Oh my GOODNESS did i ever miss a decimal point there. Tiny little bugger!!!

Edit: Though the rest of my post still goes. Don't forget about level multipliers and to hit buffs when calculating. But still the DDR in SR is good.

True, though i rarely see it since i stay with +0/+1. =P

A good way to avoid that is to get a little over 45%. If you have 47%, you'll be able to take a 40% debuff without any difference.

I've yet to find a more massive game breaking melee toon than my DM/SR scrapper and brute, PvE.

Comparatively speaking your kryptonites and weaknesses are negligible and if you do throw billions of inf at the build, the toon just becomes silly powerful.

SR is very strong PvE. But it exemplars badly

I dunno about this. Even at L18, my DO'ed Kat/SR felt stupid tough. Enough that I took it to a Rikti Ship raid. And while I died (exactly three times), it felt a LOT more solid than some other lowbie toons (including brutes) that I've tried to take into such raids (sitting at 60-80% defense helped).

ZERO extra damage slotting (all acc/recharge/endred)

At L20, I stopped worrying about endurance. With the slotting I had, I simply didn't run out of endurance.

At 22, with Quickness and SO slotting, I was able to relax my recharge and endred slotting and finally slot damage.

Take on a pair of +3 bosses?
*Cue buzzsaw sound*
Okay?
Medic! One of them ALMOST hit me! It scared me! Give me a sedative!

About the only thing I don't care for in SR is clicky mez protection (I'm lazy, I prefer toggle mez, even if it's weaker). But I can live with it.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Reading through this thread got me curious. I put some effort into my BS/SR scrapper. I didn't really know that ALMOST hitting the soft cap made such a difference. Mine is 46.66% melee, 44.82% ranged, and 40.72% aoe. He doesn't get hit much. I assumed that was good...but after reading this I wonder. Is it? I'll go check my mids build to see if it's up to date and post it.

edit: Just remembered to drop in the last enhancement in the build I had waiting in the base and it took the ranged to 46.38%. Somehow, the same build in Mids comes out to 44.1% melee, 43.8% ranged, and 38.1% aoe. I'm guessing it isn't adding in combat jumping or something.

You are correct, CJ was toggled off. You have 46.7/46.4/40.7 def with it on. If you drop the common IO in the three autos and put two into super jump, you can 3 slot BotZ there. Then 6 slot slice with Scirocco's and you're soft-capped to all, with minimal changes and 1 slot left over. In general, frankenslotting and positional defenses don't go well together as the big boosts come from the 5th and 6th slots. Also, you look like you're going to have end issues. If you drop tough and weave and try to pick up the def from set bonuses then you might be in a better place. IMHO, YMMV, etc. etc.

Hey thanks.

I'll work that up in Mids and see what I think of it.

No end issues so far. During AV fights I usually turn off the ranged toggle to help out. Otherwise I'm going non-stop it seems.

edit: I've been playing this one at lvl 50 for weeks without that last enhancement....

You might want to take a look at this build Jeet. Better endurance, MUCH more regeneration. Capped to all 3 defenses without weave. More accuracy/to hit. (247% vs 402% regeneration, huge diff), more HP, tiny bit more damage. The only downside in the whole build is for whirling sword/headsplitter/disembowel its about .2-.4 seconds slower, (thats decimal point 2 and 4), however slice is ever so slightly faster, and hack is half a second faster in my build.

My build also offers maxed damage slotting on parry, which in the final IO build should be switched for slash (using parry for the 2nd biuld for exemplaring tfs). On top of the more recovery my build also has more end reduction on attacks, about 20% on all but whirling sword. 50% more end reduction on headsplitter, and about equal on disembowel.

Elude is not necessary with a capped SR build.

I'll load that in too. Thank you very much!

I'm sure I could live with that small recharge difference on the "big three". (But then again...it may seem like an eternity in game... )

(This is kinda fun....now I see why people trade builds around here)

Wind, for a loss of only 1.3 hp/sec you can boost end recovery by .6 end/sec by swapping the Numina's heal/end in PP for the miracle unique.

