Yeah that's pretty ******. I've been told to grow up but that's something I wholeheartedly agree with. It won't happen but I agree with it.

Generally, the players leaving insulting and nasty neg-reps don't listen to thoughtful posts, don't listen to facts, and only care that their opinion is right.
So yes, it's a simple question, but the answer involves a psychological... I'm glad I don't think like that, act like that, or understand that behavior.
I've received my share of 'rude comments' by those remaining anonymous. The developers as much as they wanted this to be a "fun game", should have known better than to do something like this to begin with. But whatever, it's just another thing for them to have to mod.
I've had my share of beefs with people and I make it known and those people know who they are; my point: own your shyte so to speak. Don't hide behind a "fun game rater".
That said, warnings or not by the mod-bat, if you don't want to get negative comments, disable it and don't play their game. That is always an option. Or stick with the popularity contest and "have fun".

I'd like to believe that most of us are rational adults with relatively thick skin when it comes to online idiots. But sometimes the Dark Side of the Force is just so seductive and before you know it, you're slinging terms like "doody head" and "booger face." You must remain strong and not give in to idiocracy (good movie, btw). Cyber bullies win when they bring you down to their level. If it becomes too much for you, do as Tax_E says and disable reputation. If it persists, then report it as a violation of the terms of use.
These boards are horrible enough, we sure don't need griefers here.
I'm glad they're acting.

It's the internet. Some people are prone to be jerks when they can hide behind a wall of anonymity. Then there are the trolls. Both seem to want 'shock value'. There's not much shock value in neg repping someone with a comment of "I disagree with what you said". It would barely rate attention.
Now harassing comments take a simple PM to have the comment and neg rep deleted. Viola, gone. And now that they will modsmack for it there's an incentive to be civil regardless of reason and intent in giving neg rep.
Neg rep for posting "welcome back to the game" and the like is obviously unfounded. It's simply intended as harassment and isn't going to be as effective anymore. The mods can tell who leaves rep; what a poster has given as easily as received. Either a poster will be civil, even if mean by intent, or they're going to lose rep and possibly posting priviledges entirely. Their own words will condemn them just as much as if they had posted here.
And gosh my rep list looks prettier without the harassment (Niviene cleared it out). I've only ever gotten one neg rep that didn't come from this forum and I consider that I probably deserved it. I posted hastily and in retrospect what I said was pretty dumb.

However, that being said, you should be cool to one another for the most part. But, going to the teacher to tattle on someone calling you names....meh I wouldn't have done it. But then again, I don't much worry about what others think of me.
Look, sure the offense is removed and things look better, but...most importantly, it never really mattered in the long run. Those who think highly of you still do. Those that trolled you will find new and interesting ways of trolling you. This is after all the interwebz.

I will always take the stance that, yes this is a game, but it not JUST a game. There are people who play this game and this is their social outlet. Some are housebound for whatever reason and this is their way of socializing.
We've all said stupid stuff to one another and either moved passed it or ignored one another. Regardless of being text or not, treat those as you would want to be treated.
A lesson many of us, definitely myself, have learned the hard way.
