ar/dev retrofitting project

This thread has been a real eye-opener. My level 31 AR/Devices alt has been shelved for 2 years. As I recall, I got stuck doing a Redcap mission in Croatoa and got so fed up with all the ambushes and dying that I gave up.

This thread has renewed my interest in the character, though. Based on some of the great advice I've read, here's what I put together:

If you can afford the 2.5 billion for the Gladiator Armor IO, then I would consider something along the lines of my build or Nethergoats and place that IO in those builds. Just swap out one of my powers to pick up Trip mine if you want. Since your replacing one supply of range defense for another you can swap out a power and frankenslot another for some higher dps.

I think Trip mine is a waste for a blaster. Nutshell your going to be hover blasting so your not going to be trying to place trip mines except before a fight starts. After that it will be a forgotten power. If you try to place trip mine during a group fight 1 point of damage will break your placement ( Darkest night which causes no damage will break your placement, you get a constant interrupted message ) and cause you to loose your endurance. You might have 1 more chance to place a trip mine before your endurance drops too low or the fight is over.

Trust me when I tell you, you will start to see that once you place your feet on the ground your gonna be saying I should have stayed up there and attacked instead. I'm not telling you something new. Many smarter players knew this years ago but I didn't get it either. Only when I started to understand defense caps with my Trap toons that it made more sense when I gave it up on my AR Device. Even then it was tough because to me Trip mine was Device. I think that is just the over all mentality with device. Sadly Traps full defense cap capabilities just afford you more chances to place trip mines at will then a hover range cap blaster can.

Yikes, I had no idea the Gladiator 3% was so high! That won't be going into the build!

Thanks for the advice, plainguy. I (sadly) think you're probably right about Trip Mine. I enjoy placing those things before a fight and luring enemies into my trap, but it sure takes a long time to play this way.

I respecced last night (and hit level 32) and purchased one set of Thunderstrike for Burst. It'll be awhile before I can get the rest slotted and ready. I'm relying on my snipe and Slug to take out the first enemy in any group, then Beanbag/Taser and Flamethrower on the others. Now with Full Auto, this should speed things up a bit.

Unlike my other Blasters, this character plays like a ranged Stalker. It's an interesting change of pace. Once I get his defenses up and get more damage on him, I think he'll be able to speed up his "arrest" rate.

EDIT--My love for Trip Mines comes from a fight I had on my Ice/Traps Corruptor years ago. I was soloing a mission with Silver Mantis in it (maybe an Arch-Villain). She was tearing me apart over and over again. I finally figured out that 4 separate sets of 4 Trip Mines each was the key. I laid out my mines and threw caltrops on the first set. Then I aggroed her. The first set of 4 barely made a dent in her, the second set slowed her down some, the 3rd set took a decent amount of hp and staggered her, while the 4th set stunned her and brough her hp down to about 10%. Acid Mortar and my Ice/ powers did the rest. Still my favorite moment in CoH!

I did a build here at work. My goal was to get a decent set without using a ton of money. I'm pretty sure most've these except for Positron are fairly cheap, I have some of the more expensive pieces like Gambler's recharge sitting on alts. This build would be for soloing tip missions, with Ignite thrown in for groups/trials.

I'm not thrilled with the build, mostly because it feels like my last two powers are wasted because I couldn't spare the slots. Could anyone offer their advice for it? I'm not looking for an end-all be-all super character, just something to help bring AR/Dev into the range of playable. I'm planning on going Musculature for my Alpha, Ion for my Judgement, and...unsure for the others.

I edited the build above a little bit. I removed one of the slots from Fly and put it into Hover, to make room for a Luck of the Gambler Recharge Bonus thing. I'll be losing one of my Zephyr bonuses, but I think it's an even trade.

A good friend gave me a Purple Recipe yesterday, so that should pay for the whole build.

Square_Woot

I moved some stuff around, best thing to do is pull them both up side by side and compare. I tried to decrease your rule of 5 break.

End result I reduced your Auto Fire recharge. I swapped out Fly for Super speed. Super speed has a inherit stealth component that combines with cloaking device. Making you more "Stealthier" ( don't even know if that is correct wording ). So you can now speed to end of missions to complete them a bit faster if you need to. Only high perception mobs like Rikti Drones and Snipers will see you. Eat a purple or two inspirations and zip by them. The only thing is you will need to find a safe spot until your cloaking device reactivates. Once your spotted you will remain spotted because each new mob resets your cloaking device timer.

But when not around these type of high perception mobs you could have super speed on and hover with cloaking device and hover around mobs unnoticed. Good for stealth cave missions. You could also buy a jetpack with the same results.

I see you picked up resuscitate, I don't know if its because you have a steady team or you were just picking something. If its the former then okay np. But if its the latter then pick something else. I pug a lot and to me its up to you to handle yourself. I try to make my toons self contained and able to solo higher then normal settings. Just so know I can handle team type setting much easier.

EDIT: I would take one slot out smoke and put it in health. You loose 2% damage but gain more health and regen.

