"Blade Runner"-style advertising

Okay, first of all, I know this is a totally wishful idea, but I was discussing the game with a former player from the EU servers and he made a comment about the movie "Blade Runner". The idea then popped up about one of the things from the movie, which was the floating billboards.

So the question then became why couldn't we have that now in Paragon City? How about having "The Spirit of Freedom" blimp (currently seen in Atlas Park) carry some billboards on either side of it? Maybe even have smaller floating billboards in places like Talos Island, Steel Canyon, and Founder's Falls. They could even have something like it over some of the areas in the Rogue Isles. I can easily envision an Arachnos recruitment poster hovering in Cap au Diable or Grandville.

(We'll skip over the idea of making them landable right now... would like to see it, but then again I'd also like to have the alts ride on top of the other moving objects.)

What do you think guys?

Having billboards <> In-game advertising.

The in-game advertising is largely a bust anyway, because no one's taking NC up on it. So it'd just be things like the "look out for the Rikti" or "Paragon Pizza" billboards already in the game, which are funny as heck.

I was not talking about in-game advertising.

then what are you talking about? floating billboards is in-game advertising. as far as i know no one reads them anyways so they aren't very useful.

I obviously didn't make myself clear enough. I stated my stance on in-game advertising, with full awareness that you were talking about floating billboards with fictitious advertising such as more Paragon Pizza's etc. Then I said that I wouldn't back those either as I think there are enough billboards and made-up ads in the game already.

Hope that clarifies things.

It's not that I'm opposed to this, but I have to as: why? What do regular billboards add to the game, anyway? Sure, they make it feel more like a city and some of them are outright goofy, but that's about it. Having floating billboards would make it feel LESS like a real city, and the jokes on them aren't funny funny enough to justify it. It works best when you fly past a billboard you barely even register, then double back to make sure you really saw what you saw. Yup! "Bail Bonds: Heroes put them in, we get them out!" Floating billboards would be too obvious to make that funny.

since no real world companies are taking up the advertising slots in game, I think we should be able to advertise MA arcs or put up SG recruitment ads.

Obviously Architect stories would be easier to implement, because they're universal, whereas SGs are server-specific.

Another option which would enhance the real-world-y-ness of the place would be a building or two with scrolling messages around the side of them...I'm thinking maybe something like the WW or Black Market prices in the same way as you see Stock Exchange stuff on some buildings in the world.

Now, before anyone gets all worried about MA arc adverts...I'd imagine there'd be a very limited set of options to put together your ad. Something like a shot of one or two characters, maybe a couple of fonts to choose from for the title. Start with the Dev's Choice ones or highest rated ones.

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

Regarding the OP, I see where you are coming from, but would tend to argue against it based on the idea that then it would feel like something more futuristic and different the vibe that Paragon City currently strives to achieve. You could argue it may be a nicer fit for the highly advanced and technologically savvy Praetoria... however, we really don't need the sky there cluttered with anit-Cole propoganda and subversive messages...

Now this is a truly interesting idea, particularly the MA arcs...

Hard to implement - risk of abuse, requiring vetting, etc. but a very interesting idea.
