Eh, i have an Earth/Rad named Der Buck Futter (inspired by the SNL Jeopardy skit) who is about three to four years old now and still not generic. Of course that's probably related to not having played him more than an hour in that time. At some point i may delete him, but he's on a server i almost never play on, so it's not like i need the slot. i occasionally make alts with funny names, but Buck is the only one with an overtly offensive name who ever made it past a couple hours before i deleted him to make room for an alt that i might actually play longer.

The only other character who might be slightly vulnerable to the generic bat is DragonnadZ, a Peacebringer who i created around the peak of the DBZ knockoff craze in CoH. (Gawdz, the number of Energy/Energy blasters running around claiming to be super saiyans and the like was retarded. All the more so since these "most powerful fighters ever" tended to spend most of their time faceplanted.)

Virtually none of my characters are overtly offensive, and i've never had any difficulty coming up with original names, looks and back-stories, even for my alts who are references or homages to characters from other settings, so i've never had a character made generic. Honestly, i have no idea why some people feel the need to name their Inv/SS Tanker C1ark Kent.

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

I had a toon named Muadib. Got nerfed because it supposedly violates copyright (for those who don't know 'Dune' the main character, Paul Atreides, is called Mu'adib).
However...'Mu'adib' is an Arabic word meaning someone who teaches you refinement. That's like claiming a copyright on the word 'ocean' or 'human'.
Now this isnt the first Arabic word I've used for a toon name. My fave toon's name--Shaytanah--means both 'demoness' and 'she-serpent' in Arabic and Hebrew. I have one on Virtue called Khalid al-Saifullah ('Sword of God'). List goes on.
Not understanding another language is no reason to nerf my name At least my tank, Le French Tickleur, is still going.

Best part? When the devs violate copyright they ignore it. Example: There's an old Star Trek episode called 'By Any Other Name'. The aliens in it are called 'Kelvins' (temperature measurement aside its close to 'Kheldian') and one of the Kelvins is named 'Kelinda'.

Now I understand nerfing copywritten names--its to protect the company from law suits. Cool. But don't tell me that I'm violating copyright when I do it, but its no big deal for the devs.

Off soapbox. Thanks.

P.S. I once made a thread pointing out the Star Trek rip-off. Thread was gone like lightning yet all my new vills end up working for the Walking Copyright Violation of Mercy Island.

Sorry. Kheldian and Kelvin is nowhere near close enough to claim anything.

You can use a word in Arabic, or whatever, all you want, but if you make it a proper name, and there is some other intellectual property that already has it for a name, you lose every time.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

That is something that annoys me. There are a lot of common words that would be great for a superhero concept and then down the road you find out that there is some super obscure little hero/villain that showed up in one panel of one comic book and so it can't be used. Or, I've seen people complain about this on other forums- you create a toon and then a year (etc.) later there is a character that is created in a book/movie that has the same name and you get gen'd even though you were using the name first. Doesn't seem fair.

Yeah but 'Kalinda' and 'Kelinda' are close enough.

This is open to a lot of abuse. If I copyright a name someone else uses--but hasn't copyrighted yet themselves--I can then sue them for royalties.
American copyright laws are nasty strict; we're a little more relaxed in Canada. Here you can dl all the music you want--we pay a little fee on blank CDs that goes to the recording industry to shut them up

Ahaha, thats clever.
Seriously though, theres no offensive words there but i guess its what the sensitive people perceive and perception is everything in these matters...

yeah, unfortunately alot of things are not fair in life, but thats just the way it is sadly.....

mostly, when it comes to possible copyright infringement, its in their best interest to remedy that immediately (and so covered in their ToA), or face a possible sue by the offended party. So yeah..... much easier to forcibly change a character name than being monetarily bilked...

What kind of a name is Poon?

Comanche Indian.

It is fun to make a toon just to see how long it goes before being nerfed. My 'Sayrah Paylin' (ice/ice tank) was nerfed in under a week.

Course, she was the spitting image of Palin...should have made her an AR blaster tho.

Ultraaman!

The Slayer cover. One of the angriest songs I know. I'm a huge fan.

Slayer and Megadeth are playing here in my home town in less than a week.

GWAR was here last week too--I got GWAR goo'ed :P

Big fan of Slayer and JP, so I love both versions. When 'South of Heaven' came out (there's my age....) I was thrilled to see Slayer covering a JP tune...

South of Heaven is just plain awesome. I am firmly convinced that if there actually is a hell, that if you die and go there, that album is the official soundtrack. And Slayer live is always a blast. Megadeth used to be, but Mustaine has evolved into something of a whiny *****.

I had Sailor Mew, and yes, she was "What if Sailor Moon was a catgirl?", a parody.

Her current name is classified. I've changed it again since they forced me to. <.<

Yes, I believe that I was reported by someone on my team at the time, out of spite.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

Not to "call you out" (cuz ya know I adore you); but you never had the name Phoenix on Champion.

How do I know?

Because I had that name and it got generic'd. (Still have the emails from years ago)

Perhaps it was on a different server.

-------

I even had CuppaJoe try and help me keep it. (Which was awesome)

He was a (male) Native American shaman with a bio that was totally unique.

And you can't copyright a mythical creature like a Vampire (or Manticore). You can only copyright it as the title of an offering.

Long story short ---> that name is long gone. I understand why; and this was during the time when Marvel was all up in arms about that stuff (years ago - before they dropped their case)

I do miss that name, though.

Le French Tickleur was generic'ed. So the new name is now Reine DesSeins--very VERY loosely, 'Scheme Queen'. But its a good French pun too, which amused my French-speaking Champ buddies laugh.

Once one of you was genericed, what's to prevent the other person from creating one?

Back on topic: I've never had one genericed, and I've only created one that I thought might ever get genericed.

He was a cigar-smoking doctor who'd acquired powers from radiation exposure. His name was Doc Nuke 'Em. I chickened out, though, and deleted him after only a couple of levels.

I have not been gen'd yet, but I have one I figured has been reported a time or two.

Mammatus

It is currently storm/sonic defender. Though when electrical control is out it will be an elec/storm troller. It started as a storm/electric a long long time ago and it went to a galaxy far far away....

Mammatus is a type of cloud under a cumulonimbus which looks like a mammary.

I've got a PvP Blaster by the name of Tea Bag, and I imagine if I actually pulled him out and played him more often he'd get the "g".

It really has to do with how many people "narc" on you (for vindictive reasons or otherwise), and if you have a realistic reply and back story to back up your characters.

I have found NC Soft to be very reasonable if you honestly aren't making a copy or obvious name-take.

(And I suppose two people could have had the same name if they didn't add it to the filter. I didn't mean my reply harshly, either way. I like GP a lot.)
