So Forcefield....

How bad is it? Am I likely to die of boredom by level 5?

The reason Im asking is I want to play as the Starship Uber Biscuit and do the whole shields up, pew pew pew thing.

I was thinking of Sonic/ too but then I wouldn't have access to PFF

Bad. Yes. And yes, Sonic's worse 'cause it doesn't even get PFF.

Seriously, if you want to go with FF, you do avoid having to fire off heals all the time, but really your main powers don't give you much to do. You reapply bubbles every few minutes. If you want to use your knockback (and you probably should) you will be more active, but teams will probably complain about it. If you want to avoid both hassles, you will probably want to avoid FF.

If you're fine with it, then FF/Sonic is probably your best choice. The Proton Volley from Rad Blast will give you that "pew pew" feel that you're looking for (it fires four times ) but I've played FF/Rad, and I wouldn't recommend it. You have no way to raise your damage outside of your Secondary, Pool, or Epics, so you're not really going to be able to fill a defense/damage role unless you have a Secondary that REALLY does damage.

And honestly, Sonic isn't that bad an alternate choice. While you can't "turtle up" behind your shields, you do have Sonic Dispersion, which puts a bubble around you, and you have a few more options for offense. I've found Sonic/Rad isn't much better, as you have no options for knockback (early on) but Sonic/Energy could be okay. Although Sonic/Sonic is the obvious choice.

An option I don't really have an experience with, one way or another, is Cold Domination. There's no heal there, though, outside of Frostwork, which is an HP boost. It might be an alternative. You'll get the shields, but a lot more options as well.

You get bored in less than half an hour?!

My experiences

Leveling without Stamina and with Aid Other. Not so much fun.

Respec'ing into Stamina, Fighting, and softcapped (range) def in the 30s: PEW PEW PEW!

Actually, FF is possibly the least boring set because there's less maintenance involved. Healers are constantly healing, FFers bubble once every four minutes, leaving you free to do other things.

Just don't expect to solo much until later level. Between the low damage and the low personal defenses you'll be leveling at a snail's pace (and likely visiting the Hospital regularly unless you're quick on the PFF - which is a godsend).

Sonic is mmore fun to me. With moves like Liquefy and disruption field. Yur not only a buffer but a powerful Debuffer. i like to think of it as a mix between FF and Kin.

FF is only boring solo, as your primary is next to worthless. Sonic though has a few powers that can be classified as "useful" when soloing. PFF is probably what makes people think FF is so boring: They buff their team then turn on PFF and wait 4 minutes, then buff agian.

eh, just give it a shot. your either a FF fan or not. I'm not personally.

Whining about everything since 2006.

Ammo switching for Dual Pistols was my idea:

Fanx for the input.

I made a FF/Rad, currently at the dizzy heights of level 4. So far I've Self Destructed twice, joined an SG from a blind invite and humped Miss Liberty.

So far so good

Well, if you wish to join the ranks of the few, the proud, the bubblers, I suggest the following link:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=123118

Beyond that, do you plan to solo? (Now that you have been warned against it? ) Bubblers actually don't have a lack of powers that help them solo, it's just that such powers are near useless on a team, provided they don't get you kicked. I'm talking about you, Detention Field. Fortunately, with dual builds you can have one build for soloing (no Deflection and Insulation Shield) and one for teaming.

You might consider playing FF under a controller instead. Slightly less buffage, but with the right controller primary, you should solo fine-particularly later game. Bubble pets for teh win.

In my experience Detention Field and Sonic Cage have apparently been given a taunt power vs scrappers. Last time I used sonic cage on a team was on some mob on the far edges of the fight. About ten seconds after I applied the cage(Bright orange spinny sphere.) the scrapper on the other side of the room turns around and sees it. He then proceeds to run all the way across the room past several far more optimal targets to attack the caged mob.

Here boy! Get the shiny ball! <Throws sonic cage and watches scrappers chase it.>

I wont be soloing much, its more of a Post-pub character for messing around on in some Pugs

The first video is boring but impressive.
The second video is fun and exciting.
The third video is not relevant.

After watching the first video it has just occurred to me that irradiate and force bubble aren't going to be a very good combo and then there's Cosmic burst that has exactly faff all range as well.