Plain,

Thanks for the build! It's working great for me so far. The only thing I changed was that I removed one of the heals from Aid Self and added it to hover, because I got a drop of one of those Luck of the Gambler recharge dealies.

The build's working great so far. Been soloing 8 spawns, which I thought I could NEVER do on this character before.

I still haven't unlocked my Destiny, and I'm unsure of what to do. I'm leaning towards Clarion for status protection, since we don't get any form of it. Think it's worth it?

If your looking at the long list of set bonuses it is not listing the defense bonus from actual powers. EG your seeing the set bonus from Weave but not the defense number that Weave itself gives.

Here is a thread about Beam Device with a few builds in there to give you some ideas..

Gah, everytime someone necros this thread, I look at every single build, then I get to a message of mine saying that I've looked at every single build but I think there are more builds and carry on looking at builds I've already seen. I need to be banned.

AND I'M BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!1

Ok, I don't remember ANYTHING about where I was with this character, but I logged him in tonight and it looks like I managed to get him to the ranged soft cap? Anyway he's got some ridiculous ranged def (40% ish?) and I had a pretty rough mission (take down Vanessa DeVore, with its endless parade of Master Illusionists).

Cleared it no problem on +1/x3.

Mmmmm, yeah, ranged def is g000000d.

I somehow didn't end up with ignite, and I missed it. Caltrops + Ignite is so much fun...but, pretty much nothing hit me, so...

Welcome back !

I actually seen you post some place else and read your blog. Kids keep you busy for sure.

But as for this thread, so you know I point people to this thread anytime they ask about device.

I ended up going your route with the Gladiator +3 defense IO as the prices went down and I could afford to spend the 350 million for it.

With the advent of the ATO I changed up my build a bit more but it did get a bit screwy. Even with the changes that brought an increase in endurance I still seemed to have to go with Cardiac instead of Musculature. But for sure I will pull out my build and post it up with the incarnates included.

Again WB

thanks for keeping it on the radar- I was expecting the forum monster to have snacked on it, but there it was!

Laughing at myself for dropping 2b+ on that Glad defense, going on hiatus for a year and returning to find it in the 300m range.

Heehee!

But the soft cap is worth whatever you have to pay for it as a blaster- Big Payback is a badass again!

one performance comment:

Gun Drone *still* charges into melee with whoever is at hand.
And the prolonged activation combined with the minuscule duration is still so annoying I stopped bothering with it about halfway through the mish.

Maybe I should pick up a Liger to take its place.

I have roughly 46% ranged defense, I skipped out on the Gun Drone as I see it as rather useless, long as I stay close to the ground to lay mines as I might need them, but.. meh, i'm fixing ready to strip this blaster for another character.

@Ishaila

Nice build, just be aware that your 1 point off defense cap because of stealth suppression. But that can be fixed by swapping in a Gladiator +3 Defense IO now that they are cheap or even cheaper swap out fury for eradication in Trip mine.

But beyond all of that still a good build. I like that you didn't use taser or Beanbag. Though they might be nice I notice even 6 slotted in both I need both powers to hold a mob as one power does not work.

I removed Afterburner because I honestly don't see the bonus it was offering. When activated it of course increased your Range defense cap, but it will as still shy of incarnate trial defense numbers. But even then when activated you can't do anything really so its not even as good as PFF for protection.

From removing Afterburner I placed in Gun Drone. Gun Drone is on a 60 second recharge so you can have up 2 of them for 30 seconds.

Devices offer some nice Defiance buffs Trip Mine 26% Time Bomb 52% for 15 seconds. I always take them both and slot 6 Obliteration which grant some nice buffs.

Boosting Regen and Damage work well for Dev blasters who usually prolong battles with Caltrops, stuns, etc. Also AR is the cone attack monster so Range extenders pay off well. I have a level 50 AR/NRG with Boost Range and Centriole in most attacks. Ever see what Full Auto can do at 175 foot range?

I do have an AR/Dev at 40 though. Because of Targeting Drone he gets the most out of the Temp Powers which become very accurate. Stun Grenades, Frag Grenades, Hold Grenades, Gabriel's Hammer for those melee moments.

Hint: Always drop a Trip Mine at your feet for the Defiance Buff, a mob might step on it too. It's not Build-Up or 6-slotting damage SO's like before ED, but it does help.

I will go to my grave declaring Time Bomb a garbage power & waste of slots.
Unless they've MASSIVELY buffed it since the last time I respec'ed out of it in disgust, anyway.

And my feelings about tripmine have (hopefully) been stated earlier in the thread- it imposes an entire playstyle I don't enjoy.

Defiance buffs are all well and good, but can't in and of themselves make me take a power.

I love working some +range into my cones when possible- cone AoE is the main strength of AR & boosting its range is helpful, although the hit cap does somewhat limit its practical application.

Temp powers can be handy at lower levels, but once I've got a full attack chain they become superfluous.

