current one star wonder is a very good player but a lousy person to play with... We could be having fun and all of a sudden it's like "why do you play like that? That move you just did totally sucked and you're stupid for not doing it my way." If he asks what he meant or who the offender was, he sulks and says nothing for the rest of the TF. "One Star" grief'd us once during an ITF, by herding a hoard of angry cimerorans down on us, leaving us to die. A rock solid Ned Flanders type player cursed, and quit after "One Star" told us WE were the bad players and refused to answer why he brought the whole mountain down on us... 6 months playing with "Ned" and he NEVER quit on anything until then. G D Diddly to paraphrase...
I wind up playing a ton of pick up task forces with plenty of coalition members that always seem to pick his main or an alt up, usually through a fringe connection to us (oh I know this guy LFT type thing), that I look forward to adding to his player notes. He's become caricature to me.
I have two SG's that totally won't pick him up when he's LFT, even though he's on our server forums, a good tactical player and well liked by "other" players... He's just not our cup of tea for many reasons...
Player notes will help you find the good ones... That great tank you just ran with, will probably have an excellent toon 2 months from now that you will easily notice in a crowd.

Irnee,
Don't let those people turn you off. I see all types of RPers from new to old hat in the D. There are some groups and some who tend to be more "jerkish" about things. I hope it wasn't people around me while I was doing my show for The Cape, and if it was, I appologize.
As far as the not capitalizing your I, there are some people out there who are pains in the butt about proper spelling, typing, grammar etc. Most of us don't care as long as we can read it.
Just keep up at it, and I bet you find people that will be more than happy to help you out, and take you in. I know of a bunch that learned by hanging in the D and going to things like the radio shows being broadcast, the events going on etc...

Just a heads up to the OP. The mods consider "self-censoring" a method of evading the language filter, and it is a bannable offense.
As for the remaining content, we were all noob RPrs once. Go back and use what you have learned.

One star + "moron" in the comments box = I don't even need to remember what it was about. They were an idiot and I one-starred 'em. |
Every new person starts with 3 and will go up or down accordingly.
Also... lolpocketdrp.
One-star, note, move on. The star and the note attach to the global, too, so you'll know 'em on their alts.

Yep, been there and done that, called folks by the name that appeared over their head. Happily didn't have anyone get nasty but I was teased about it. Just stopped looking at the name when rp'ing since it just gets ya into trouble :P
But yah, one star and move on, leave the rp 'gawd' to play with someone else.

((Yeah. There's some rude people no matter where you go.
But I have to say, I was very disappointed when I clicked on this topic.
I thought maybe d-bags were a new costume piece. ))
Yep, you get those everywhere.
So far i haven't run into that exact situation on CoX yet though, then again i don't hang out in Pocket D much (usually when i don't feel like grinding and no VG or global buddies are around).
Sorry to hear that happened to you though Irnee, don't let it get you down!

Don't you know that in RP that using i instead of I is code for "This person has tiny squinty (aka beady) eyes."?
And using txt speak such as "Wut r u up 2?" indicated a speech defect.
And lastly when a person rages about you supposedly not knowing their name that means they are actually playing a nobody in a cheap Halloween knockoff of that actual heroes costume. They are worried that the well known hero/villain Captain Insertnamehere who is often spoken of by civilians and who is often in the papers might get upset and come after Joe Wannabe if he thinks that the second rate copy cat is impersonating him rather than just imitating him.
If there are any more obscure things about RP you would like to know just ask and I'll make them u.... I mean explain them.

I have a feeling I've been one starred and ignored by most of Pocket D RPers. apparently i'm a "god-moder."
I'm not a god'moder.. I'm a first person omniscient RPer.

Gotta love the swarm of "lolPocketDRP" posts when Pocket D is still the most populated RP spot, and a really nice place for people to start their characters' journey.
In any case, Irnee, there are always people like that around. To be quite frank though, I would've also dropped you a tell in the given circumstances, probably explaining how your character would not always know the name of everyone, or that it's more convenient for people you're RPing with to use proper grammar and spelling. But I would've at least tried to not be rude about it.
Either way, I'm happy your situation was resolved.
