True. Looking back, it's not really anyone's fault but the idiot I mentioned. I was just unduly irate at the time. I just seem to catch jerks easier on other servers.

Hey, everyone's got to be good at SOMETHING.

Trick and Death go together like PB&J.

Because our red side population is fairly miniscule. Again, we're a low-pop server that's very blue-heavy.

There's another possibility. There are a fair number of folks who seem to have this mentality of "I'm the good guy, (or at least playing one) so whatever I do is right." Red side players don't have that particularity, because no matter how noble a character they may be playing, they're still in there beating up cops and other vile acts.

It's not a mindset that's limited to this game, either. You can find several stories a week about folks with that self same mentality in the news.

Q: How do you wreck an Abrams?

A: You crash into another one.

WOOT! QFT! Redside FTW! I
finished a LRSF the other day, even though the baby woke up on the last objective, held her in one arm while she fell back to sleep while assault-rifling the heroes, and running around laying traps one-handed!!! Now that's dedication! thank you devs for the ability to do everything with one hand! Saved my bacon! =D

I'll take that a step further, if simply for contrast, from my own Real Lifeā„¢ experience.

I'm christian. Evangelically so. Big fan of apologetics. Was involved in church building/leading, was a youth leader for 10+ years and worked at a national level for 2 different denominations. I'm still involved in a church, as is the rest of my family, in various functions.

Now as soon as some wrote this, some people's attitudes towards me already started changing based on preconceived ideas and their own opinions re: faith / religion.

I haven't changed - I'm still just a guy trying to "do what's right" and to place the needs of others before my own. But that's not what people will remember in the end.

People will remember the mistakes I did, the fights I got into, the moral failures - the mud on my face. Even more so now that they know I should know and act better. Not a complaint, just a fact btw.

Why?

Stating you want to do good puts you in the crosshairs automatically and makes you a target when - not if - it fails. People consistently expect more from you if you take a stand and state you're striving to do what's best, or at the very least do what's good. Everything you do gets evaluated in the light of that perspective. Let's call this guy Mr. Goody.

Now if you state that you're a loose cannon, looking out for number 1 first, state that only the strong survive and that the ends justify the means you'll never get as much criticism as that other guy in the paragraph above. Your behavior is right on par with the intended objectives, Mr. Baddy.

So how come Mr. Goody gets a worse rep than Mr. Baddy?

I'm getting to it.

Mr. Goody tries to do good and sometimes entices others to do the same. When Mr. Goody fails to do good (goes against his current), anything he's said or done before is instantly tarnished. It's invalidated. Most times he doesn't get a do-over.

When Mr. Baddy fails to do "bad"... no one really cares. When he acts egotistically, even at their expense, it's expected. In fact, if things were truly equal, when Mr. Baddy acts altruistically or generously towards others (so also going against his current) he should be seen in the same negative light as when Mr. Goody fails. But instead, congratulations and gratitude will probably be given him.

I know I'm oversimplifying things with this example.

But it remains that the perception of the "goodies" will always be worse than that of a "baddie" right from the start, simply based on that odd quirk of human psychology.

Note: This is a personal viewpoint. Your own expperience may vary.

I'm not. However, I'm also not a big fan of people who try to dredge up every possible wrong laid at Christianity's door since...well...since Joseph started wondering why "the kid" didn't look nothin' like him.

After a certain point, people just need to move on. Unfortunately, dredging up ancient wrongs done to people long before one was born is one of humanity's favorite passtimes.

It means nothing. Let them laugh when they're in Hell. Just do your damndest (pun intentional) to make sure you're not the next shrimp over on the barbie.

I have no problem with people who do good just because they can. My problem are with the chest-beaters. If I wanted exhibitionism, I'd go to a nude beach.

Last time I was on Freedom blueside, the one team member that was talking with me through tells about the deplorable behavior of a couple of the others that were on the team mentioned that he was Catholic. I replied that I was Pagan. He never said another word to me. *shrug*

So you're saying that blueside people are being perceived as jerks because they are not adequately living up to their roles as superheroes in a video game?

I guess it would be helpful to know what people mean by "jerks". Rudeness? Unwillingness to work properly with the team? Selfishness?

That's pretty crass for this discussion. I'm not going to go into it, but lemme say that there are very rational and very moral reasons to reject Christianity.

