GFX card upgrade killing my framerate

Heyall

I recently upgraded from a GeForce 9800 GTX to a GTX 260, however the switch has completely killed my framerate.

Even at the lowest settings the game is virtually unplayable.

So i ask you if there are any known issues with these cards and their latest drivers?

Posted

I have a 260 and it slices thru CoX. Not sure why you are having issues. More than likely you have a dirty driver install. Run a driver cleaner in safe mode then reinstall Nvidia drivers.

Not all gtx 260s are great. Who manufactured your gtx 260 and your 9800 gtx? I usually stick with evga or xfx myself.

Did you crank up your resolution when you changed video cards? The bottleneck might have moved to your CPU once you upgraded the video card.

Also, have you installed the newest NVidia drivers? If you were using old drivers on the previous card, maybe those older drivers don't support the new card.

Well, there is really no rhyme for why it craps out at even the lowest possible settings.
Everything else runs perfectly so i'm not sure why CoH is the app that suffers from this.

My Drivers are up to date, Everything is pretty much on par as far as bottlenecking goes.

The manufacturer is ASUS, not that i've had any problems with their cards in the past.

Maybey a fresh CoH install might do the trick :/

When you say "everything else runs perfectly", are you referring to other games?

Are those games DirectX or OpenGL?

If they are OpenGL, like CoH, what version of OpenGL were the games written for?

Do those games use the Cryptic Engine that CoH uses?

If they are DirectX, you are comparing Apples to Oranges. DirectX and OpenGL use very different calls to do things, and hardware manufacturers don't always write their drivers to handle OpenGL correctly, or at least not as smoothly as they do DirectX.

If they are using a different version of OpenGL, you are comparing Oranges to Tangerines. Newer versions of OpenGL handle things that older versions can't, or in ways that they couldn't. When City of Heroes was written the only version of OpenGL was OpenGL 1. Some elements of OpenGL 2 may have been included with CoV, but the game engine wasn't really designed to handle them.

If they are using the Cryptic Engine that CoH uses, that game is called either CoH or CoV. Nothing else uses that engine.

Without information that would be provided by a CoH Helper report and a HijackThis log, it's really difficult to tell what the cause of the problems may be.

For instance, different Operating Systems may have different problems with the same video card driver version. Without full information, we are all just playing a game of Blind Man's Bluff.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

It looks like Dell XPS 420 power supply is either 375 W or 425 W. It might be a bit small for GTX 260.

Posted

The GTX 260's minimum specs call for a 500 watt power supply with 36 amps on the +12V rails. I doubt the stock Dell power supply is up to snuff, but I don't have the specs handy so I can't prove it.

Posted

I guess i could get away with a 650 Watt supply then, it still boggles me that the character menu of CoH has a worse framerate than any game i have played this year.

Posted

is that a generic power sup or a name brand 1? if its a cheapo 1 dont think just cos it says 650 watt it can handle what you have.

Perhaps. But it would be really a 'how much power is being asked' question.

The amount of 'thinking' is what the power requirements are... a game can look graphically intensive, but the reality is it is simple in geometry, simple in pattern repitition, and also can be made to be relatively small in area so the GPU doesn't have to think so much. By the same token, the same can be said for how much CPU power is required to run things.

There are so many examples of "(insert game of choice here) plays fine, but Co* doesn't" that have been seen...

To give you a better example... I use Co* to kill a computer if I suspect it's not good. Or I want to try to kill it to be sure it won't die. I used to do Flight Simulator (which is more CPU than GPU intensive... or at least, used to be up to 2004) to try to do that, but nothing... NOTHING... seems to come close to the awesome Hulkish (oops, copyright) power of Co* to make a computer spaz out.

So yeah. Power supply.

And for me, I have found Thermaltake and Cooler Master PSUs to be quite nice. If anyone cares about my opinions, that is...

I was looking at a Chieftec CFT-650-14CS, from what i can recall they used be okay.
Might be wrong though

On the GFX cards box it calls for a 550W with 12V current rating of 40A

Leaning towards PSU as well. I used to have a BFG 9800 GTX and upgraded to a BFG GTX 280, and didn't have any of the issues you describe. Mind you, I've been using an OCZ 700w PSU the whole time.

It could also be a driver issue. You say your drivers were up to date, but did you:

1. Uninstall video drivers.
2. Turn off your PC; remove 9800GTX
3. Put GTX 260 in machine; reboot
4. Install latest drivers from nVidia's website.

You could also run a driver cleaner program between steps 1 and 2, to be fully sure the old drivers are gone. I know that they are both nVidia cards, but it is always best to remove drivers before changing hardware.

No i didn't remove the original drivers inthe particular order, the original 9800 broke down so i had to exchange it with an older card.
However i did clean the drivers before i put in the new one.

as for PSU's, do not get a generic one, or some off brand. stick with the trusted industry names as the psu labeling can be very misleading. i have seen 600w psu's that cant even put out a steady 300w

I highly recommend you take a few mins and read through this thread, you will not regret it.

I checked up on the one i bought and it's definatley capable of powering what i have now.
I also cleaned up my drivers again.

All this has helped with is the pre-char selection screen lag...
So as soon as i get to char selection or in-game it goes down to 2 - 3fps.

Any other suggestions?
