Hello and hi there

Hey everyone, I'm a new player, and sadly, not very tech smart.

I don't know how to use the chat in game, so I am inadvertantly ignoring people, and at a whopping level 2, I think I need all the help I can get. Can someone help me figure it out Hero side?

Also, I want to play just about every archtype, lol, I like them all and all the different powers. Since it seems so far that i will be leveling solo, is there a archtype that would do well for both solo and team play? What archtype are the higher end groups looking for?

Thanks for any and all helpful replies.

You can solo and team play just about any AT some are harder than others but for the most part it is possible.

As for what people are looking for depends on what they are doing, no one is in "need" of certain ATs.

Good luck and have fun playing!

That's refreshing. I came from World of Warcraft where only certain classes were realy viable for higher level team play.

Thanks, and I hope to see you in game.

In City of Heroes you can make pretty much an eight man team of any AT and still have it viable.

When you're just starting out, I really suggest using a Scrapper. It's the most soloable AT, is generally forgiving of mistakes due to having defense/resistances/mez protection, and had good damage output. This makes it a good platform for learning a lot of the game mechanics.

Since Tuesday, they revamped the way teams work, so generally any level character can team with any other without a huge hindrance.

On chat... In the guide section, there's a few good player made guides. If you right click on your chat tabs, you can add/remove the chat types that you have per tab or even create a new tab. Generally, for communicating, you're going to want Local, Team, Broadcast, Request, Private Messages, and later Supergroup and Coalition (if you join a supergroup).

Also, try looking into the Global Chat guides. There's several good Global Chat channels for game discussion / teaming, most notable Victory Forum.

Sweet, thanks, I'll fiddle with those tabs after maintenance. Thanks again.

If you post the type of character you used over in WoW, I'm sure someone here will be able to give you suggestions for over here. However, it might be best to simply try one of each archetype to see what feels best for you.

As far as chat, you can generally just hit Enter and it'll put the cursor in the chat box or you can click it with your mouse. If you accidentally closed your chat box, just hit 'C'. There's some tiny squares in the bottom of your chatbox that allow you to switch between Team chat, Local chat, etc.

A quick tip for sending Tells (they're they yellow messages people might send to you, and these are private) -

If you hit the Backspace key, your chat window will automatically be setup to reply to the last person that sent you a tell. It took me a few weeks of playing to learn that trick and it was immensely valuable once I figured it out!

I played a Paladin (tank), Hunter, and Mage in WoW.

Thanks for the chat tip.

You should totally be a blaster.

If you feel like trying out a villain, I'd recommend starting out with a Brute for the same reasons Hamster recommended a Scrapper for hero side.

Haha, yeah, I made a Tech and a Mutant Blaster and tried both, as well as a Magic Scrapper and SS/Shield Tanker. So far I am leaning towards the Mutant blaster.

I would try a villain, but I'm afraid I'm too much of a Hero at heart. :P

Just a little FYI, the Origin of your characters, while nice flavor, largely plays no role in the rest of the game. Focus more on what your powersets are when describing them to people than what Origin it is.

There are some side-effects to what origin you select, but on the whole it's all very minor stuff.

Okidoki, good to know, thanks.

So far made a Gun/Device Blaster, Energy Blaster, Fire/Dark Scrapper, and a Super Strength/Shield Tanker.

Is that the right way?

Yep! Origins are fun, but knowing what your sets actually are lets us give you actual opinions on them.

However, and this is a big one - Take everyone's opinions about a powerset or combo with a chunk of salt. The most important thing is to play what you think is fun, and not what other people say is good or bad. Everything in this game is viable. It all depends on if you have fun playing it.

So far that's the hardest thing for me. Out of the characters I've made so far, I love em all! Thinking I may go with the Energy Blaster though, seems fun.

Welcome to CoX, Volken!! Lots of really good people that play both sides of the game, and you have chosen a very good server to start with that has lots of really good peeps on it! Enjoy your time learning the ropes.

Actually, I like Blasters for learning the game. Since you don't have to balance defense vs. offense (you're all offense) it's a lot harder to really muck up a build. By level 10 you should have a pretty good understanding of MOB mechanics, line of sight and how to pull (if you need to pull). Once you get into the low teens you start running into things that can mez you, so you start to learn how to deal with those (kill them fast!) and not get into TOO much trouble. If you group, you'll quickly learn about aggro mechanics, because blasters can gain a LOT of attention if they plow forward with AOEs too quickly.

Scrappers are definitely a lot more solo friendly, though, and are a good mix of damage versus defense.

Once you get the chat system figured out, I'd recommend the Victory Forum channel. Also, the guides section here on these forums has some good reads for new players.

And remember...Victory is better than Virtue.

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

You already have alt-itis! Excellent.

Energy blaster is indeed a ton of fun.

Welcome to Victory....

It's an awesome server to learn how to play the game.

Welcome, Volken! Glad you've decided to choose Victory as your CoX home!

You might also want to check the SG thread (stickied in this very Victory forum) and see if any SGs strike your fancy. An active SG (and there are some VERY good and active ones on Victory) is a great resource for new players, useful for finding teams and joining events, getting questions answered quickly by veterans, etc.

Anyway, welcome and have fun!

Victory is an amazing server to learn the ropes. Started playing there 4 months ago and have not looked back. While I am still pretty noobtastic there were some really great players that helped me learn the ropes and how to be an energy blaster (more importantly controlling kb)
