Computer Shuts Off While Playing CoH

I have recently resubscribed after four months of not playing.

Every time I try to play, though, my computer shuts off completely. This occurs after about seven minutes. This problem does not occur with any other application I use.

I am a 3D animator, so my system is very powerful.

Am I the only one with this problem or is it an update issue?

Thank you.

I can't say I have heard of it, but I am not an expert. The real people to talk to are the ones in the Tech Support Forum. They will probably have you post some specifics about your system, which you can find out about in this post

I'm with StarGeek. That was my first thought as it happened to me too.

Systems tend to shut off suddenly when they get too hot as well. It's possible you have a dead fan someplace or a build up of dust that does not put the same stress rendering images that the real time rendering of COH puts on it.

Before you go off and get a new power supply, I would open up the case and have a look. It's it's dusty in there, Time to get a can of Dust Off.

To see if it's a dead fan, I would look at the Graphics Card and CPU first. Make sure you power up the PC when you are looking.

Hope that helps and that you are up and running again soon.

Your power supply might also be underpowered for your equipment. When I bought my computer, in spite of having a decent high-end graphics card and four hard drives installed, it came with a cheap-o power supply, I think it was 350 or 400W. As soon as I started doing anything remotely taxing to the sytsem, *zzzt!*

I upgraded to a 1000W power supply, and I didn't have any problems with my system dying like that after.

Same here, I would go to Fry's Electronics and install a new power supply. If the problem persists remove it and return it for a full refund.

I once had this problem too. I think it was my power supply as well. Though I also think my video card fan was busted since I swapped that out and it started working again.

** Power supply

** Overheating (very likely if you're in a warm area in summer)

** Firewall issues, but that's mainly shutting the program down, not shutting off.

Myself, it's always been overheating issues that have actually turned the whole computer off. Make sure your rig is clean and dust free, open it up and use it without a case for a while and see if that helps, or put another fan on it (not on the same power supply, something off another strip).

Make sure your heat sink is properly pasted up, thermal paste goes between it and the chip, when my computer was dying an untimely death it was because there was *none* between - the heat sink wasn't doing diddly. (that, and it was clogged entirely with cat fur.)

Thank you all for the feedback. I will systematically go over every fan. My power supply is more than powerful, but may be going out. Blast!

Anyway, I really appreciate the replies. I am dying to play again!

And since nobody else said it yet, welcome back to the game!

I've had that happen to me for two reasons...

It drained the battery life before I could get the charger plugged back in.
I fixed that by always keeping my charger plugged in while playing.

My computer got too hot and shut down to prevent damage.
I fixed that by getting a cooling mat for my laptop.

Cooling or power supply.

Download Speedfan and monitor your temp while playing.

I had a similar problem with my computer. I didn't know if it was a power problem or an overheating problem. Unfortunately I have a Dell with a proprietary power supply so I couldn't replace it.

So I made two changes to my setup...I plugged my computer into a better UPS that could handle the power draw of my computer and also deal with any voltage spikes/drops. My previous UPS wasn't powerful enough for my computer. Then I found a small USB cooling fan that I could lay over the top vent of my case so I can actively draw out more heat. I never figured out what was the source of the problem, I haven't had a shut down since I made those changes.

Typically if you have power issues, you get a variety of unexplained errors. If you have a problem with excessive heat, your pc will shutdown immediately upon hitting a threshold as an effort to save the pc.

Reminds me of when the computer would overheat about the same time my car would overheat in Need For Speed Underground 2.

I liked the irony.