New build for the upcoming changes to Sniper. Personally I will not take any Sniper attack on any of my toons unless it fits into the build without going nuts trying to accomplish it. Further I personally feel unless it is perma it is not worth having, so basically this new ability has to be available anytime Sniper is up. So if I have to jump through hoops to get it then it is not worth it.

As I see it if anything the ToHit requirement will probably be decreased if anything. Nutshell they are not going to make it harder to achieve then it currently is atm. Many players already see this change as a gimmick to make Device more useful but not really having any big changes for Device.

If you look back at my last build you will see that I had Taser and Beanbag. The simple story with these 2 powers is I needed BOTH to initiate the stun on a boss mob and then could use Beanbag to keep the stun going. The sad part is I never feared a boss that much that I needed to keep it stunned or perma stunned. I found it easier to just kill it outright instead of wasting my time firing beanbag every it was up.

The other issue was if I failed to fire beanbag when it was up and I delayed it would break the stun and I needed to reapply both attacks to get the npc stunned again. Another issue with this is I needed to get out of range and get into melee to use Taser which destroyed my whole range defense cap advantage.

Finally because respecing is such a pain in the backside I dread respecing just to change one power when the over all numbers aren't really changing.

The new build

With these changes I picked up Sniper and M30. I was able to now 5 slot Sniper, M30 and Ignite. Nutshell all my attack powers are all 5 or 6 slotted which is nothing to complain about. Further Every set bonus slotted is offering something to the build. So I am not slotting 2 IOs to get terror resistance for example because the rule of 5 is being broken.

The trick

What I needed to do is get 22% ToHit bonus without the kismet IO. What I did was use Slot Enhancers and added 5 to the ToHit IO from Gaussian Synchronized fire control which brought my ToHit to exactly 22%. I then added 2 to ToHit/Recharge IO to get it up to 22.02%. I did it because I have 127 Slot Enhancers.

I then noticed I was short in Range defense cap with Cloaking Device suppressed. I added another 5 slot enhancers to LOTG Defense/Endurance IO which brought my Range defense cap up the few 10ths of a point I was short. End result is I tested it out in game and my Range Defense cap is at 45.80 when suppressed. What this taught me was that the game rounds UP the numbers for us in our favor. So you can slightly weasel and I actually did not need the 5 slot enhancers in my defense.

Alpha Incarnate

Alpha incarnate wise I started looking around and the end result is you will need Cardiac. When you start comparing Agility VS Musculature you will see that the DPS from Musculature will out weigh the recharge you get from Agility because of the recharge you already have going on in the build.

So the next issue your going to look at is Endurance ratio. Endurance Ratio for those just learning is the amount of endurance you recover vs the number of endurance your using. The rule of thumb is you should have 2 points of endurance after it is all said and done. So what I simply do is for example in this build is I add 2 points onto the enduse total which is 1.27, which would make it 3.27 ( 2+1.27 = 3.27 *DUH* ). I then compare this 3.27 to the EndRec total which is 3.02.

I know we are talking 10ths of a point but having done this enough I can tell you it does matter.. It really, really, really does. The only way you can do this is if you have some sort of endurance recovery power like Dark consumption or Power Sink from either Mu Mastery or Electric Mastery. I do this on my Robot Traps, Traps AR defender, DP traps corruptor, Sonic Traps Corruptor and it works.

So end result with the Alpha incarnate I had not choice but go with Cardiac. The great thing about Cardiac is I have NO issue of endurance.

If you look I am 7 seconds off Perma Hasten.

What I did is use a few more Slot Enhancers on Gun Drone with any IO that had recharge in it. I can have up 2 Gun drones for 38 seconds. Again 2 Gun drones nothing to complain about. Yes 1 is okay but having 2 out is fun. Last night on a BAF I got speed boost and was able to have 3 out.

I was running DA on 3/8 last night fighting those bird type Artemis of Veng and I should have taken a screen shot because at one point I had 2 Guns out and both were near me firing in 2 directions.. It was a cool moment.

Here is the build. I left in Musculature so you can see the endurance issues I was talking about.

EDIT: I forgot about the possible cloaking Device changes. Depending on what endurance bonus cloak device might offer that might make Musculature possible.

If so WOW.

fascinating stuff as always, Plain.

As a fan of Snipe, I can't wait to plug it back into my build however the changes end up working out- and of course as a /dev making it perma is no biggie.

On the topic of the character that inspired me to post this thread, I've been playing him a bit to get back my feel for his offense so I'll be able to gauge the difference the change makes. With is current range capped defense build he can cruise through pretty much any mish at 0/+6. He can go higher (often way higher) if I cherry pick opponents.

One change to my earlier opinions is that the 'instant cast' change to Gun Drone has made it a good power. AI & damage are still crummy, duration is still too short, but the ability to just poop one out whenever you want makes it very useful at distracting aggro. In my case, if stuff gets through my caltrops and wants to beat on me in melee, I pop out a gun drone and that usually distracts them long enough for me to stun 'em or reapply trops.
