I dropped by last night while I was leveling up my demon MM, and I just wanted to personally thank Suichiro for sharing a neat trick of using Screen layer mode filled with black to add lighting.

I like the glow brush in Painter a lot, but one thing that has prevented me from using it much is that if you use the brush on transparent pixels, or if the base color you are using the brush on is not dark enough, the brush will introduce ugly dark colors before it gets glowy.

I just tested glow brush on a black screen layer, and it does exactly what I want it to without undesirable side effects! Better yet, I don't have to worry about permanently altering my base image anymore. I think I will be using this a lot to add incidental lighting.

hmm off to try this now... so I fill a screen layer with black, then I use the glow brush to draw lightning?

Best livestream yet.

Actually, upon further experiment it seems that simply using the glow brush in screen layer mode without filling it with black gives the same result. I guess screen is the perfect blending mode for the glow brush, since it won't make the image darker.

It still seems like a good idea to fill it with black even if there are no visual differences. When it is filled with black, if you change the blending mode to default it is very easy to check where you used glow brush.

Try running filters on your glow layer, abusing the hue and saturation tool, distorting it, etc. It's neat all the things you can do via photoshop, if you know how to run it.

Make a black layer, fill it with large pixels of noise, run a vertical motion blur on it. Set it to screen, instant rain. Then just 'erase' the areas where you don't want the rain with a black paintbrush.

This makes me sad...I don't think my version of Photoshop has a glow brush.

Thanks...how do you fill it with large pixels of noise? Do you just randomly draw dots with brush? I tried noise filter but it didn't look like I could adjust the pixel size.

Scooter, glow brush is a Painter brush. You can get similar results in Photoshop by selecting a soft edged brush and changing the brush mode in the menu bar to Color Dodge or Linear Dodge.

You know, I'm not sure anymore. Photoshop's noise filter changed a lot since I played around with it commonly. What I do as a get-around for stuff like that, is I make a separate file with a low DPI and large size, create the effect like that and then blow it up to the proper size. This never works with anything that requires detail, but with insubstantial things like light, rain and glowy stuff, you can get by in a pinch.

Hey guys,
I'll be doing another Livestream tomorrow night at 10:15pm.

I think I'm going to be working on a Naughty Nadya piece for the book. I've got a decent sketch going but it's in a really early stage so I'll be talking about the transition from sketch to more polished piece.

Damnit! My dishwasher broke and I got sidetracked. One disassembled Rube Goldberg appliance later I learned that it was my garbage disposal installation.

Sorry you missed out Blood Wolffe, too bad though, BW has promised to do free art for the three of us that attended for life. Ah well, that's your luck huh? :P j/k

Don't say things like that! I'm as gullible as a con man in love. I'm also easily distractible, which is why the dishwasher threw my night off so easi - Oooh, shiny!

Now, that is an awesome tip.

For those that use Paint.NET or GIMP, you can do the exact same tricks.

And I'm already thinking of how I can get around rendering energy effects in Poser (which REALLY crank up the CPU and render time needed.) Plus it opens things up to other types of effects than what I have 'defined' as textures and models.

If you're not that great at drawing, most digital illustration programs allow you to define lines, curves, and geometric shapes, that you can then assign glows or other effects to (they're commonly called "Paths".)

Another resource that you can use to generate "brushes" for your digital needs is FractINT. It is a fractal generator program par excellence, and as such does wonderful things with "procedural" objects and effects that you would otherwise have to take time drawing by hand.

you simply pick the fractal model you wish to use, set the colors to what you need, zoom in to where the 'object' is positioned where you want it, then cut/paste the resulting image to your screen layer in PS/Paint.NET/GIMP/Fireworks/etc.

Rotate and scale the screen image as you wish, perhaps mirror it or flip it or whatnot... go nuts. If it's not what you wanted, delete from the screen layer, go back into FractINT and try something else.
