Quote:Interesting little slice of Victory drama to spice up my afternoon.
Alt, I think your post came across extremely harsh, intended or not (and I have a hard time believing you really didn't think your post was going to be provocative). Volken is a newer player, and all he did was express worry that he chose an AT that many others did as well, and that it might negatively impact his ability to get teams. All that needed to be said was that a truly good group of players playing as a team would accept most any AT in CoX and be able to excel and enjoy themselves. And accusing him of being "part of the problem" isn't very nice -- he's a new player (which you acknowledged by welcoming him to the game), so he doesn't have that many alts yet to choose from. Give him time, I'm sure that will happen sooner rather than later.
Volken, hopefully you took some positives from this thread. 4.5 years ago when I started playing this game, I felt much the same as Alt seems to about Tankers. The first 2 or 3 I teamed with a significant amount DID consider themselves to be the de facto team leader, whether they had the star or not, and also seemed to think they were God's gift to AT build advice (and not just Tanker builds!). I remember feeling like I would NEVER want to roll a Tank because "all" Tankers were jerks -- but as I played more and made more friends I met many, MANY more people who played Tanks (some as their favorite or "main" AT, others as just one of their many alts), and I came to see that it truly is the PLAYER behind the toon that determines their behavior. A classy person playing any toon is classy; a crass jerkhole playing any toon remains a crass jerkhole.
That said, do keep in mind that now with I16's Super Side-Kicking (SSK) you don't have to be within any particular range to accompany a team anymore, so feel free to roll up some ATs you want to try out and get on a kick-a$$ Victory team! And as others have pointed out, play what you like and have fun -- it's a game.
Thanks, all of that was great advice and very well thought out points. I appreciate everyone who has posted. It's nice to get honest replies, rather then what I am used to getting on the WoW forums, which was....sad.
I tend to stay pretty quiet in most teams I have been in, not because I am shy or snobbish or anythig, but because I am trying to watch and learn. So if you do team with me, just remember I am not being a snob, just watching for good tactics.
Hope to see you in game and look me up if you have a spare slot in your teams. -

Quote:Every time you post I feel like I been hit with a fist full of smart! Thanks.I'd be remiss if I didn't link you to the Titan Network.

I went Fire/Fire Tanker and can say I LOVE the AT and powers!
-
Thanks for all the replies, I honestly didn't think this thread would go past page 1. The humor and opinions are all greatly appreciated.
And just FYI, I have never been a primadonna. In WoW I always thought everyone (Healer, Tank, DPS) were important to the team, and often feel happy just to be invited to a Instance/Raid. The same has been my experience so far in this game. So if ya see me on, please, hit me up! Character name is Volken and I just love to play. -
Quote:But if all I have is a Tank at the level the team is running at, then how would I possibly play another AT?
Well, I have to assume that you are playing a Tank.
If you are playing a Tank and there are nothing but Tankers, aren't you part of the problem for being unwilling to play another AT?
Quote:I'll say this.
Honestly, if I'm running a team and I have my choice about which AT's to pick to fill a team, I don't pick any Tankers or Scrappers and, if possible, I won't pick any Warshades or Peacebringers either (because they have Dwarf forms).
Why?
If you invite a character that thinks that they can get away with charging ahead and taking the agro, the player thinks that they are running the team and it is the rest of the teams duty to keep up with them.
This is not the case, this is not the only way that a team can be successful.
Quote:I play Tanks, and I don't treat the other players like that.
Quote:Oh, btw, welcome to the City.
Quote:The dynamics are completely different here. Learning how to help other players on your team makes the whole team stronger. It's a matter of understanding the other ATs and not just assuming what they do. The best way to understand them is to play them.
I'm not trying to be harsh about this. If it comes across that way, I'm sorry. But I see it time and time again that many Tankers are about themselves and not about being part of a team. -
Seems every team I get into at leve 1 - 15 is full of tankers. This causes me to worry that I wont find teams to group with at higher levels due to all the tankers. Having come from WoW, I don't want to go 50 levels just to be told that I can't get into a team because there are already too many tankers.
I know that sounds petty on my part, but it just makes me worry a bit that I wont find any teams later. -
More! More links, c'mon guys, I know you got some other goodies hidden in your pockets!

