F2P is indeed Free 2 Play.
VIP is just their term for someone who continues to pay a monthly subscription. They get all class/race access, more characters per server, more adventures and zones. All of that can be bought by the F2P people either using the ingame points that you get from doing quests and dungeons, or by buying points (as I did to get the race & class unlocks).
It's like if you could buy and play CoX the way we do now, or you could play for free, but only certain AT's or powersets, and the TF's wouldn't be available nor would the co-op zones or bases be available. You could grind out merits to buy access to a specific TF, or you could pay a few bucks to buy the merits and then trade them for access to it.
*shrug*
It's an interesting model and really suits the casual gamer that enjoys the game, but not enough to dedicate cash per month to it. You can pay for a month, then after that time your access goes back to F2P-er again if you feel like a burst of the game (of course you need to actually buy the game to ever be a VIP, which is why I snagged it for 7 bucks
).

So, digging into their support database, I see there are actually three subscriber modes. Free, Premium and VIP (monthly sub). You qualify for Premium by being a former subscriber or buying stuff from the DDO store, and it gives you a few extra perks over a free player, including 2 extra character slots per server and some adventure packs, though I'm not sure which. A nice touch.

I'm still waiting for Turbine to send me a free key to DDO.
I am not using multiple accounts in order to play the game.
Also, if you pay for a month of access, you get VIP treatment during that time. However, if you make a 'locked' character, like a drow or warforged, or a monk or the other one (some spellcaster), once you become free you lose access to them until you pony up the cash to buy those characters
So, once I have the game legit, who would want to roll up characters (maybe) and start a Rookery static team?

Yeah, I really liked the Eberron setting. I just wish the Warforged characters in DDO didn't look like metal gorillas... Or that they included Shifters as a race.
And yes Rad, I've been trying to get together Rookery. people to play. Or at least get all those interested in one server so we can play together. BP rolled on Cannith, so that's where we should go. I made up a character there too, right before they shut the place down for maintenance.

I'm fed up on waiting on their email. It'd probably be a week. I'll call them a little later to get a key. I can't call them now, because their account offices are only open from 4pm ET-8:45pm ET (what type of hours is that?).

I've got the rogue covered. I'm redoing my favorite character from Argonessen, who is a Ranger 2/Rogue X. Scout and Trapsmith concept. A wanderer who has an almost obsession with getting into places that other people would rather she not get into.
Going with a couple levels of ranger gives me free dual wielding and some next extra feats and abilities, including the ability to use healing wands.
