Hi, Im currently running COH on a mac so I dont have access to mids. Could some please tell me how much defense from sets is needed counting slotted weave and shield powers to soft cap the toon on positional defenses. Thanks ^^

Well, The toggles, plus Phalanx Fighting, plus Weave, gives you about 27% Defense to all positions...so, you're looking at needing another 18% to softcap.

It's going to be tough to get to the soft cap with Fire or Elec but it's possible.

A couple of thoughts about it:

  • Combat Jumping/Super Jump both slotted with 2 Blessing of the Zephyr adds 3.13% ranged defense each, totaling 6.26% ranged
  • Mako's Bite gives 3.75% ranged defense at 6 slots (Single Target Melee attack)
  • Touch of Death gives 3.75% melee defense at 6 slots (Single Target Melee attack)
  • Scirocco's Dervish gives 3.13% AOE defense at 5 slots (PBAOE Melee attack)
  • Obliteration gives 3.75% melee defense at 6 slots (PBAOE Melee attack)
Trying to stack up the bonuses you need in all three positions will be a challenge for you... my BS/Shield allowed me to take the easy way out and only worry about Ranged/AOE and let Parry make up the Melee difference.

Most of the /Shield builds I've seen focus on passing the softcap to melee and ranged and usually fall a bit short in the AoE department, but in many cases that's not a big deal since most damage isn't from AoEs anyways, not to mention that you've got tons of HP and decent resists to lessen the damage that does get through.

AOE is certainly less important than melee/ranged but I wouldn't ignore it... once you get melee/ranged to 45% I'd shift my focus to punching as much AOE def as is practical.

Oh, another IO you'll want is the Steadfast +3% defense unique. I imagine that went without saying but I wanted to make sure.

I almost forgot, 6 slotting Gausian's into Build Up will give you 2.5% to all positions; another thing to consider. I forgot about it earlier since I didn't need it to soft cap my BS/Shield... I went with two Adjusted Targeting and a common recharge for the damage bonus.

On my /SD, I have around 16% set bonus defense, and I'm at least 45% defense to all position. So, yeah, around 15.5-16% should get you there.

EDIT: That's running CJ and Weave by the way. I know you said you had Weave, but if you don't have CJ or Hover, then you're going to need about 3% more.

Also remember that multi-strikes offer 1.88 AoE def (5 slots) and 1.88 melee def (6 slots) and these are fairly cheap. You can also slot razzle dazzle (I love this set) in boxing (which is a pre req for tough/weave), 5 slots for 2.5 melee def and 6 slots for 2.5 aoe.

The following is the build I'm gonna work to. With the exception of OBLITERATION, BLESSING-ZEPHYR, REACTIVE ARMOR, and MIRACLE this is a cheap build.

I play on Freedumb & those 4 sets are EXPENSIVE. By expensive I mean not any of my toons wil have access to over 100Million inf. at any given time.

Looking at other shield builds I may have missed something. Does one have to put a DEF in PHALANX in order to get the def. bonus per ally? Or does the enh. simply increase the base 3.75% bonus per ally?

The def to self w/out allies from phalanx fighting is unenhanceable, while the def from allies is enhanceable. I'd venture a guess that the reason most people just throw in a generic Def is that there are really only 2 uniques worth slotting, the LoTG or the kismet I plan on using a kismet only because I had one drop, otherwise I'd just toss in a def myself.

What I am doing on my shield brute is to hit the single insp cap. 33% defense. That is the point where you can take a single purple and hit the soft cap. Filling up my tray with purples I can stay softcapped for about 30 minutes or more (purples drop as I'm fighting)

That is more than enough time to solo an AE farm mission to earn more money to buy more enhancements to get more defense so I can...

I would drop that +Def off of Combat Jumping (since it gives under .5% def buff) and move the slot to either Deflection or Battle Agility for that extra 2.5% Ranged Def....other than that it looks like an effective, affordable build.
