Stupid questions?

Hi, I'm very new to the world of MMORPG, and online gaming in general. So please excuse any stupid questions that are about to appear.

I downloaded the 14-day free trial of City of Heroes, and went through the registration, serial code, verification process. Now when I open the program, the only option is to open the City of Heroes Updater. This wouldn't be so bad, if it wasn't trying to download 3 gigs of information.

My question is: Do I have to wait for this updater to finish before starting the game? If not, how do I start it? It's only downloading at about 15k, so if I have to wait, the first 4 days of the 14-day trial will be spent waiting.

It's the corporations!!

Again, this may be a really dumb question, but I appreciate any assistance or guidance. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like 56K maybe? I can sympathise, I've been there.

It's supposed to me the fastest thing AT&T offers. But if it's not the game, it's my connection, I just might have to give them a call and find out what's going on.

But if experience is any indication, I'm sure they'll say it's doing what it's supposed to.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yep, the game has to patch to the current version in order to play, although it shouldn't be taking that long... either you're on a very slow connection or something on your machine is hogging all the bandwidth.

As an aside I'd rather strongly suggest you change your forum handle by sending an email to CoHForums@ncsoft.com and requesting a change... your current one is likely to get hit by the ban-hammer and even if it doesn't it will create a negative impression of you in everyone's mind.

I appreciate the response, and advice!

I would understand if the moderators decided to require me to change my handle. I've gone by the online name since I was a teenager, and it wouldn't be the first time.

However, if they do not, I won't change it based on how other people view me. I would hope that my behavior, responses and actions would carry more weight with how others view me as opposed to 7 letters next to my posts. I can certainly understand how some people may view it as offensive, but I learned a long time ago that no matter how soft you tip-toe, you will always offend SOMEONE, so why not just do what you feel is ok?

I do appreciate you trying to help me out though. Hopefully I won't have to worry about too many people ganging up on me inside the game because of that name! :-D

Another thing that can slow down the updater download is that it uses the same port next to the p2p sharing software, so many ISPs throttle your speed. (Its why I tell people to download the game then start trial )

My normally fast internet connection goes to a dribble for the updater.

There is a FAQ on the NCsoft trouble shooting site for changing it IIRC.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Yes, but you can decide (as most people do) to avoid doing and saying things that you know are very likely to offend people.

I don't know about "ganging up", but if you use that name in the game, the chances are very high that you will be reported and your character's name genericed.

If you're okay with that, carry on.

OP, have you tried forcing a port? Right-click your shortcut, edit the target field to add " -port #" (minus the quotes, and # should be one found in the article linked - please note that the space and hyphen at the beginning are IMPORTANT, and so is the space between 'port' and the port number you use) at the end.

I just wanted to comment on this since a new player likely doesn't know what this term means. If your character name ingame is reported and a GM agrees, that charater will be "genericed", i.e. their name will be changed to "Generic Hero 0274558" or some combination of numbers. A GM will contact you and allow you to submit a short list of alternative names.

If you use your forum handle ingame, yeah, expect this to happen very quickly.

Just because something is reported doesn't always mean it will be genericed. In this case, it probably will. Your forum handle happens to be an offensive term. It doesn't really bother me, but it IS against forum rules. I see that you already requested a change, so you should be okay. Had a moderator found it prior to your request, the possibility of a more severe punishment would exist. Since they can see that you are being proactive about fixing it yourself they will probably just grant the change and that will be that.

I heard a story about an unfortunate choice of name that got genericed.

The name was "Force Kin". (If you don't get it, say it out loud quickly, blurring the words together) The character was a Kinetics/Energy Blast Defender, so the name was perfectly thematically appropriate. I kinda felt bad for that player because I looked at it and guessed that the name choice was not intended to be offensive. They probably didn't even realize what their name sounded like when you say it out loud.

Names can be generic'd for being offensive, and also for being a copyright infringement- don't go making a Wolverine clone in-game, Marvel already sued over that.

ooo that was really bad for the player. It does sound it was not intentional, just a bad co-incident.

Gratz on the name change, OP.

On another note, your situation is why it's reccomended to buy the latest boxed edition- they have all the updates at the time of release on the disc, so there's much less to download if you want to reinstall.

So I'm sitting there, a few posts back, thinking, "What the heck is offensive about this name???"

And... I guess it's already been changed. Okay. Carry on.

You can still find it in quote boxes from previous posts in the thread.

It's also the name of a rap group from Detroit that is affiliated with ICP. On a guess I'd say that's where he drew the name from.