If you were doing that, it would be proportionately better to use 3 performance shifters and put the miracle in the 4th slot and keep the 12% regen bonus, granting more +max hp in the process and losing less regeneration than your suggestion. But you really have to figure, how much is that even needed. 2.2 end/sec with 60-70% end reduction on every attack except whirling sword, and the fact that you can shut off focused accuracy most of the time, and even tough as well in most situations resulting in a large increase in endurance recovery by doing so, the miracle in PP is by far unnecessary.

Reason I ask is I've had a Katana/SR level 50 since around i7 or i8, I've never really cared for the set that much but stuck with it & got it to 50. Now I find that playing the toon in either PvE & PvP just isn't fun anymore when I compare it to the other scrapper sets. Feels like the squishiest of all the Scrapper sets in both PvP & PvE.

PvP mainly because everyones accuracy is so dam high nowadays with the set bonuses etc & the defense/HP given just isn't enough to take an attacking players wave of strong attacks after build up.

PvE it seems like when you are hit once mid mob, you are dead. 1 hit lowers your defense, another hits lowers it again etc etc

I'm tempted to delete it, it would be the first time I've ever deleted a 50 & I'm just really wanting to make sure its not gonna be getting a buff in the next issue nor is it just me who seems to have this problem.
PvP has issues. In PvE, you may have issues. The primary should be used well and all the enemies should be positioned around you to get the most out of it. I often find that with most of my SRs that I may of got to low HP but then for the next minute or so, I don't get hit again, especially with my Kat/SR.

I also think it's important to slot and use Tough, and to pick up as many hit points as you can, such as getting the accolades. To the extent possible, you want to turn your one-trick pony into something that can survive the hits. Aid Self may also be useful in that regard, but isn't strictly necessary - BillZ doesn't use it, and he's posted what he can do with his.

(Edit: Oh, and here is a link to attack mechanics. But the very simple version is that almost all PvE enemies you regularly face will have a 50% chance to hit. You subtract your defense from that, and the minimum chance to hit is 5%. Therefore, the maximum USEFUL defense most of the time in PvE is 45%. There ARE a fair number of defense debuffs, but a well-slotted SR all but ignores those. And there are occasional enemies with higher to-hit, but they seem very rare outside of Architect Entertainment.)

(Edit: Also note that there's almost no such thing as close enough to 45%. What about 40%? You're getting hit twice as often. 44%? Getting hit 20% more often. On a super Reflexes in PvE, it's almost "soft cap or go home", at least when you crank up the end game difficulty.)

That 20% more may sound like a lot but because you get hit so seldom it really isn't much of a difference.

If you get hit 5 times out of 100 attacks adding 20% is only 6 out of 100. That's pretty negligable.

Getting hit 20% more often can make a difference when you are specifically trying to find out just how much you can survive. There's always SOME way to get near your limit, and that extra 20% damage makes for a lower limit.

If you don't try to play to the limits of your and your build's ability, and don't care about where those limits are, then no, 44% vs. 45% will never make a difference to you.

(Edit: And on second reading, like I said, "when you crank up the end game difficulty.")

Thanks everyone for your help, I went for this little build here & it works a treat in PvE.. much more enjoyable now & on the + side it cost me practically nothing in comparison with what most builds end up costing recently.

yeah my Claws/SR scrapper does the same thing. I do 1v1 against my friends and i win because of low health. I love the boost to dodging.

EDIT: wow this thread is kinda old. My bad!

:O Really?? I decided to make a Shields toon because my db/sr and fire/sr (both 50's and io'd out w/ soft cap!) irritate me 'cause when I get hit..I get hit HARD. I wanted something I could softcap easily but still have enough resistance that 2 hits doesn't = dead.

Having said that, SR, imo, does NOT suck... I love it! And after working on a bs/sd, I may stick with SR... we shall see.

SR sure did spoil me though ... I swear I'll probably end up making a dark/sr...or a bs/sr (if the shield doesn't work out)...or an ma/sr...or a kat/sr...or... >.>

SR is good for some pvp I use mine against masterminds. ive walked right over 5 trip mines and never got touched. ive got a Ele/SR with my 2 AOE attacks after build up its a easy kill on all minions then I just kill the MM. but like people have said SR sucks vs some AT's ive lost lots of battles vs other scrappers and brutes. So I made a DM/Regen for them and he does well.