Quote:Yeah, everyone is great, both in game and here on the Forums. I actualy found a Fire Tanker to be pretty awesome, and am now playing it full throttle! It helps I found a realy great person and guild to help me out.Whoops, missed this thread. Welcome Volken to CoH and Victory.
Looks like you got a ton of advise so far.
If you are ever wandering hero side, look me up, my toons name is the same as my Forum name. -

Thanks Sucker, as usual you have given me a helpful reply. ^.^ -
Can someone point me to the thread where the most common accronyms and abbreviations for the game can be found? Or list them here? Thanks. ^.^

Quote:I can respect that. One way around that is skipping the tutorial and only doing custom missions in the Architect Entertainment building. Still, it might be best just to wait until GR to see how sideswitching works out.
I appreciate the respect instead of "Lol, just pixels dood!"
Is the Arch realy worth it? Does it give as much xp at lower levels as reg missions and the tutorial? -
I keep seeing people say the tanker is the most rewarding character to play at higher levels, why is that? I'm a total noob at this game, so I am realy interested to know what the big bonus of being a tanker is when I have been told any group make-up can pretty much roll through the content.

Brawler, had fire and Strenght (I think). It was all beastial looking and dark, it looked awesome. The part that gets me is that you gotta beat up cops and Detention Officers right from the start, kinda strikes a bad note with me for personal reasons.

Thanks for the warm welcome and many friendly replies. I'll look up a SG when I've setteled on a character, as I said before, I love them all so it's hard to choose one right now, lol.
Once I do settle on a toon, I'll try and find a SG, and hopefuly head to level 50.
I have 1 Villain character that I tried out. Just not my thing. Can I still have waffels? ;-) -
Quote:Yep! Origins are fun, but knowing what your sets actually are lets us give you actual opinions on them.
However, and this is a big one - Take everyone's opinions about a powerset or combo with a chunk of salt. The most important thing is to play what you think is fun, and not what other people say is good or bad. Everything in this game is viable. It all depends on if you have fun playing it.
So far that's the hardest thing for me. Out of the characters I've made so far, I love em all! Thinking I may go with the Energy Blaster though, seems fun. -
Quote:Okidoki, good to know, thanks.Just a little FYI, the Origin of your characters, while nice flavor, largely plays no role in the rest of the game. Focus more on what your powersets are when describing them to people than what Origin it is.
There are some side-effects to what origin you select, but on the whole it's all very minor stuff.
So far made a Gun/Device Blaster, Energy Blaster, Fire/Dark Scrapper, and a Super Strength/Shield Tanker.
Is that the right way? -
El Paso Texas! Mountain Time!
I used to live in lower Michigan and delivered alot of goods to NJ and NY! I know the states most of the posters here live in!
Except the Englander. Though I wish I could visit the Brits sometime! Cheerios! -
Haha, yeah, I made a Tech and a Mutant Blaster and tried both, as well as a Magic Scrapper and SS/Shield Tanker. So far I am leaning towards the Mutant blaster.
I would try a villain, but I'm afraid I'm too much of a Hero at heart. :P -
Quote:A quick tip for sending Tells (they're they yellow messages people might send to you, and these are private) -
If you hit the Backspace key, your chat window will automatically be setup to reply to the last person that sent you a tell. It took me a few weeks of playing to learn that trick and it was immensely valuable once I figured it out!
I'll remember that! Thanks alot! -
Quote:If you post the type of character you used over in WoW, I'm sure someone here will be able to give you suggestions for over here. However, it might be best to simply try one of each archetype to see what feels best for you.
As far as chat, you can generally just hit Enter and it'll put the cursor in the chat box or you can click it with your mouse. If you accidentally closed your chat box, just hit 'C'. There's some tiny squares in the bottom of your chatbox that allow you to switch between Team chat, Local chat, etc.
I played a Paladin (tank), Hunter, and Mage in WoW.
Thanks for the chat tip. -
Quote:Sweet, thanks, I'll fiddle with those tabs after maintenance. Thanks again. In City of Heroes you can make pretty much an eight man team of any AT and still have it viable.
When you're just starting out, I really suggest using a Scrapper. It's the most soloable AT, is generally forgiving of mistakes due to having defense/resistances/mez protection, and had good damage output. This makes it a good platform for learning a lot of the game mechanics.
Since Tuesday, they revamped the way teams work, so generally any level character can team with any other without a huge hindrance.
On chat... In the guide section, there's a few good player made guides. If you right click on your chat tabs, you can add/remove the chat types that you have per tab or even create a new tab. Generally, for communicating, you're going to want Local, Team, Broadcast, Request, Private Messages, and later Supergroup and Coalition (if you join a supergroup).
Also, try looking into the Global Chat guides. There's several good Global Chat channels for game discussion / teaming, most notable Victory Forum.

Quote:That's refreshing. I came from World of Warcraft where only certain classes were realy viable for higher level team play. You can solo and team play just about any AT some are harder than others but for the most part it is possible.
As for what people are looking for depends on what they are doing, no one is in "need" of certain ATs.
Good luck and have fun playing!
Thanks, and I hope to see you in game.
