No, he meant defense checks use the higher number. If you have 40% AOE defense and 10% fire defense and get hit by a Fire/AOE power, it will check against AOE. If you get hit by a Fire/Ranged, it will check against Fire. If you get hit by a Smashing/AOE, it will check against AOE. If you get hit by a Smashing/Melee, you have no defense.

In this particular scenario though, both values yield a minimum hit chance, so it wouldn't particularly matter.

Actually I'm curious how you hit 61% typed defense period. Not even my Ice Tank hit those numbers.

In all seriousness it's not that hard for a bots/traps to get to 61%:
Force Field Generator= 15.8%
Scorpion Shield= 21.4%
Protector Bot shield= 12%
2 full sets of enfeebled operation= 8% (one in webnade and one in web envelope)
That's 57.2% right there. CJ and Maneuvers will take ya to 62 easily.

I apologize if this has been covered ad nauseum before, but I'm not finding the thread if it has. My Bots/Traps Mastermind has 48.29% Ranged Defense and 61.13% Smashing/Lethal Defense. How does the game determine whether a, for example, Family Gunner can hit me with his rifle? Does it make two separate "checks"? Does it take the higher value? Do the values stack?
Just curious.