Maybe I'll make a Sonic/Rad instead or wait for I16 and make a Rad/energy/PFF epic blaster (skipping the melee attacks of course because Starship's don't have arms).

Or maybe I could do both and start my own fleet of Starships, then you'll see, you'll all see!

Then I have no advice to offer other than PhiloticKnight's in that guide I linked to. I will say that Detention Shield can come in handy when an ally is about to die, or the team has misjudged that AV, and all of a sudden the danger is just... gone. 90% of the time, though, you will either not use the power, or be repeating "STOP ATTACKING! WAIT FOR THE SHIELD TO FALL!" all the time.

That can be quite true. I usually find that you need either Repulsion Field or Force Bubble, but not both. When you need Repulsion Field, Force Bubble is no good, and vice versa. The short range attacks in Rad can be a good example of this, Repulsion Field is fine to protect you, and you can use Cosmic Burst and Electron Haze (well, maybe not Irradiate) but Force Bubble cuts off those powers, making them useless when you solo, unless you force a foe against a wall.

On the other hand, if you're not soloing that often, then your attacks may not be that important. You're not the major damage dealer, and if you can't use Electron Haze or Irradiate, that's not that big a deal. On the other hand, Cosmic Burst can be useful to "punch" a foe to stun him for a few seconds while an ally deals with him, so for that reason you might want to turn Force Bubble off and on, or even use it only when needed.

Honestly, the primary use for Force Bubble is to force foes into corners in indoor maps. For that purpose you don't leave it up all the time, and if you leave it up on an outdoor map, not only are you cutting off your close range and cone attacks, you're probably cutting off your ALLIES, as well. While there are situations where it can be useful to force your foes out to sniper range and pick them off from that distance, those are just that, situational.

I find enough use for both Repulsion Field and Force Bubble that I have them both, but I use Repulsion Field far more often. If you feel like you can skip Force Bubble, you probably can. And remember, your starship's Deflector Shield is Dispersion Bubble, not Force Bubble. (Force Bubble is more like putting Tractor Beam in reverse)

Temp powers will help to keep things moving when you're forced to solo. Check your friendly neighborhood Wentworth's for a revolver, baseball bat, or sledgehammer. I'll make the trek to Aim, SOs, and Cosmic Burst more bearable.

You might want to get a head start on your dual build for soloing, actually. Being able to have X-Ray Beam right away at 2, Irradiate right away at 4, and Electron Haze right away at 10 is nice. It leaves you only 3 choices for primaries until at least level 16, but, luckily, PFF, Force Bolt (or Detention Field), and Dispersion Bubble are the only 3 primaries you really need for soloing until then. How convenient.

I suggest FF/NRG ... It's the coolest toon I've ever made. Aim carefully and blast away, it's like playing pool.

If you ain't usin Self Destruct whenever it's up, you ain't playing right.

FF has some great character concept potential, I think. Play it right and you can be something of a tankmage.

Heh... Yeah, by the time he gets his epic armor, he'll have truly Tankerish numbers, with over 71% resistance to smashing and lethal, and over 31% Defense to everything.

Of course, he'll still do abysmal damage...

I have a 45 FF/Rad and a 50 Sonic/Sonic.

I love my Sonic/Sonic. He's god-like on teams; halving incoming damage and doubling outgoing damage. What more could any team want?

I will not rest until we have in-game throwable pies!

Well, Procs are still in your Secondary. There are many Set Bonuses you can slot in your Primary, though, and I suppose a few Procs that you can slot in your knockback powers, and that will certainly get you more damage. The point I was making, though (albeit indirectly) is that you have no way to increase damage in your Primary itself. You MUST go somewhere else, whether it be the Pool, IO's, Epics, Temp Powers, or whatever, as you have no other choice.

Since I forgot to mention this first time around, though, I do very much recommend damage bonus Set IOs if you wish to deal any damage. The OP said he wasn't soloing, so it's not as important, but it will make you do more damage overall, and every little bit helps. The main thing is to find Sets that are cheap and easy to build. I went with Red Fortune, which takes four to get the damage bonus, and Kinetic Crash, which takes only two. I notice a lot of folks talk about Force Feedback, too, but since it's more popular it's more expensive. Since you only need two for the Kinetic Crash, it's easier to slot all your knockback powers with it early on, when you don't have the slots to spare. Plus, you can use the Proc as one of those two, as mentioned above.