Hey, EVERY good idea for how to live your life hasn't come exclusively from Christianity.

That's me. Crass to the core.

Seriously though, just assume that 99% whatever comes out of my mouth (well..you know what I mean), is intended to be funny on one or more levels. The rest is just straight BS...

Rationality? In religion? C'mon, I thought you were serious there for a moment. We're talking about a system of BELIEF here.

If it's not your cup of tea, fine. There are many paths to "God" (or Cthulu, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or what-have-you). If you're trying to leave the world a better place than you found it (or at least not leaving it worse), more power to you.

If we were a rational, smart server, we'd stop the religious talk right now before people get their feelings hurt, and the mods swoop in and remove posts... Well, if we were a rational, smart server we'd have not started this aspect of the conversation in the first place, but still.

Either way, I suggest that it'd be a good idea to stop this line of thought before people get their views slammed, feelings hurt, noses out of joint and require soothers, etc.

Of course though, feel free to continue - no good can come of it, but I am sure it'll make for some entertaining reading!

Seconded!

Now why I play on Proitector is that I have friends here, I also play with friends on other servers as well. If I want to make sure I don't play with jerks,(except myself) I solo. ;p

This... thirded. Ya' always beat me to this stuff, Riverdarlin'. My comment was more, how the hell did this get turned into a religious conversation? Oh right, Stalemate needed to expand on MI's post, because we were too stupid to understand MI's post as written and needed examples. *nod nod*

That's fine, we'll convert the thread into "snide comments about Hyperstrike".

Better?

There's nothing you can say about me that I haven't said about myself (at least two or three times!) y'know.

If you want to take the post as a snap against you knock yourself out. It was directed at everyone, but if you see yourself as the one slamming people whatever. It's not as it was intended, but whatever man, take it, run with it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the reason I play on Protector is because my friends are here.

I can - and have - go on about the fun, goofy, friendly atmosphere, but the bottom line is that I picked a low population server, and then made a friend - Broken Shadow. Shad and I leveled our first toons to 50 together. On the way, I met some other friends, and then got invited into an SG. That's where I met Cowboy Dream. From teaming with CD, I met Ice9. From teaming with them, I met and befriended a number of other friends (like Zem and Ruby, Witchfrost, for instance), and we became The Spirit Army. Somewhere in there, I found the forums and Jello Shooters, and made more friends (like T and Rasta, Wolfie and Hulkers, to name a few), and then (God help me, ) the RSFers.

If not for these friends, I would likely have quit playing CoH entirely by now, but Protector is my home in CoH, and that's not gonna change.

My little in game family, and like my real life family, I love some of you, like most of you, and don't really care for a few of you, and a few are like that person married into the family that you just wish they would go away. But, like my real family, good, bad, ugly... I'm stuck with you. As long as I'm paying my money and playing this game, Protector will continue to be my home and my in-game family.

...and that's why I play on Protector.

Well said, Sooner.

As for me, the reason I play on Protector is basically because Korith had a few characters on this server, my twin, (Xylric, or Terwyn, as he goes by here.) was over on Pinnacle. I had played on Guardian for a while, but figured it would probably be easier to pick a server one of them was on so that I could team with them. So, I picked Protector, and haven't looked back.

Besides, common sense dictates that there'll be idiots whereever you go, so you might as well get used to it. After all, I've done quite a few idiotic things here, some of which I regret, and others, I look forward to doing again. (All Blaster Posi, of course.)

.... And did I just admit to having common sense? Something seems a little off, there...

I play on Protector because I Love Garcia Vega!

I picked up and moved to Freedom with my Girlfriend and Kids a while back. I stayed there for almost a year, but ran into way too many clueless people, noobs, jerks, too many Masterminds with NO pet control at all and horrid lag. I still have a Hero and Villain SG's and a couple of 50's there. I raised Mount Vega and Dam Skippy there, I was a part of the UJL, I learned a few PvP things with them and enjoyed myself until the infamous "Cape Crash" bug that made me take a little break. When I returned, I was dying to play my Rad. For some reason, I never wanted to make another one, so you guys got stuck with me.

Protector is where I started, and where I will be staying until I run out of character slots, or until the GF makes me quit.
