For the life of me, there wasn't a single pumpkin to be found anywhere in Florida...at least not around where I live.
Whilst I'm not in the same class as the rest of the people here, this is one I did with my 3 yr old son, Clark 
Nothing spectacular and a little wonky, but we had fun making it 
We built this city on Rock and Roll!
That is Superb! You and little Clark did an excellent job!
Soul, That spider turned out really well! And the amount of detail in the Crow and Skullcap one scares me. (that's a good thing)

Anything is fine so long as you carved it.
Look at it this way: you get points for the idea and execution. If your pumpkin was someone else's idea, you're going just on execution points to win. If it was both your idea and carving, then you've got two pools of points to win from.
Good stuff so far! I hope a few more people post soon!
(We also accept apples and other things if you had no pumpkin to carve!)

Apparently we don't have many pumpkin carvers around here....
My pumpkin is in pieces at the bottom of my Dad's long, steep driveway. It got rolled before a picture could be taken!

Totally late but I did this yesterday with a leftover pumpkin from my girlfriend's science class. (she's a teacher).

Now, I never said it was my own design.. I just never said it wasn't
I could trace someone elses art to get the pose and body right and such then modify it to my own vision of costume and such... I could even think it way cool and put on my wall... But I wouldn't enter a contest with it. Personally, for myself and myself only, I would look at the pumpkin pattern the same way. It's probably cause I do have some meager art skills and it's my own darn fault for not polishing them up and getting as good as I could be... but since I know I could do a semi decent job on my own on such things, that I'm just too lazy to do it, I wouldn't feel right taking "shortcuts" and entering it into a contest.
And again, I really do not mean to cast any aspersions... (is that the word? a bit drunk and fuzzy atm...) As I read the rules you are totally valid in your use of such so I have absolutely no problem with you doing so...
I was just saying that I knew some people would come out with some kick butt Jack-O's, whether through singular effort or through use of helping tools, and I further knew I wouldn't really put in enough effort to even come close to competing... So anyway, instead of entering I had a bit of fun with the contest with doing my amusing little during work doodle up there somewhere... If I wasn't going to put in the effort to actually enter I figured I could at least participate in an amusing way is all...
Even using a pattern you definitely did use more patience and dedication than I was willing to and for that, win or lose, I definitely applaude you.
